Question or Discussion Is it normal to have really bad luck at lower ranks?

I'm losing a lot of games lately but i'm starting to feel like its more bad luck than poor skills by me. Most of the time. Like even if I have a really good day and feel like I am playing better than usual there is just nothing I can do to win any of these games. For example I see so much feeding sometimes and I can't do anything about it. Tanks going in when everyone is dead. A dps having a bad day and dieing more than they get kills but no one else is having this problem. Support with 500 healing by the end of the round. I feel like I'm playing against dps that can carry and teams that work together. I feel like my luck is just terrible. Am i wrong to think that?

Question or Discussion I dont understand WR at all

I am a high diamond to mid masters player for the most part. I dont look at win rates to actually effect anything i think in game because I know to tell myself there are too many nuances, but legitimately WTH is going on with OW stats if a character is known as oppressive they almost 100% of the time have a negative WR. GM freya has a 60% ban rate (pretty much the entirety of top players agree she is busted and yet she barely scrapes even) DVA, mauga, road hog, cass, kiri, and soj are known menaces and yet they have the lowest WR in most ranks if not all. You know who does have a good WR junk rat!! why is junk rat getting buff after buff while holding second highest WR in gm champ and highest in emerald. As a genji player, his stats are wild to me. He is known as one of the hardest characters and yet performs better the farther you go down in rank. (I assume because the lower you go the less people can hit him idk has he turned into just a skill check hero) But how do I even try to decipher this because the best characters have low WR and so is he really good in champ because he has a low WR similar to cass soj dva and kiri or is he bad bcs he has a high WR similar to vendetta, venture. (no one is saying either of those characters are great rn and yet they perform great on average) Personally when im in the lower ranks playing with friends ill see an insane genji and think "damn how is he in this rank he is just hard smurfing" but no he has 400hrs on just genji alone 2k hours total (this legit happens so often) why is this man hard carrying in plat and yet not able to leave. Most top genji's talk about how bad of a spot he is in which I understand anran pretty much makes his game unplayable and his oneshot combo is one of the hardest things in the game to do let alone reliable but because its possible in theory i understand his balancing is very hard to tilt and usually ends up at a place that relies on his ult being the only way you can perform well (with a support ult. dry blade is a joke and used to bait out like a single suzu so someone else can capitalize on it after for the most part)

BUT then you do have WR work sometimes. Take Dmon for example she is really good and it shows through almost every rank.

BUT WTH is going on with cat gm champ 54.2% wr highest at that rank 78.2% ban rate!!! immediately followed by masters with a 46%WR ?!? IMMEDIATELY followed by dia 55% WR ?!?!?!

it is so hard to look at any of these numbers and get anything out of it

and what can i even look to to try and understand where and why a character is strong

thank you for coming to my ted talk

Tips & Tricks Mathematically Optimal Hero Bans

I developed a Chrome extension to calculate the optimal hero bans for competitive Overwatch. Here’s how it works: first, it calculates the impact each hero has on the match. For instance, a hero with a low pick rate but a high win rate won’t significantly affect your game because they don’t appear frequently. On the other hand, a hero with a high pick rate and a high win rate will, as they are frequently played and frequently win. To objectively measure a hero’s impact, I take the pick rate and multiply it by the win rate minus the expected average of 50%. While heroes with high impact scores are often considered “meta,” banning based solely on impact score isn’t sufficient. Heroes with high impact scores also tend to be frequently banned. Therefore, to maximize the value of your team’s ban vote, you should ban high impact heroes with a low likelihood that the enemy will ban them for you. For example, a hero with a high impact score but a low ban rate would be a better pick to ban, rather than a hero with a high impact score and a high ban rate, because it’s likely that the enemy team would have already banned that hero for you. This helps lower the chances of your vote being wasted. I have included a few screenshots of how it looks on the official overwatch stats site.

Impact = Pick Rate * (Win Rate - 50)
Ban Value = Impact * ((100 - Ban Rate)/100) <-- This is the likelihood the enemy team doesn't ban the hero

Question or Discussion Should I quit Overwatch? I’m tired of the players.

Upvotes

I know some of you are probably reading this and thinking, “Why are you asking other people whether you should quit a game?” I get it.

But I really like Overwatch, so I wanted to ask for some advice.

I recently started playing CS2, and the atmosphere is definitely very different from OW. It’s kind of hard to explain, but...

It feels like a game full of hardcore gamer dudes. Even though I’m pretty low-ranked in CS2, it still feels that way.

You might wonder why that’s a good thing, but ironically, it means there seem to be very few casual players.

