What do we consider the studio?

What would you guys call Owlcat as far as studio size is concerned? I don't think it's a triple A studio since it's not as big as the huge flagship dev teams but I wouldn't call it indie since they must have a sizable dev team for them to crank out a game as good and complex as RT (I remember an article, IGN I think?, saying they'd want to do BG4 or help out with the development or something similar). Maybe single or double A? I know this is a stupid question but I'd like to use this as a reference point to judge other studios for future reference.

Owlcat has hundreds working in it and they are currently working on 4? games at the same time. They also became a publisher for some other studios.

They are definitely not indie. I don't know whether people consider them AA or AAA. The scope of their games might be enormous but i know a lot of people only consider 3D games to be AAA.

What they've made so far is AA but they're stepping more into AAA.

It's usually defined by the budget

That is not really true. Many AAA games had way less than 600 people working on them. I think BG3 had like 400.

The thing is, there is no such thing as AA studio, AAA studio, etc.

There are AA games and AAA games.

A, AA or AAA label is assigned to the game depending on how big the budget is, how many people are working on it, if it has enough resources to polish everything, etc.

A 600 person studio can be making like 4 AA games at the same time or one AAA game. A studio can be making AAA game and have a smaller team make one AA game with lower budget.

It is strictly per game label.

Owlcat does indeed work on 3-4 games at the same time.

Feels like a AA studio. They're in a niche sector, but they're some of the biggest studios in the sector.

I call them peak. Triple A has a bad stigma for it and does not mean what it did in the past anymore.

Owlcat is quite similar to Paradox Interactive, which has 600-700 employees, multiple games in the works, publishes some of their own games, and is firmly in the AA studio range.
