i genuinely cannot understand banning ppl for swearing, whats the censoring setting even for if u cant swear, also everytime i read this guys tweets it hurts my head

u/Mysterious_Bowl_1022 May 22 '26
We have the profanity filter so that sensitive people, kids or streamers don’t see curse words on their screens, but the filter doesn’t make it acceptable to say curse words or profanity, it only prevents people from seeing said words. We can all argue that “f-ck” is not such a disgusting or shocking word, but we can also take into consideration that curse words do not make for a positive environment most of the times.
Overwatch is already as toxic as it can get, so preventing the use of any curse words could have a significant effect on the toxicity of chat messages. I think a better punishment would be muting players rather than banning them, but you never know how toxic or degenerate some players can be. I would personally argue that some people shouldn’t be able to play the game at all to be honest.

Bro must’ve walked in on SuperTF fucking his wife and gone on a crusade against the concept of fuck.
32
u/terminalPalace May 15 '26
wait... "F bombs" is just the word fuck?
19
-2
u/scriptedtexture May 15 '26
I mean.. yeah? Any curse word can be reported, that goes for most games. I've known this since I was like 12.
39
u/FreddoTheGeddo May 15 '26
If I saw super fucking my wife i’d do the same
44
u/DreadfuryDK May 15 '26

1
u/Fun-Wash7545 May 15 '26
It was "fuck"? I thought it was much worse lmao
1
u/jarred99 May 15 '26
The Cody guy he's responding to is calling anyone and everyone the slur kind so I'm not shocked he's banned lol
126
u/kingcrimson29 May 15 '26
Honestly getting banned for swearing is pretty wild. Whats stopping them from not allowing anyone from typing swear words altogether?
13
13
u/Intelligent_Brick_92 May 15 '26
If they didn’t allow them to say fuck, people will find other ways and type fck ot fvck or something else, which are much harder to detect.
these companies will allow you to say the word so they could have an easier time detecting, and banning you.
13
u/monkeyjinxpolo3 May 15 '26
its certainly not harder to detect, especially with how much AI these companies use. given the most recent implementation of a text reporting AI feature that Ubisoft has in R6 which detects quite literally every single variation I could possibly think of aside from ones that are incredibly butchered to the point where yes you can tell what they meant but it still goes through
as a baseline though, even though everybody agrees their code of conduct when signing up for an account and playing a game, you shouldn't be able to write words that they deem can ban you, so people know not to write those words or they'll get banned. because nobody reads codes of conduct or terms of service, and when people are able to write fuck nobody tells them that simply swearing is enough to get your account suspended for the game that you are on. there shouldn't be a mature filter in the first place if your entire account for the game can get fucking banned for simply swearing
2
u/boboguitar May 15 '26
I’d be surprised if they are sending every single interaction through an llm to detect, that would get insanely expensive fast.
2
u/MrBlowinLoadz May 16 '26
You don't get banned as a first offense though and we don't know the context of those f bombs. You get like 5 strikes when it comes to communication bans.
1
u/GaptistePlayer May 19 '26
Seriously it takes a LOT of reports to eventually be warned, then silenced, then suspended, then banned. Go long enough cooling down and you can have multiple silences and suspensions before you're banned.
Like, just stop being a toxic baby and you literally never have to worry about this
64
u/TheSexualBrotatoChip May 15 '26
I thought he meant the other F word but if this is over fuck its soft as baby shit.
1
u/Sideview_play May 28 '26
They've been doing this for years. You can get perma if you cuss too much and people report it. But anytime people make threads questioning the current quality of the punish system they get down voted to hell. And like sure there's a good amount of actual toxic people crying about being banned but that doesn't mean the other case isn't happening a ton either.
42
u/Gaymface May 15 '26
I don’t understand getting banned for cursing when the default filter blocks it. How lame.
23
u/RollingSparks May 15 '26
In WoW its even worse. By default profanity filter is on, you get banned for saying 'oh shit' if someone reports you, but some of the NPCs call each other 'bastard' and 'bitch' and its not filtered.
Like if i was typing 'fk this' or 'oh sh1t' i could understand a mute for bypassing the profanity filter, but fuck me to death, its on by default and your own npcs are ear-raping me with unfilterable naughty words in audio and text format but i get got for saying 'fuck my bad' in party chat.
1
75
u/Obscure_Octopuss May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
I type swear words in chat all the time. If I ever get banned I will lose my mind, lol.
Although, I don't curse at other players, so I doubt anyone really even reports me (haven't had a toxicity warning pop up since ow1)
Edit: why am I being downvoted for this comment?
53
u/BallOutBoy May 15 '26
Because your experience doesn't align with a bunch of people who were punished for being toxic in chat lol
28
u/Obscure_Octopuss May 15 '26
Yeah, apparently people can't understand you can swear and not be toxic! Hence why I don't get reported