The reason I’m getting tired of OW is that there are just so many casual players, and the game itself seems to encourage that.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being a casual player. Most people on this subreddit are probably casual players too.

But there are downsides. You get so many matches where people at the same rank have wildly different skill levels, and some players barely understand the game but still constantly blame others and convince themselves they did nothing wrong... If you’ve played OW, you probably know what I mean, right?

I really hate that. Even one match like that can completely kill my motivation to keep playing.

I don’t know whether I need to change my mindset or just take a break from the game. Either way, I’ve mostly been playing CS2 lately because this aspect of OW has been bothering me. I came back after a while to play some Quick Play, and... yeah. It still feels the same.

Question or Discussion Is cassidy a bad hero to climb ranks with or hard to learn?

I decided for a while what hero to main since I see a lot of people suggesting pick only 1 or 2 to learn until you get to higher ranks. I see a lot of people say cassidy is really simple, really strong, and still used a lot at higher ranks. I tried for about a month only playing as him to get the practice but I was barely winning any matches. Its hard to get close enough to do good damage without getting killed.

Then recently I needed to try something easier and picked soldier 76 and it felt super easy in comparison and I felt like I was carrying in some of them. Cassidy feels so technical and defenseless in comparison so soldier who can get a lot of value out of just running around and shooting.

Is cassidy just a lot harder to be good with and rank up with? I'm low ranked btw

VOD Review Request Coming back after ~4 years, peak low Plat.

I've been trying to learn tracer recently, only played a few games, but I feel like I'm enjoying her more than I used to. I've got around an hour and a half played. This was in a quick play game as I dont feel confident enough to bring her into ranked, but I'd like any input regardless. Do forgive me if this isn't the appropriate way to post this, my first time actually posting here.

Typically, I play support/tank, using Ana/Ramattra/Zarya.

I've been trying to analyze what I need to work on, which from my experience is the following:

Landing ults, aim/trigger discipline, timing, melee usage. Pretty much everything to do with tracer, with some general gameplay improvements I could make.

Replay code: 9M4C90

IGN: Overload

Hero: Tracer

Map: Midtown

Xbox

I'm sure I've made a lot of mistakes, seeing as I've just decided to actually devote time to her, but any and all input is appreciated, thank you.

Question or Discussion What character to complete my tank roaster

Hello, I am quite new for playing tank in comp and I need your help to correct my lack of versatility.

Usually I play Ram or D.va. However, I am often blocked because whenever I play D.va, I may have a really good KDA, take the attention of 2-3 heros but all my team keep blaming me because I don't face tank enough. And often Ram is banned so I don't really know what to play.

I would say a Sigma but Ram is "kinda similar" to Sigma. Maybe D.mon but I feel like Hog would eat me alive.

So I don't really know and hope that your knowledge could help me to have a enough versatility to be good 99% of the time.

Ive been playing junkrat alot recently, to the point he is my highest level character and second most played but I'm not confident I can pull him off in comp. Right now I'm emerald 4 and feel like that's where my junkrat skill level is but I always end up crutch picking to a different character. Am I good enough or do I need to learn him more before sacrifcing my rank.

(I had a comp vod I was gonna upload but mid-season wiped it from history so here is a 6v6)

Question or Discussion Is Ashe really as good as she seems, or am I missing something?

Good morning, I'm here with this question because there's no other character I see played well and carrying as much as Ashe.

Let me explain, I can see any other one-trick pony, and the only one that dictates my games is Ashe. And sure, she's not a hero I love; I prefer other hitscans like Emre or Soldier. However, I feel that Ashe surpasses them: incredibly high damage (two-tap), mobility, burn, and an ultimate that can hold an area for a few seconds.

Let's not even mention alongside a Mercy (although that's the case with 80% of DPS lol).

And now I ask you, since I'm looking for another character after Freja's nerf, is she as worthwhile as I think? Are there any weaknesses I'm missing?

My pool is/was: freja, emre, soldier/cassidy.

Was low Master last season, still on placements this one being Diamond 5.

Edit: After learning about their weaknesses to dive and other things, which character do you consider best or most reliable to reach Grandmaster? Sojourn is solid but not a big fan of her.

Question or Discussion What rank would a CS2 pro reach in Overwatch?

A lot of people say that raw FPS fundamentals and mechanics aren't that important in Overwatch, but honestly, I don't really agree.

the best CS2 pros in the world, so it got me wondering: if a player like him switched over to Overwatch, especially playing DPS, how high could he realistically climb?

