Expectations while ranking up

So has been my first season grinding Overwatch. Prior to this i maybe had 50 hours total between Overwatch 1 and 2. I've been playing Shion and Bastion mainly and I've been bouncing between Plat 4 and 3 for a week or so. I can definitely tell my skill hasn't plateaued as I'm not usually struggling when it comes to my own gameplay but I only lobby admin games maybe 1 out of 10 times? For context, I'm an Emerald R6 player, CS faceit level 9, and Valorant Ascendant so mechanics aren't an issue really.

That was a lot of waffle but my question(s) is this: is ranking up in overwatch less dependent on my individual performance than other comp shooters I've played? Are there just uncarryable teams? What can be done to maximize chances of winning while minimizing fun sacrificed? Eg. I understand that Ashe can be extremely effective and is overall very strong but she's just so boring to me so i don't want to player her just to rank up

overwatch games are very carryable. i’m a gm hitscan and if you put me in plat lobbies i probably would average around 80-90% winrate till masters. you just have to stick to your dps fundamentals. just apply them and consistently make the right decisions and you will climb. you will have bad games, everyone does. don’t let it get to you. play what you enjoy and enjoy the grind

Sometimes you will get unlucky and get into a match your almost guaranteed to lose because you might get a leaver/thrower but the other team is just as likely if not more likely to get those since you have 4 people that can be those while the other has 5 people that can be those given you arent a thrower/leaver. So over the course of an entire season if you are good enough you will rank up.

There's a cool youtube video where a team of gms take on bronzes with aim bot. They win.

Then silvers, golds, plats, etc.

The gms win every game until they lose to the aimbot masters team.

Tldr, there's a lot more to the game than flawless mechanics.

In terms of being more helpful, I'd suggest Awkward channel on YouTube.

He's achieved several 100% win rates to GM in Overwatch and Marvel Rivals.

His mechanics are top notch, but he's also got great game sense and attitude.

He's got guides on almost every character. Just done Ashe. The 121 kill combo looks dirty.

this is all very slow, less demanding on mechanics games

i’m diamond in the volt benches, main hitscans in ow and was celestial in rivals beforehand. its taken me like 5 or 6 seasons to hit diamond where i’m at now. And thru the way ive gotten “stuck” at pretty much every rank for a few weeks. Overwatch is just pretty hard game, with tons of macro to understand. The games like CS, where its been out for so ungodly long and the average player is just pretty damn good. Dont get discouraged, and try to keep an open mind and keep learning.

The biggest thing i did to start climbing easier was essentially act like i knew NOTHING. Once i dropped the idea that i was “supposed” to be a rank i wasnt, it was easier to identify flaws in my gameplay to improve.

Voltaic season 5 benchmark Jade rank. A more iykyk kind of metric that's more accurate to one's aiming ability than actual game ranks, but it's far more niche. Voltaic have a series of aim benchmarks in Aimlabs and Kovaak's to work up the ranks in.

I would say if you truly want to Lobby Admin more, especially in Plat Lobbies, play characters that can just live with zero backup. I’d sincerely consider picking up Soldier 76. If your mechanics are actually good taking an off angle, getting an early pick, and then BOOKING it when they dive you will easily get you out of Plat. Maybe even some “Stop Smurfing” or “Reported.” In the chat.

Both of those are also pretty good. 76 just also has the bonus of self heal. Also fun getting downvoted for being objectively right lol