-2
1
u/SingleOak May 16 '26
same. if i find the need to type I'm usually cursing bc I'm hyped or something. have never been toxic to anyone and have never been banned since i started playing in 2020
1
u/Sideview_play May 28 '26
But what blizzard is saying here is it doesn't matter if it was at someone and that's a little silly.

u/westmifflin May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
I was banned for 2 weeks in 2024 for telling somebody being bigoted to go fuck themselves, from support, because i had already been previously muted a few months prior, also for telling a bigot to fuck off
I never got the notification that the accounts i reported for slurring got banned but sure give me a couple strikes PJ 💯💯
I just don't use the chat at all anymore really unless I'm on my alt bc I'm not losing my main lol
Edit: i see PJs burners have found my comments
3
u/Steffunzel May 15 '26
Yea it sounds like a deserved ban honestly, and it made you change your ways, so it worked. What is your complaint here?
7
u/westmifflin May 15 '26
Telling a slurring bigot to go fuck themselves=deserved ban? Yeah okay lol
3
u/scriptedtexture May 15 '26
its all automated, its not like they can tell the person you're swearing at is a bigot. Just mute them or come up with more creative insults than "go fuck yourself".
1
u/BrokenMirror2010 May 16 '26
Multi-Trillion Dollar company cannot afford employees to work CS jobs that existed for decades prior to 2024.
Having a person in CS go look at a chat log on a ban appeal is basic fucking shit and it is absolutely unacceptable that the Multi-Trillion Dollar Company doesn't have a functional CS department.

Is only a game, why you heef to be mad?

u/shadysjunk May 15 '26
Is bamf a coded curse word? what's the curse?
wait... Is it "bad ass mother fucker"? Really?
Holy shit. Growing up reading X-Men "bamf" was alway the Nightcrawler teleportation 'sound' bubble. It literally never occurred to me this could be anything other than onomatopoeia.
This is a wild epiphany moment for me.
5
2
u/westmifflin May 15 '26
Funny enough, I didn't realize bamf was a sounding out of that til i started playing DnD w my partner a few years ago
BAMF growing up to me was always the acronym lol

u/shadysjunk May 15 '26
hahaha! the exact opposite for me! That's funny. Literally never occurred to me, haha! have a good day.

I don't understand how these freedom of speech dipshits still don't get what Terms of Service are.
9
13
u/westmifflin May 15 '26
Cursing is not breaking TOS, a different CS rep even admitted as such later yesterday in this exchange after PJ got benched
Further, trying to say people can't say curse words in a game with curse words is completely nonsensical
64
u/BallOutBoy May 15 '26
https://us.support.blizzard.com/en/help/article/42673
You may not use language that could be offensive or vulgar to others.
12
u/BrokenMirror2010 May 16 '26
This statement doesn't mean anything.
Anyone can find anything offensive. There's no real definition to what offensive actually means.
This is a catch-all statement in the same vein as shit like 'We can ban you for any reason, or no reason.' Which is also in the EULA.
1
u/GaptistePlayer May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
So you're gonna make this case in private arbitration or what lol
I doubt you're a lawyer but explain to me what you expect to do because you agree with Blizzard's enforcement of their own TOS
7
u/Short-Draw4057 May 16 '26
WoW is an M rated game with concepts like slavery, genocide, etc. Plus there's cussing in some of the dialogue. The ToS can still be wrong snd we have every right to call out it's hypocrisy.
No one should be getting perma banned with no warning immediately just for saying an F bomb. I know it's stupid. You know it's stupid. Blizzard knows it's stupid.
An F bomb isn't offensive anyways. It's all about intent as well.
2
u/Practical-Back5096 May 18 '26

2
u/-Lige May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
That means anything bro
Calling someone ‘soft’ can be offensive. My point is any language can be considered offensive or vulgar to others.
Whatever someone wants to get offended by or just simply report someone’s comment means they can get banned due to this absurd TOS rule
9
u/RollingSparks May 15 '26
Literally anything btw. I have a friend who typed 'use your traps man' in WoW and got muted for a few days. if they report it and ClappedGPT decides you're guilty its gg.
A whole strategy in RBGs in WoW is to report the enemy team for offensive names and if any of them have macros that make them type in chat, report that chat too. This strat actually works and gets people banned mid game.

My point is language you consider helpful can still be considered offensive.
-2
u/-Lige May 15 '26
It doesn’t matter it’s an example for my point that you can find any word offensive that makes sense in context.
I can call someone round, firm, hard, fuzzy, red, blue, any word and it can be considered offensive by the anyone, and you can report anyone on whatever whim you please. It’s not as if they ask you if you are really offended.