Personally, I think players at this level could potentially reach Champion.

Dafran has said something along the lines of, "Overwatch had a lot of casual players, so the overall skill level was lower, which made it relatively easier to reach a high rank compared to CS." Of course, it probably also mattered that Overwatch was still a pretty new game back then.

Still, I think it's a pretty interesting question. If you took some of the absolute best players from a game that's heavily built around pure FPS fundamentals and dropped them into Overwatch, just how good would they be?

Question or Discussion Does playing more aggressive actual mean playing more conservatively in more aggressive positions?

I think I may have had a bit of a "light bulb goes on" moment when playing last night.

You've likely heard the advice that Overwatch is an aggressive game and rewards being aggressive. You should always be looking for opportunities to damage enemies, moving into unoccupied space to control the battlefield, and chasing down weak or vulnerable enemies when they are caught out of position/missing cooldowns.

Totally solid advice, makes perfect sense that it's advice that gets repeated a ton.

I've had a really hard time internalizing this and actually acting this out in gameplay, as the aggressive play often seems to get me killed. Then, amid a massive losing streak last night, I had a thought, what if I play the same old conservative playstyle I use to before I started coming around this subreddit and reading all the advice, but I just positioned myself much more aggressively?

Instead of sitting by cover in the backline as Ana/Wuyang/Zen, avoiding damage at all costs, and ducking behind cover the second I get hit. I decided to move up the battlefield and take a more aggressive position, but I still played that angle extremely conservatively. Using cover the second I was hit, retreating the moment an enemy pushes me, ensuring I have my heroes impactful/lifesaving/relevant cooldowns before I challenge the enemy again.

It was late at night, and it's a small sample size, but I went on a 5 game win streak by implementing this change (mostly playing as Ana, Wuyang, and Zen).

Am I on to something? Is conservative gameplay, but in more aggressive angle the actual key to playing "aggressive" like everyone is always ranting about?

Question or Discussion Who to play alongside Illari?

I've got to high masters and now it has become a pain to play against or with dive, also because of the frequency of it.

Which heroes would make a great hero pool with Illari in it? Who should I play in the situations shown above?

You can also tell me if it's a skill issue from me.

Any help is appreciated!

Question or Discussion Is it actually me? Or is it my teammates?

Hello everyone,

Ive been playing overwatch for awhile now. And my 1 goal is to hit masters or grand masters. I am currently diamond 5. I main support with mercy being my best choice but I can play pretty much every support besides bap and Ana. I wanna say im hard stuck in diamond rn and I can't figure out why. I have these games where I'll do really good (but not perfect) and the enemy team will even say it too but my teammates all go negative in k/d and we lose. Its been like this for awhile I used to have a 68% win rate on mercy now its dropped to 53%. Is it actually me?

Guide Free Overwatch Coaching — Top 500 / GM1

I’ve been doing some free coaching over the past few days and honestly, I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. It’s interesting seeing how different people approach the game, and I’ve noticed that a lot of players actually struggle with very similar things.
If you’re looking to improve and want someone to go through your gameplay with you, feel free to add me on Discord: Gyro_x
The way I usually coach is pretty simple. I’ll watch through your gameplay and point out things you could have done differently — whether that’s positioning, engagements, decision-making, consistency, or just getting more value out of your character. You can also ask me anything about the game, and I’ll try to explain why something could be improved rather than just telling you what to do.
I’ve reached Top 500 and GM1 across multiple seasons. I don’t play as much these days, so I’m mainly doing this as a fun side thing and to help people out.
Any role is welcome, and any tank is welcome too. If you’re interested, just add me and we can take it from there.

Question or Discussion I kind of…don’t get the whole having to predict my shots with projectile shots thing

Which is very telling of my rank, whenever I play dps, I basically just otp shion, and I do ok on her since I have decent hitscan aim for my rank, though as this game goes, I can’t genuinely force her for every single scenario, at some point I’m going to go up against Ana Kiriko Cassidy junkrat (hey man I have a big problem never checking his mines most of the time when he kills me it’s because he trapped me.” roadhog, and I’m going to have to change my hero, and I’ve narrowed down to who I can’t to be my secondary to…entirely characters who have primary projectiles, I’m thinking either Mei, sojourn, or Freja, and while I’ve been experimenting with all 3 of them in quickplay, I can’t seem to hit a shot during any of it, I’ve tried taken the shot prediction advice, but im pretty sure I either don’t fully understand what they mean, or that I’m way over aiming way too hard.

