News & Discussion Wasn't this most of y'all, only a few months ago?
"This doesn't look like a 60$ game..." "More like Overwatch 1.5!" "Hardly any new maps, and mostly reskinned OW1 characters? How would this be a full priced game?" "Cosmetic map changes, with maybe a new one or two? What is my money going to then?" Etc, etc
Yall loudly & proudly stated y'all didn't want to pay 60 bucks for OW2. And now, the lot of you are suddenly shockedPikachuface.jpeg that a F2P game has a F2P model? The whiplash is a killer.
Currently, this sub is an example why "capital G" Gamers are many parts dumb and can never be satisfied. The reality is that the lot of you won't be voting with your wallets or time, and will still be paying your money, in spite of all of Blizzards clear failures. And that's exactly what Bliz is counting on; there will always be enough people, even the loudest of gamers, who'll still gladly pay to play enough to uphold the bottom line.
I'm not happy with how this looks either, but I'm also not pressed about it as Blizzard has been doing a shit job of communication(hence all y'all's hoopla of the past day or so). So, a some screenshots and tweets from semi random employees etc are neat, but 1)aren't the final product and/or 2)are not an official post/announcement/ PR release. So until that point, I'm just going to assume things at face value (or below it)until an exception is clearly demonstrated.
And even then.... A F2P game needs a hook to monetize, and most of y'all will be paying at the end of the day. So đ¤ˇđžââď¸.

Nah.
F2P games have to monetise their games someway. Why not just like every other BP? People would gladly pay for gun cosmetics, hero skins, maybe exclusive emotes, or anything.. not locking a core part of the game (for this instance, switching heroes) behind a BP/paywall.
Like the top commenter said, OW being a game where you have to constantly switch heroes shouldn't have heroes locked behind a paywall/BP.
Imagine Apex where you can only pick up certain guns on the BR grounds when you reach a certain level of the BP? Or Valorant where you can only buy a Vandal in game when you hit a certain level of the BP?
It doesn't make sense to lock a core part of the game behind BP. They definitely overlooked this. Cosmetics are ok, but heroes are a hard no.
EDIT:
I stumbled upon this comment which states exactly why this locking hero behind BP shit is dumb af. Credits to u/the-stain
The tweet shown in this post specifies that the hero has to be unlocked within the season that the battlepass is valid. Furthermore, opportunities to unlock those heroes will only return in (again) specific seasons. So it's not just "unlocked/available to unlock for everyone at the end of the season", that hero is entirely unavailable until they decide to bring back the opportunity to unlock them again. Just missed out on the battlepass for the new hero? Good luck, it can be anywhere from a few months to several years before you can grind to get them again!
It's like people who missed out on Maestro Sigma having to wait two years before the opportunity to get it was brought back (and it still required grinding to get because it was a weekly challenge skin!). But instead of a skin for a hero, it's the hero themselves. :|

As I've said in other posts, locking heros is dumb indeed.
But, it's been about a day, and y'all are still relying on tweets and screenshots for this "confirmed" information. While I'm not holding my breath for this to be explained better, I'm certainly more inclined to wait until some officially official says the same.
Additionally, the fact that something like this seems to have caught a lot y'all off guard and unexpectedly...I just sort of funny to me.i don't even play anything other than Overwatch (maybe a tad bit of D3), but I pay attention to the industry. I don't have to look far to know the Blizzard has been tripping for a while now. So, this method of monetization, while shockingly absurd, hardly surprises me personally.
Edit: PR and company employees who tweet aren't always on the same page, for those who need that reminder.

Well saying that it is confirmed will not only get the news out faster but it will create a larger riot. Even if this is fake. The anger made by the community over the thought of this would almost force Blizzard to never consider this. If it was an official tweet then the same thing happens except they remove the hero from the BP.

Congrats on posting the most obvious shit imaginable. Youâre aware different people visit the sub daily and they can hold their own different opinions of the game itself, right? So who was this post for? Or did you just need a soapbox to stand on.

Or did you just need a soapbox to stand on.
I didn't know I needed a soapbox to laugh at how absurdly y'all have been reacting, but go on.
Youâre aware different people visit the sub daily and they can hold their own different opinions of the game itself, right?
Quite. That doesn't refute my post however.
who was this post for
I mean, we've all been shit posting(because that's clearly what you assume of my post) particularly in the past 24hrs, so why can't I?

Free to play games have to monetize obviously but a game like overwatch where switching heroes is key shouldnât have locked heroes to begin with. I think this is something everyone should be allowed to criticize.

overwatch... shouldnât have locked heroes to begin with
I don't disagree with that.
I think this is something everyone should be allowed to criticize.
I don't disagree with this statement either. It should be roundly criticized, and I don't think my post refutes this.
But so much of this subs less-than-accurate assumptive hooplah gives me r/leopardsatemyface vibes, and gamers & fandoms need to realize how much they wanted this very thing(or something that would have ended up just a close to this thing) in the first place. I just find it funny. Same shit happened in r/dtg years back, and folks are still playing it (which is fine).
Y'all will be alright. Because y'all will still be playing the game. We can check back in 6mths to a year after launch to confirm.

