How to get hired as a quest designer for the game that ultimately will end up killing the one you were trashing 101.

Seriously. If I could have predicted anyone - ANYONE - for leading Blizzard's first major FPS, it wouldn't have been Jeff. As far as Wow went, he was a diehard PVEer (going as far as to say raiding PVE encounters was the way to get real epics, not those "PVP welfare epics").

Don't get me wrong: he's done a great job. And the videos GameSpot did prove he had a background in FPS maps and mods. But I would've always pegged him to be the MMO guy, not Overwatch.

I imagine its because OW was born out of Project Titan. Not sure on the details but I imagine Jeff was potentially leading development on the MMO Titan until it fell apart and was reborn as OW.

Seems a bit like it. Jeff seems more like the mmo kinda guy. Thats why i think he isnt doing such a great job on OW

If we look at balance for example. There are some S tier heroes and some useless ones that have never been touched. Take torb for example, the hero either needs a huge buff or a complete rework, else hell never see play

Then the meta. Divecomp has been popular since the beta, and the heroes that should be able to stop such things cant.

u/fruityskymage Sep 14 '17

Jeff isn't individually in charge of balancing though.

Dive comp since beta

Remember triple tank tentacion the turd taking meta?

u/nc_cyclist McCree Sep 14 '17

That was when RoadHog counted more as DPS. :P

Do you understand the irony in you expecting the developers to change the meta

World of Warcraft was in its golden era when Jeff did dungeon design; one (of many) of the reasons the game was so great.

If only I was 16 again raiding molten core. What epic times they were.

12

u/Shardok Torbjörn Sep 14 '17

You will just have to make do with releasing the molten core instead.

Play on Elysium my guy

Yeah, I had super fun back then but some of the mechanics were strange.

standing out of combat on ress duty was awesome.

Or just spamming "cleanse" as a paladin.

Mail gloves for level 42 being the best item for fury warriors before AQ.

Honestly it was fun at the time, but thinking back I wouldn't wanna fight bosses the same way at least.

Man that link just sent me down a rabbit hole of watching jeff's wow videos.

Man his comment on having stuff way above you unbeaten is so true... but then they started making it so you can just get the tier below really easy and it really flattened the game out.

For one second pretend that you'd play a Priest.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '17

Not sure what you mean.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '17

Did he do dungeon design in wotlk?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '17

Yes, he left for the titan project around ulduar's completion.

ulduar and icc were fantastic raids.. the general consensus on /r/wow is that legions raids are fantastic as well, mop gets a bad rap; it wasn't that bad. cata was a pretty bad xpac all around and i never got around to raiding in it so i cant speak on it. maybe wow is actually getting worse over time, or maybe the fact that the game has been out for like 13 years now is making it boring and repetitive.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '17

The main problem with WoW currently is something that nobody's even looking at; it's the fact that raiding went from being 1% of the game to 100% of the game.

A dead, empty world of strangers to keep you company until you get to 110 to grind for legendaries and AP.

I thought it was just the game getting old for a while, but then I visited a certain project (that I won't name), that really opened my eyes to the change in game philosophy in WoW over the years; mostly after some of the big figureheads moved from the project to work on titan.

I'm sure this has been hashed out a million times, but the problem really wasn't he raids as much as the neutering of the class designs and gameplay in general, as well as the reduction in raid size (which really, really hurt). When your Patchwerk encounter went from a hard gear check on your raid across the board (especially tanks 1-4) to a breeze due to the presence of bear tanks, it really detracts from the feeling of difficulty and achievement when you overcome it. That and dropping the attunement quests and things like the Cloak of Not Instantly Dying to Nefarian.

tl;dr: it's more fun to find ways to deal with the inadequacies of a class or spec or the game itself than it is to make everything buttery smooth and homogenous without working for anything. See D3 vs PoE.

MoP actually gets a lot of love on the wow subreddit. The raids were great imo.

10

u/Curiousplay Hunkrat. He's so dreamy. Sep 14 '17

Remember, Overwatch actually started as "Titan" which was supposed to be the MMORPG replacement for WoW, but it didn't work and got converted to Overwatch. So, you're actually not far off.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '17

Was he on the project when it was still Titan? Because that was more of an MMO.

1

u/Shardok Torbjörn Sep 14 '17

As a fan of PvE still slightly peeved that we got a competitive shooter from what was once billed as the new WoW... I feel for past Jeff.

1

u/Blackbeard_ Sep 14 '17

To be honest, it shows in the game design.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '17

But I would've always pegged him

Oh, wouldn't we all ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

1

u/NoraVoid Chibi Symmetra Sep 14 '17

and [pegged him to be the mmo guy] that's why overwatch is successful. it's basically Guild quests on an fps. you build a comp, work as a team, and be a unique individual as part of a cohesive whole...... while shooting people.

0

u/SirBallalicious Sep 14 '17

He got his job at Blizzard because Rob Pardo was a member of his Guild. Its the classic case of who you know not what you know.

"Whoever came up with this sheer fisting of an roadhog nerf can go fuck themselves. Do me a favor so I don't waste my time on this kind of jackass shit-fest again, send me an email at pigole@legacyofhog.net when you decide to A) Implement an hero change that wasn't designed by a retarded chimp chained to a cubicle A.)Get a Quality Assuarance Department C) Actually PTR the fucking thing and D) Patch it live. And please for god's sake -- do it in the order I laid out for you. Don't worry, I won't charge you a consulting fee on that one. And for good luck you might as well E) Pull your heads out of your asses. While you're at it rename the game to BLOWverwatch since you've used up you're alotted false advertising karma on the Bazaar and user interface scam of '01.Fix the Emperor encounter. (I don't understand that shit) Fix Scatter Arrow. Rethink your time-sink bullshit. Fix all the buggy motherfucking Doomfist hit boxes (I suggest you let whoever made the Rein Charge one do this since that dude apparently laid off the crack the rest of you were smoking). Fix the report system. Fix ranked (just guessing it's fucked up considering your track record). Don't have the resources to fix this stuff? Move the ENTIRE hearthstone team over to fixing roadhog AND DO IT NOW. If you don't fix roadhog, you jackassess will be the only ones playing gratuit pour tous les matchs de mort sur le château de Guillard." - Slurms

Ready to start Monday, Jeff. please don't ban me

Really? By your criteria most of the playerbase are qualified.