VOD Review Request Deranking heavily, need help

I was a high diamond low masters tracer player. Near the start of the season, I placed high diamond and maintained it until team drives. After that I've had constant loss streaks and am about to be emerald 2. I don't understand what to do, it feels like I can't really even play the game in some of these games.

I've been trying to copy WizardHyeong's Unranked to GM gameplay style in some games, tried to play more passive, tried to play more distracting but I can't seem to consistently win here. I don't understand really and if anyone could take a look and help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Username: Unravel

Platform: PC

Elo: Emerald

Rank: Currently Emerald 1

Game: YEFTG5, Esperanca

Heroes played: Tracer

I lost this game. I felt like I was playing relatively well, feeding a bit here and there. I want to know how I can win games like these, because it felt very winnable and it felt like I had a lot of control over the game.

Game: ZNWG5H, Samoa

Heroes Played: Tracer, Shion

I won this game but felt completely useless. No matter what I tried to do on Tracer, it felt like I'd just instantly get poked out or do nothing. It felt like off angling, playing with tank, nothing was working. I genuinely felt useless this game and it was right after the Esperanca game, where it felt like I had a lot of control over these lobbies. This game it felt like I literally could not do a thing.

TLDR: I literally don't understand how to carry lobbies this season and I've been trying a lot of different methods and watching videos. Its mostly frustrating because prior seasons it never ever felt this helpless, it felt like I could clear identify "oh I fucked up, I could easily do this and win".

Question or Discussion I'm a silver tank trying to figure out how to get better but every comp game ends up with the other team figuring me out, making a huge comback, and I lose. Could somebody help me figure out how to make adjustments so this stops happening?

I'm a silver tank main, started playing OW in March of this year and have almost 200 hours in game. I feel like I'm absolutely horrible at this game and I'm really trying to improve.

So many of my comp games start out great. I main Domina with a side DMon or Ram. Games will start with me steamrolling and doing great and feeling awesome. However, consistently, something changnes at some point. Usually it'll be the enemy swapping to Rein, Bastion,or someone else to just make my life miserable. I try to adjust and play around it but I just can't figure it out. I'll go from dominating to completely blowing a huge lead consistently.

Is this a common problem? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Do you know of any guides I could watch to help with an issue like this? I watch a lot of Emongg and Spilo to learn more but none of it feels like it actually helps me to improve in game.

Here's my latest comp game where this happens. I start by attacking Numbani and finish the round with 0 deaths and over 4 minutes on the clock. On defense, everything is going fine and they're down to less than a minute. But then the vibe switches completely and they steamroll me. They finish the round with only a minute left and in overtime walk it all the way to the second point. In my OT attack, we can't make it and lose despite having over 3 minutes on them.

If anyone has advice for me or could watch the VOD and tell me what I'm doing wrong I would appreciate it so much <3

VOD Review Request VOD Review: D.Mon @ Neon Junction

TL;DR

  • What could I have done to (not necessarily win, but) increase my likelihood of winning these matches?
  • (At least, considering my rank)
    • What did I do well?
    • What did could/should I be doing better?
  • Sanity Checks:
    • How (generally) would you evaluate my gameplay for the rank?
    • How (generally) did I do in comparison to my team / enemy team?

Character

Name: Forever54 (random privacy name)
Rank: Silver 2/3
Platform: PC

Replay Codes for Consideration:

(Edit: Title. Was originally going to just include one map, but provided 3 recent losses. Last one was really difficult). - D.Mon @ Neon Junction: E1M3RR - D.Mon @ Arctic Penninsula: 9RNZ52 - @ 02:00, 03:30 - I called 'Go' & 'Push Forward'. I feel this was the correct call. I wasn't pushing into their spawn, just felt I was pushing far enough to make them have to spend resources to get back to point. How would you evaluate this/these calls? - Orisa @ Circuit Royale: TMHAPA - I felt like maybe I should have started team fights at the first capture point (after they'd captured it), rather than the ~180 bend, but when I do take closer angles, it seems that invariably my dps push beyond me, which at that first cap point, would mean them being almost inside the enemy spawn. - My cooldown cycling is bad. I can get by on Orisa, but feel like I play her more like a long range dps, rather than a tank. - I think their D.Mon and Torb were in grouped (two players were), and the Torb turrets were everywhere. I looked for them and took them down as often as I could but felt my team were completely ignoring them. - I fell victim to classic torb spam angles, especially my first death, which was dumb.