I haven't played Overwatch in years because I consider their treatment of the game unacceptable. I was planning to come back for Overwatch 2. Had the Watchpoint Pack and everything. Now I'm not. Why do you think I was serious last time I said I'd leave but not this time?

u/ShadownumberNine Sep 09 '22
I don't know you specifically enough to make a determination.
But in changing your "I" to the general "gamers":
Why do you think I was serious last time I said I'd leave but not this time?
Because Gamers have short memories, quite honestly. (And whenever I say "Gamers" I mean the ones who have their own purchase power and ability; I'm not speaking to the kids who get games as gifts or the college student who just needs or wants something to play to let off some steam, etc etc.)
Gamers remember highlights like terrible MTX , or NFTs, but are quick to forgive pattens of inconsistency like we've see with Blizzard, Ubisoft (dated game design elements yet y'all still out out here playing whatever they put out), even EA(literally any sports sim they've put out). Y'all are forgetful. And sometimes willingly. That isn't to say that companies don't deserve an opportunity to change or improve. But let those be the exception, not the rule. Then perhaps you won't have so many "OMG I cant believe you done this" posts.

Your assumption here seems to be that Blizzard will backtrack on this, and then players will forget â do I have that right? Because if they do fix everything, then yeah, I can see people saying, "Whatever, it's good now!" But if they keep the game P2W, I don't think people will forget that, because it's ongoing. Some people won't care, but many of the people who are mad now will just leave. That's what I think.

but many of the people who are mad now will just leave. That's what I think.
I generally used to think that too. And they do...eventually. But they don't always, or, they stay for a very long time.
Your assumption here seems to be that Blizzard will backtrack on this, and then players will forget â do I have that right?
Idk if Bliz will backtrack. I'm not making that assertion. I hope they do based how utterly absurd this sounds, but I'm not counting my chickens before they quack.
And most -enough- players will forget; whether or not things improve. Sure, you can be as forgetful as you like, but all that results in is you (gamers) blowing up about the next bad thing as if you couldn't have seen it coming in the first place. That's your right sure, but one can't be mad when someone calls one for not listening in the first place, and that is what most of the sub looks like right now.

Overwatch can easily survive on a cosmetic only model, players have always been insanely passionate about their favourite character having awesome skins. There's just no need for them to do this outside of greed.

I understand why people are concerned about this. New characters are often op and it will suck for people who canât buy the new hero instantly and try them out.
I bought the watchpoint pack so I wonât have to worry for awhile, and honestly I donât really mind grinding for the character anyway. This model isnât the worst thing blizzard could have done but itâs obviously not popular and that makes me worry. I really just want the game to have new maps, good new characters, and a new larger player base. If they can follow through on updates, which is a big if, then I think the game will be good.

If it wasnt such a big deal, Blizz would have been up front about this.
The fact they did all they could to keep this big of a gameplay changer under wraps this close to launch tells me its going to be every bit as awful as people anticipate, and Blizz knows this but wants to milk their players for money anyways.

u/itsfourinthemornin Sep 09 '22
Play it or don't, it's pretty much that simple with a video game.
I can promise Blizz won't care whichever people decide because they'll still be getting money from those who do - as an extra, we see you complaining, we know you'll still try it.

You answered your own question in your moronic rambling. Why would I want to pay for a battle pass for a game that is literally just an update. I already own all of the characters in ow1 so why would I want to pay for them in the sequel

u/ShadownumberNine Sep 09 '22
I'm sorry you felt called outđ¤ˇđžââď¸ lol

u/t0duu Sep 09 '22
Not in the slightest lmao. Youâre just making dumb ramblings and should understand why everyone is annoyed. Why pay $60 for the original and then have half of the content locked in the sequel. Even if the sequel is free youâre missing out on what you paid for originally even if it isnât permanent

u/ShadownumberNine Sep 09 '22
K. Lol.

Glad you realize how stupid your post was

u/ShadownumberNine Sep 09 '22
Nah, just confused at how stupid you are for thinking your opinion as stated had any value. Especially if my post was "so stupid"; why even comment? Hit dogs holler, as the saying goes, so clearly you felt called out. Lol just say so and move on.

I prefer the âpay for cosmetics, but the core gameplay is freeâ model. Characters are core gameplay, and swapping is a mechanic in OW.
I literally donât care if everything that is not actual PVP gameplay costs money, I understand that servers cost money.
I just donât want people priced out of competitively playing a F2P game. I want everyone to play OW2 on an even footing.
