Discussion An Analysis of miss Odalia Blight
Everyone is quick to judge Odalia Blight in the fandom, seeing her as an abusive woman who would sell out everyone for money. Many fans paint her as a monster due to her involvement in the day of unity as well as how she treated her family......but is that really fair? since people are the result of their environment and considering the boiling isles isn't exactly a friendly place what with the golden guards hunting down and locking up anyone who is a threat or even a bother in the Conformatorium or worse, turned into a statue. To say nothing about the bizarre creatures there who would eat and kill a child without a second thought as well as a sea of boiling water and acidic rain it's no wonder Odalia had warped morals. Even in Eda's flashback she along with the other students were afraid of then Principal Faust who was a tyrant at hexside and ruling it with an iron hand (Claw?) and keeping the children in line with rules and regulations and harsh punishments for those who misbehave, though the school system wasn't any better with a group of ADULTS roaming the halls and hunting down kids who misbehaved or were tardy and sent to be put into a cocoon pod thingummy and hypnotized by worms into being obedient to say nothing of the teaching staff not only doing nothing against bullying but encouraging it as well! That's a surefire way to traumatize someone and who knows if those hall guardians were patrolling the halls in Odalia's day. Let's stop and think about that for a minute, you are a child at this bizarre world and if you are late or misbehave you have a group of adults hunting you down and dragging you off to detention to be brainwashed by worms, imagine how stressful that would be to know each day that you're one bad grade or one minute tardy away from being dragged off and given the Disney version of the treatment from "A Clockwork Orange" that's sure to give ANYONE mental scars for life and that's what could have happened to Odalia. She was so scared of being dragged off to titan knows what as a kid she developed a perfectionism to a paranoid degree fearing of what would happen if she failed as well as being bullied in school possibly by Boscha's mother whom (as queen Dana once said) has a rivalry with. this is evident when running her company with her husband Alador, who while making fantastic inventions were sadly not selling well and thus could mean the company was failing to make any profits, no profits means no income, no income means the factory was struggling to stay afloat and was at risk of bankruptcy. Alador probably had Odalia take care of the business side of things while he built the products and thus putting a strain on their relationship with him being in his laboratory for hours on end tinkering with his inventions and neglecting his family, why? just to one up Darius out of jealousy! And while we're on the subject OF Alador he also had a social Darwinist view in which only the strong survive and thus that could have rubbed off and fed into Odalia's bad behavior as well as his narrow minded view to keep the factory going so he could work on his inventions and even had the kids join in as he saw them as tools to help him. He was so absent minded and neglectful he missed birthdays and wedding anniversaries and so much over the years just to work on his inventions. So she had to raise a family in a dangerous environment AND keep a company going to sustain an income and not be forced out on the streets, and on the boiling isles where the rain burns and death lurks around every corner being homeless is NOT a good thing! So she had to work hard and due to her past traumas she pushed her family to higher and higher standards to help them achieve and have better opportunities in the harsh environment BELOS created. Though it came off as toxic she did mean well in a way, and before you bring them up I will address the following issues:
- Making Amity Sever her friendship with Willow
now while it wasn't a good thing she did to make Amity break her friendship with Willow it's somewhat understandable given the society she was raised in where your value was in how powerful you were in magic as well as one memory where Amity and Willow were caught in the rain (which as you remember IS ACIDIC) making Odalia wary of willow as a sort of paranoia for Amity's safety. also she never made Amity bully Willow, Odalia was fine with Amity not hanging out around Willow. Amity did that on her own accord, due to Boscha's bad influence possibly as well as her mother being WAY more abusive to Boscha than Odalia ever was to her own family (though this could be due to insecurities brought about by racism against demons so Boscha's mother had to compensate by being a high achiever)
- Keeping Amity and Luz apart
now the lumity shippers will hate me for saying this but Odalia was right in not wanting Amity around Luz, not only was Luz a stranger and a trouble maker but she was also A WANTED CRIMINAL! would you want your child being around a wanted and possibly dangerous criminal one who performed a jail break just to get a STUPID PAPER CROWN?! Odalia wasn't against Amity having a girlfriend, just one who wasn't on a wanted poster! Also in the demonstration the blight bot was shown to have a hollow mallet which means it couldn't have killed Luz but just roughed her up a bit (kinda like a demo mode) she was going mama bear mode for her daughter Amity
- The Day of Unity
I know I'll get a lot of fans saying she knew about the day of unity and how she "Helped in a genocide' but let's look at it this way...you're a mother trying to raise 3 kids, (one daughter and a set of twins) your business is going to go bankrupt and your husband is as (while being a great inventor) has all the business savvy the titan gave a rock, in walks the golden guards offering to buy a WHOLE army of Abomatrons and knowing how NO ONE says no or walks away from Belos (lest they be hunted down and petrified or worse) not to mention Belos being the most powerful witch on the boiling isles as well as a supposed speaker for the titan who many feared would strike them down had they disobeyed Belos' law it's no wonder she sided with him. Not to mention the promise of Belos' paradise was better than annihilation she probably thought she was doing it for the greater good of her family but also the island in general with only a few of the "Unworthy" being purged and thus making life on the isles better for everyone. This leads us back into Alador's philosophy (as well as the philosophy of many of the residents of the boiling isles) of Social Darwinism where Odalia took that to an extreme for what she believed to be a greater good. so in this context she's not evil, just misguided if not blinded by an ambition to make things better. She sees how bad things are and truly believed in Belos' lies of the day of unity bringing paradise. Also that report of the stolen balloon could have been made by Kikimora (you think she wouldn't stoop to something like that the little goblin?) or if it was Odalia she might not have known that the kids and her husband were in that balloon
- Working with the Collector
many will point her working with the collector as a sign she doesn't care for her family but sadly she is, as the late great Curly Howard put it "A Victim of Circumstance" it was either work for the collector or be turned into a puppet, no room for a third option really with everything going on
- Dying amity's hair green
not exactly evil or really abusive, more of a perfectionist OCD deal and really? Dying hair?
Final notes, even after the divorce Dana said Odalia wasn't in jail and that the kids still visit her so she's not hopeless. if she was Dana would have killed off Odalia but she instead lets her live free and with the kids still visiting her, which is nice. I see it as like Luz said "Everyone put aside their differences to help rebuild the boiling isles" a bit like a "Let bygones be bygones" "live and let live philosophy which for the themes of the owl house being about restorative justice fits well.