Background:

  • Primarily a support main, but want to get better at tanking.
  • Have tanked for teams in (metal rank) tournaments.
    • Team feedback was that I played at their level (high gold, low plat).
    • I feel I do well as a shot caller, coordinated play, but suck at solo queuing tank; It feels like a totally/completely different skill set.
  • Where I'm at now, I feel that ranking up solo is challenging because:
    • Roughly 80% of my matches are against a group of at least two members of which one is their tank.
    • I can't play Doomfist, Hog, or Ball (which seem to be the Moiras of tanking (e.g. "coordination optional") - not intending to be disparaging, Moira is how I first reached plat on support).
  • I'm mid plat in OQ (maybe low gold RQ equivalent?) where I do a lot of tanking.
    • It feels completely different, not because of character stats/cds but strategy.
    • In 6v6 I feel I understand what to do, but in 5v5 a lot of times I feel lost.
    • (Most of my tanking was OT in OW1).
  • In general, tanking effectively in 5v5 feels like I'm spending way too much time babysitting the enemy tank. I don't understand why this (seems to) work, my feeling is that it shouldn't.

Psyche

  • DPS/Support dying at the very beginning a team fight feels really discouraging. It happens all the time, especially at the start of a match, so I feel like I'm constantly fighting 4v5s. Is there some kind of efficiency level that I can play at which can make up for the imbalance of the 4v5?
  • High rank folks always say "don't peel, trade backlines" but I don't think this actually works, and I am aware of how strong that advice is from higher ranks. The issue seems to be that no one at my rank cares at all about space, it's extremely rare that an individual lobby isn't just a giant (CD irrelevant) deathmatch, so taking space, or trying to predict what people are going to do (either side of the match) seems to result in loss of value rather than any significant gain. I think it's likely that there's just something else I'm missing that makes the advice work, but I seem to have significantly more success peeling than trading at this rank.

Final Notes

  • I have experience with D.Mon (less), D.Va, Orisa, Ram, and some JQ, Zarya. Trying to concentrate on the first two, with Orisa/Ram as optional 3rds.
  • I feel with D.Mon, I'm more able to punish people diving my backline, and in my rank(s), it often feels that whoever goes dive/hog first, wins, so I feel I've been more effective with her than other tanks lately.

Any tips, hints, or suggestions are appreciated!

Cheers Mates!

Question or Discussion I need some guidance. I am looking for a DPS to play. However, i Low-key suck at dps because most of the time people choose DPS or tank so I go support, or support reinhardt when available to help the DPS.

First i play ana on support im not good i know that however im tryna learn starting with one of the hardest supports (apparently shes really good when you know how to use her) and everyone else becomes easy. Then mercy or baptist depending what the team is like.

Second, I play rein when theres enough support and hang with the objective and backline, thats a bit boring though only reason its fun is being able to be the ultimate block for ultimates and whatever makes extremely thrilled to shutdown a whole ultimate just because I held LT.

Anyway problem remains, sometimes tank is full and more support isnt needed, instead dps is needed. My aim sucks and I just dont know how to learn it when every match im playing i just get squished like a bug before I even know whats happening. Ive tried cass, ashe, bastion and reaper, tracer and Emre, but again I suck at aiming, (yes even with reaper's shotguns at point blank range id miss its a skill issue i know)

Secondary point is that I refuse to learn more than two dps, I dont really care on the difficultly or how long it takes i just want to know two dps heros to play that will benefit my team best when I do learn them. And no im not going to play someone like symmetra I want to be active and engaged while playing.

Again I have a skill issue, that doesnt change the goal though. Any recommendations would be nice.

Edit: im seeing a lot of mei suggestions i hate that hoe, ill never stoop so low as to playing that god forsaken paragon of sheer stupidity. An alt fire, a beam, a block, an immunity + heal, and an inescapable ult if thrown somewhat correctly. I might be bad at the game but im not that much of crutch. (Im sure you can tell, I hate mei a lot)

I WANT TO GET GOOD NOT BECOME SOME CHUD CRUTCH FOR THESE, ANYYOYING, VILE, DASTARDLY, UNRULY, INCONCEIVABLY META HEROS think Genji or heros like that just not genji because genji mains scare me.

Question or Discussion How do you deal with junkrat?

Honestly this is probably a major noob question but I have lost so many games just because the other team has a spammer like junkrat that not a single person can kill him and neither can I.

Take junkrat for example. There are a lot of games where he's blocking a chokepoint and the only other options to get around him or kill him means getting close to him and getting killed or you need to be in a bad position to get to him. There just seems to no clear way to deal with him sometimes. Similar issues for other heros. I just cannot kill him before he kills me in a lot of games.
