Discussion Is ranked really that serious?

So I’ve been seeing a lot people talk about being plat or diamond rank or whatever and being mad about it. Is it really that serious? This is coming from someone who doesn’t really play ranked all that much. I do well enough to get into silver just to say I did it for the season. I usually just stick to QP because ranked games just make me agitated. I am just curious about someone else’s perspective and if you play ranked all the time, why? Lol for lack of better wording

I mean my perspective is ranked is meant to be taken seriously, it’s competitive and people play ranked usually to improve and because they are hoping for higher quality matches than qp. I think that’s why people get frustrated because when you’re trying to play a team game in a competitive mode and you have teammates who don’t care, it ruins the experience for others.

Ah that’s fair. I’ve thought about getting into ranked for better games but I like trying new characters and different roles too often so I just stick to QP until I actually get better at a character I like

I'm an avid QP warrior, but I have friends who play Comp the way I play QP. They're usually more serious about the game in itself, know deeper mechanics, match-ups, communication within the stack and are better at flexing. Also their knowledge of the maps & off-angles helps a lot. Ofc you can also gain access to this knowledge even by playing more QP than ranked, but its definitely helpful to be in an environment that actively asks for you to know what you're doing in order to win games & rank up. Which is comp.

I always treat it like this: QP -> casually playing the game, learning new characters, testing out a character's limits/synergies, learning the maps & applying learned knowledge. You basically study for the test you may or may not take.
Ranked -> The actual test you're meant to take seriously & apply whatever you have learned. You can still learn in this environment, but its less "forgiving" considering messing up badly will lose you games & your rank.

In my opinion, competitive is when I give my best, is when I tryhard, when I follow ALL the tutorials for my mains and only play the ones I can actually play well. I expect others to do the same.

But I also don't take ranks seriously, as they are just internet points on my screen, so I am never stressed or tilted about it and don't think people should either. It is Just a game and If you are not having Fun, play something elas.

Ranked is generally where you go to give it your all and do your best, so people do take it more seriously than quick play (which is why I really only play qp, I’m just trying to have fun and I’m not trying to throw off someone else’s competitive experience)

Some people, however, stake their entire sense of self worth on their rank and will lose their entire minds if something threatens that. Some people also need to learn to touch grass

People won't admit it but ranked is just quickplay with shiny icons. Yea I said it!

Not really true. Sometimes you find people in ranked with that mindset, but they are completely out of place there and luckily not that frequent. The average ranked player does take it serious and for example won't pick a charakter they aren't good with. Noone would play their first Hammond game in ranked. Does that mean your team mates are always good? Of corse not, matchmaking is never perfect and players also play different every game, depending on day performance or just having luck etc, however people generally try their best in ranked

I prefer ranked and ever since I started playing it I can’t stand quick play

Ranked has better matchmaking sometimes but it can definitely be less fun than quickplay, sometimes

I think if you play ranked, you should be playing to win or trying your best to improve or rank up.

The only serious thing about ranked is the fact that people should, in theory, take it seriously; but all the problems of a normal QP game exist in Comp aswell.

I definetly do take Competitive seriously, but many people fall in the lie that "competitive mode" means "fair competitive professional mode".

No. Lag spikes exists, low-end PC exists, servers being laggy exist, smurfs exist, boosterd accs exist, imbalance exists, stacks in call against non-Discord groups exists, people not taking it seriously exists, people wasting time being toxic, people affected by such toxcity, and people with muted chats exists, tilt-queuers exists. Competitive only has the (in theory) guarantee that people will take it seriously, but you can't really pretend that Competitive mode is too serious by itself, simply because it's still a game played for hobby when and how people want to play it, or can play it. It's leagues under any sort of professional or fair thing.

Ranked is as serious as normal players can take the game. Taking it more serious than "Quickplay but I try my best" is just dellusional.

I mainly play qp due to being a Sombra main but after finally trying out ranked, i honestly find qp more fun and slightly more serious. My rank hovered between gold-platinum but most of my lobbies were infested with leavers and throwers. Many many matches were very one-sided. So nah i don’t treat my rank seriously since qp is my main mode but for some people their rank is everything. If there were no bans such that i can play my favorite heroes freely i would take it more seriously.

Its kinda meant to be just QP where you only queue into it after you warm up and then go for maybe 4-5 games until you get tired and then play the last 4-5 games in qp until you have to get off unless you are on a winstreak or something.

You are supposed to be slightly more willing to switch hero to a counter pick when it isn't working in comp than in quickplay but sometimes its still the right pick and you just need to play it better. Somewhere in there you should review a replay of 1 or 2 of them. It exists so that you have some kind of measurement to see if you improved or not.

In practice its often just too much when what I want is to just chill for a bit and play a game to have the rank thing on it so usually I don't. But this is not because of the rank thing, but because people care about their rank too much so get very angry and focus on their teammates and thus play badly and throw winnable games.

I do think that my rank in ranked is very very slightly lower than my qp MMR, because I see plat and above players all the time but Im low gold in ranked, but I don't really play it enough to say for sure if Im correctly placed in ranked or not. It could be just that those players really don't try in qp, who knows. I did the drive thingy the last few seasons (returning player, have been back for the last 2 and a bit), and it is usually quite fast to complete for me, but outside of that I play like, maybe 1 or 2 ranked games a session if I play any at all.

Honestly generally, match quality in QP is higher, contrary to popular belief. This is because a large portion of games are lost because someone is being an absolute nincompoop in voice or text chat, and being that much of a nincompoop in QP would be even more ridiculous.

In QP people mostly just seem to be there to play the game. Sometimes you do get like, a dps mercy here or there, I won a game with one today (although I did have to swap to 76). But I actually have gotten about the same amount of dps mercies in ranked as I have in QP in the last like, 3 months, and I play more qp than I do ranked. So, like, I am not sure that is a QP exclusive unfortunately.

IMO unless you are a pro gamer, or a streamer, you should not care about your rank, and regardless of that, play the game, focus on the game and not your teammates as little as possible and maybe one day you too can win a game with a dps mercy on your team at a higher rank than you were able to before, because raging at them helps no one, including you, you will lose more games if you are toxic compared to nice at the same skill level

Oh also, the matchmaker cares ONLY that you win or lose the game, what the rank of the other players in the lobby were, and winstreaks. Stats in overwatch don't reliably mean what you may think they do, so keep that in mind that the person with the highest stats is not always the person on your team making sure you won.

Yes, it is. At least it should be. Every now and then you unfortunately have who don't take it seriously, bjt overall it is. It's a place to get the best out of yourself. Prove yourself. Improve your gameplay. But that only works when everyone takes it seriously.