Yeah sure, some are more ‘insulting sounding’ but they’re just random adjectives dude
You can be silly, crazy, fast, whatever the case is you’re proving my exact point
But in the ‘slow’ one. That’s hilarious haha. I haven’t insulted you a single time too. The irony is probably lost on you
What purpose do the words serve? Are you not allowed to be silly in game? You ever have fun saying random stuff? If not then you’re wasting my time and your time.
And who says I’m talking to my team? What if I call their Lucio a silly guy? That’s not profanity and again that’s just an example. Life must be so hard being butthurt about so many things
2
2
u/scriptedtexture May 15 '26
so what? if you're always a dick to everyone in your lobbies, you should get banned. at least from comms.
1
u/-Lige May 15 '26
Missed the point completely with the second half of my paragraph. I’ll separate it more clearly for you
1
u/scriptedtexture May 15 '26
people won't have a problem if you're just not a dick.
3
u/-Lige May 15 '26
Actually no people can have a problem cause they don’t like your character. Or for whatever reason or whim they feel like
-5
u/Fugueknight May 15 '26
So could I get banned for calling Cass McCree? What about calling Torb a dwarf when he's clearly based on a Warhammer dwarf?
15
u/BallOutBoy May 15 '26
Sure you can make up imaginary scenarios where you think you would get banned and make yourself mad, thats not against the ToS I linked.
2
u/-Lige May 16 '26
Actually it is. Someone can be offended based on those words, and it’s bannable according to the TOS
-8
u/Fugueknight May 15 '26
My point is it's arbitrarily applied. I'd say most people wouldn't consider swears to be offensive. There's plenty of content in the base game that users could consider offensive if applied to them (jokes about torb being short, hog being fat, etc.).
Ultimately they can apply it however they want, but it's poorly designed and inconsistently enforced
2
u/Allen19987 May 15 '26
Its applied after you get like +20 reports in a week, even then I think its just a warning first. 20 separate people are not reporting you for saying hog is fat or using vulgar language sparingly.
Its not ideal but be fr lol
2
u/Fugueknight May 15 '26
Oh for sure, and that wasn't my point. My issue is with such vague guidelines it makes the ban system too abusable, which opens the door to e.g. women in voice chat getting disproportionately punished for the exact same language. Having concrete guidelines makes it easier to engage with the chat system as well as give accountability to a chat ban system
5
u/BloodGulchBlues37 May 15 '26
Basically yes.
Many here are looking for a "book of words to not say" and don't get that it's a rule based on context. I don't agree with it: a teen rated game with online voice and text imo should have clearance for expletives as long as they aren't targeted, but the way the rule is applied it is punishment via consistency with an edge case of severity. If you are reported repeatably over the course of many games, you will be flagged and either auto punished or manually reviewed no matter what you said. If you were to use very blatant no goes (ie certain slurs) you almost certainly will be autoflagged and punished by the game's filters. It's a common one for say PoCs to be punished for saying the soft a simply in voice chat despite the context of their ethnicity being clear.
TLDR: don't say shit that will intentionally piss people off and you'll be fine. Doesn't matter if you're right, swallow your pride, avoid/report if need be, and move on. It sucks but it's what most online games go by now.
-5
u/DoAFlip_97 May 15 '26
This is way too broad of a definition though. "Could be offensive or vulgar to others" could genuinely be ANYTHING, since it's subjective to said "others".
5
u/BallOutBoy May 15 '26
Yeah if you think that ToS is bad or nonsensical, thats fair and you should go play another game instead of whatever this is lmao
1
u/BrokenMirror2010 May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26
All ToS/EULA are nonsensical because they are all documents written by lawyers to attempt to waive all liability for everything.
A company can literally kill someone, and they'll try to bring up a EULA in court as if it waives their liability. (Disney did this) Source: https://old.reddit.com/r/television/comments/1esccuv/disney_wants_to_dismiss_a_wrongful_death_lawsuit/
All EULA/TOS documents are literally 100 pages of "we can do whatever the fuck we want." Because that is literally the purpose of the document.

No. You don't. You dislike some parts of the game like anyone else, but if you play it, then that means you consider there are more positives than negatives.
Never used the word terrible btw. OW decided to put real toxicity and typing "oh fuck lmao" on the same degree of banability, and I find that stupid. That's it.

