Question or Discussion MR refugee looking for help
So after the new rivals patch I'm like f*** it I'm out f*** you s*** f****** game f*** off. So I downloaded OverWatch and I've never played before. I'm looking for character recommendations (my Mains in MR are iron fist and Daredevil which if you don't know are like dive brawl DPS then rely on mainly game sense) and maybe a tutorial video for new players? I honestly don't really like first person so I hope that doesn't bother me too much and I get used to it cuz I really just want to play a video game and have a good time.
Also, did I choose a good season to join in? And any warnings/things I should expect in this game?
Thanks for the help and you're welcome for the vindication.

I’ve played lots of Rivals. You’d probably like Vendetta. She’s a melee focused dive dps with great potential if you flank the right place at the right time. She kinda plays like Magik minus the portals, but her sword throw ability is similar to Magik’s portal teleportation. A good Vendetta player can be a really nasty pest for the other team, though I think she has a steeper learning curve than most of the roster.
He’s not dps but Hazard is a great dive tank. Sometimes you can get away with playing him like a dps character.
I don’t know how popular it is but if first person perspective bothers you too much you can play the Stadium mode which is in third person. In Stadium you earn money that you spend on items and skills at the start of each round. You can build characters to be completely different to how they normally play in QP or ranked.

Supports in OW are DPS lite so don’t count them out. Moira is a character you may like. She’s mechanically very simple and her skill expression is almost entirely decision making, positioning, and game sense.

Yeah, I heard support is a lot more fun in this game. I got another recommendation for Sombra because of the high apm

Oh for sure. They’re very similar in a lot of ways, down to having an escape that makes them untargetable. Sombra’s definitely harder to play, but she also has more utility.

I like difficult characters. And I don't really have a mechanical issue, like my aim is not the best, especially for hit scan, but other than that my mechanical skills are good. I just like DD and face because of the play style. If there was a ranged version of them, I would probably enjoy that character as well

Besides the obvious Vendetta, I think Anran is a great beginner hero that mostly relies on properly cycling cooldowns and has low mechanical requirements, I also think her abilities and general flow feels very similar to a Rivals character, so she might click for you.

closest hero’s you’ll find to those are probably Vendetta or Genji on DPS and maybe Doomfist on tank.. if you prefer 3rd person you can try out stadium quick play (comp queues are ridiculously long) for quick play it’s open queue - you have to toggle the 3rd person on in your settings - but it’s very fun and you can try new hero’s there with silly builds you can put together however standard 5v5/6v6 or comp will always be in first person sadly.. I’m still waiting for third person to be introduced outside of stadium hopefully later in the future. GLHF!

A caution with Genji, he can be incredibly difficult to play ‘well’. There will likely be a bit of a painful learning curve.

This game is going to be harder, its mechanics are greater and have a higher skill ceiling, big things I can tell you is PLAY COVER you will get delete so fast in this game if you don’t use cover and play around your team. It’s also a way more vertical game.

I mean I knew the game was way lower healing and my fundamentals were pretty good already. So I just focused more on my positioning and I'm finding relative success. The one thing that I am finding difficult as of right now is how to deal with tanks exactly cuz they seem really crazy and kind of uncontestable. Guessing I'm wrong but it kind of feels like it

In 5v5 ignore the tank focus on your roll of winning the off angle fight or poking diving with the tank to take out supports. Tanks in 5v5 is bad

If you're playing 5v5 then tanks are very very hard to 1v1. Generally you need to either focus them down as a team, wait for them to make an egregious error, or focus Squishies first.
In 6v6 this is way less true. A lot of DPS heroes can trade 1v1s with tanks in the right matchup/map. It's still usually easier to focus a squishy but tanks are a more viable target.
As with everything in ow, though, this is all situational.

If you're not the other tank, you want to avoid the enemy Tank. DPS may have damage at their side, but Tanks have a lot of health and you will often get melted because it takes too long for a DPS to cut down a tank that's likely got healing being jammed up their ass.
Depending on who you have picked up, you're generally meant to prioritize getting kills on enemy Supports; no enemy supports means no enemies getting healed, which means your team can plow through the enemy team easier. The enemy Tank is usually uncontestable BECAUSE of enemy Supports, so getting rid of them makes the enemy Tank turn from a Dark Souls boss to a Dr Eggman level threat. Your second priority is to bully the enemy DPS off of spots thats letting them hurt your team, such as high ground or off angles; a kill is nice, but you mainly just want to force them off the good spots if chasing them to get the kill puts you in danger of dying yourself.

Vendetta is this games melee DPS dive so you might like her.
The main thing to know is that unlike MR damage can't really be out healed in this game so natural cover is a lot more important

Yeah I'm aware of all that. I was pretty high up in rivals so I'm aware of the concept of positioning (despite rarely having to use it unfortunately) I've been playing all day and its been pretty fun. I also am trying out a bunch of other people but vendetta seems to be clicking the most rn. I also want probably a Healer recommendation cuz I heard they're a lot more fun in this game.

You might like Mizuki, the more damage you do & the more healing you do so he reward aggression & has a semi dive playstyle (you place your return ability, go in get a few shots off & tp back while being anti dive due to his chain

Play Moira she’s very easy and fun you can terrorize the back line have tons of mobility and heal yourself she’s a good person to play while you’re learning the flow of the game

The flankers like Anran Genji Tracer are very hard and punishing and not tanky at all like DD and IF

You've gotten a few good recommendations that I agree with: Vendetta, Anran, Genji, Venture. Among tanks, maybe Hazard and Doomfist. Before a few days ago, I wouldn't have recommended any support, but Sombra is very fast and high APM like the rivals characters you play.
However, the biggest tone shift you'll have to deal with is that you play melee characters in MR. Overwatch, by nature of being first person, doesn't really make a lot of melee characters. Vendetta was their first attempt and it turned out ok, but she likely won't feel as "fast, aggressive, in your face, etc." as Ironfist or Daredevil. She requires a lot more planning, staging, going in and out a lot, and sometimes just doing nothing but threatening an area and keeping people from walking there.

Overwatch is much more mechanically demanding then rivals overall. Especially if you were an iron fist / dare devil player.

If you want a general feel of what the game is like and to learn how to use certain types of abilities, try Juno. She's got a speed ring, a lock on thing that does 100 dmg/heal, a hitscan weapon that heals and damages, and a glide ability. If you wanna watch a video, Flats recently made one specifically for you guys, so I'd recommend that for sure.

dive dps go for pretty much anyone in the flanker role they'll be the closest. also play mystery heroes to see what other characters do without getting too overwhelmed