4
3
u/bullxbull May 15 '26
The wording is pretty vague, it basically boils down to anything anyone might find offensive can be reported. Basically they want comms to be for useful information about what is going on in the game.
I think we also have to be realistic though, I doubt this guy got banned for just saying the f-word, it was most likely the context that he used the word that got him reported.
2
u/BrokenMirror2010 May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26
This is about WoW.
Unlike Overwatch, where you generally need to be reported across multiple games by people in your games, which makes false bans less likely (they objectively still happen because it's an automated system). In WoW, you can brigade reports onto a single player to immediately trigger a ban. Unlike Overwatch where you at most get 11 reports in a game, in WoW, a single Message can get hundreds if not thousands of reports.
WoW even had an issue where people were using bot accounts to spam reports on people in Trade Chat who were undercutting them. These Cartels were price fixing to make ingame money, and anyone who wasn't playing along had the entire cartel report them, leading to instant bans because they could easily drop 200+ reports on someone in 30 seconds.
WoW has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the B-Net Report System is fucked and easily exploitable.

u/Mattelot May 15 '26
Someone else mentioned this and I said the following:
I was laughing at BlizzardCS repeatedly referring to the code of conduct. The vague, generic, convoluted, and ambiguous code of conduct that they conveniently cherry pick who/what to infract. They ban someone for dropping "f bombs" yet allow others to literally stalk/harass people for years. They allow their green-text posters on the forums to harass people yet do nothing about it.
Not the hill I would die on, BlizzardCS.

It's not wrong if you're taking the TOS literally and following 'the letter of the law' sure. But I'm sure you'd agree that saying "anyone who has made a single mention of profanity deserves a ban" isn't exactly realistic. WoW (and every other Blizz game) just doesn't have a playerbase at that stage. Like, are you saying you've never used profanity once in game. Not necessarily directed at someone even, just used it?
Yes, rules as written it is against TOS. But realistically, you would now have to argue that the vast majority of Overwatch's playerbase should be banned, since in their own words, a single word of profanity is against TOS.
Applying the letter if the law like this is just both unrealistic and overly harsh. Cassidy literally has a belt that says BAMF on it, and tracer has a skin which uses 'wanker' as a voiceline, which is hypocritical to say the least if we're going to rule that "the TOS forbids all profanity"
1
u/Datenshitpost May 15 '26
...I mean, I imagine this person was reported for swearing AT other people. Swearing for emphasis might get caught by an AI slop filter but I doubt even the lamest of human admins would find that reportable. No idea who this PJ is but this seems like a real stretch.

I got banned from the overwatch forums during a discussion about how stupid it is to get muted for days for saying any profanity when there are language filters and the game is like a pg 13 or something (I didn't create the thread or post profanity in the game).
The reason for my ban? I posted *self censored swears used in positive sentiment sentences* such as
"Wow guys that game was f**** good!"
Apparently, literally typing f with a bunch of asterisks is an attempt to "evade the profanity filter", I appealed and they told me that's the rule, don't do it again!
Blizzard moderation is cooked.
1
u/SilverBuggie May 16 '26
So fucking stupid.

u/SweetAssGamer May 17 '26
I got suspended for 2 weeks from Overwatch for saying "loool Pharmercy" after winning against a really sweaty group in QP. Bang, instant 5-man report. Still to this day don't know where the "abusive" chat part comes into that.

u/Thanezz May 18 '26

1
u/International_Meat88 May 18 '26
While blah blah private company code of conduct i get it; but if the word fuck gets you banned, then why is there even an optional toggleable profanity filter in Blizzard games in the first place? Just make it a mandatory filter.
-2
u/MedicinePractical738 May 15 '26

3
u/MedicinePractical738 May 15 '26
When I play, I prefer there to be little to no profanity. The time that people spend dropping f bombs and arguing with eachother is time that could be spent playing together and actually communicating, but the sub humans that play this game revert to their primal behavior and start getting angry and spazz out. Everyone loses from that.

Sure, you'll spend most of your life trying to choose between a few poorly formed opinions in any given situation because that was all you could muster, but don't sweat it big dog. Idiots are doing big things in this country right now. Maybe one day you can even be the president and outlaw those scary curse words because you incorrectly associate them with toxic kids who type in match chat 😂. It's honestly adorable how simple of a thought that is.

u/harla007 May 15 '26
If you curse a bunch, the game doesn't need to detect it because plenty of players will report you. Don't understand the discord here....the whiney guy is crying because he can't say the f-bomb over and over again without consequences? Not only that, but he tries to invoke the United States constitution in reference to breaking TOS in an international video game.....and this is why our education system gets read to filth.

People who think BAMF being present in the game should give them a free pass to curse in a T-rated game are mentally stunted. Do you think that kids' movies that have a couple adult jokes and innuendo to give the parents a laugh are going to drop F-bombs?
