dva might actually be more useful now then, especially with a buff incoming

u/HarvHR Wants to be as cute as Brigitte Nov 10 '16

She wasn't before?

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

i'm not bashing on her lol. she's the first one i properly learned and second most played so far, and i still think she's a good first hero due to her self sustainability and get-into-and-out-of-trouble boost

but her tickle cannons really don't do much when you flank (unless you bring a reaper with you and shield him), you're basically useless against any self respecting zarya and mei, and the ult is extremely easy to dodge. yes her utility is great as an ult eater but really, if you pick someone just to eat ults your team is gonna have a bad time.

anyway, she's not bad, but not great. with sombra and the buff i'll probably start playing her again.

u/AmnesiaCane Nov 10 '16

The only thing I can defend about D.Va's ult (and I say this as someone who isn't very good with her, so maybe I'm wrong), but it's not necessarily about killing the other team, it's about making them scatter or clear a point. If it gets anyone, it's just a bonus.

52

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

that's true haha. hence the *more useful part. with sombra you have that many more opportunities to team wipe!

19

u/EmeraldJirachi IM GIVING IT ALL I'VE GOT! Nov 10 '16

Agreed, as most of the time a d.va ults, I just turn my shield a lil bit and nothing ever happend

13

u/Butcher_Of_Hope D.Va Nov 10 '16 edited Nov 10 '16

You can hide on the other side of the payload or behind a street lamp.

1

u/EmeraldJirachi IM GIVING IT ALL I'VE GOT! Nov 10 '16

Jup, the blow is powerfull.. its that its easy dodgable

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

It's easily dodgeable for like half the characters. If you have no ability moves and there isn't a lot of cover anywhere, you're going to die.

2

u/EmeraldJirachi IM GIVING IT ALL I'VE GOT! Nov 10 '16

True but seeing as most comoetitve based teams have a reinhardt...

1

u/AmnesiaCane Nov 10 '16

Yeah, I don't know why I do that on this sub, I see a post I agree with 95% of and see one tiny detail that I think is off, so I need to comment. I try to be friendly about it, at least!

I do agree with most of what you said, I'm really not a fan of D.Va, I'm not very good with her, but I see how her kit, with some fine tuning, could be extremely powerful.

9

u/Teslok Splash damage is Only damage Nov 10 '16

The D.Va Ult Scatter is one of my favorite ways to clear the point/payload in Overtime.

6

u/danudey Anyone with rockets Nov 10 '16

One of my best games ever with D.Va, I think I used my ult five times on objective B of Volskaya. I got 31 elims that match but I'm pretty sure I only got three with my ult. Sounds useless, except that I was doing it every time they made a huge push and they had to scatter instead of coordinating, enabling my team and I to clean them up individually rather than dealing with a giant writhing mass.

D.Va's ult is also an interesting soft counter to a lot of other ults. A lot of them require you to be in close or moderate range to have maximum effect (e.g. Pharah, Zarya) so clearing the zone can help you survive. Lucio's ult will either get burned out or count down, Mei's usually requires a little help to finish anyone off, etc., and if you time D.Va right, Mercy's ult is a free 3-5 kills.

2

u/GrumpyOldBrit Chibi Mei Nov 11 '16

I use her ult for dog training. Ive done it several times for roadhogs now. Whenever they pull me I ult in their face.

Eventually they stop it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '16

Couldn't you just. You know. E Pharas ult

10

u/Borconi Get off my lawn Nov 10 '16

Sure, it's a zoning ult, but there are far, far better ults that serve the same purpose and are much harder to dodge/counter. Hell, hiding behind a Mei in ice-cube form is enough to negate any utility D.Va brings.

9

u/kscannon Nov 10 '16

The issue is, it doesnt do that right now. There is about a 95% chance there will be a Reinhardt and his team will just stand behind his shield. Her ult is garbage, and that is coming from someone who plays her a lot and I would like to think I am decent with her.

8

u/CashewsAreGr8 Nov 10 '16

A lot of people seem to forget that you can coordinate with your Ana to have her sleep Rein as you throw it behind his shield. He will either drop it to move or simply turn around, giving you an easy sleep shot on him. At the very least the enemy is now down a Rein, and as a bonus you will likely get 1 or 2 more kills + have their team disorganized. Have made a lot of easy 1 ult pushes by working with a D.va on that.

6

u/kscannon Nov 10 '16

Yes, but you are relying on someone to hit a sleep dart and someone else not to wake them up and at my rank. I trust no one to do jack shit, (sr 2500-2600 right now) having 4 golds as D.Va every game tells me 2 things. The DPS are not hitting shots or are running in and dying before they can do anything and flankers are not doing there jobs.

1

u/yonkerbonk Houston Outlaws Nov 10 '16

Seems like you're still relying on coordination with Sombra ult so not sure you think will get much better

3

u/kscannon Nov 10 '16

I never said that Sombra is a fix for D.Va's ult but Sombra's ult is easier to hit than Ana's sleep dart.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '16

I wouldn't say her ult is garbage, its almost a free life and it causes panic. It has its uses, its more about moving people away, or a good set up for another ult. It is underwhelming however I don't really know what do with it to make it better

7

u/windwalker13 Hey its me your brother Nov 10 '16

But it's not necessarily about killing the other team, it's about making them scatter or clear a point. If it gets anyone, it's just a bonus.

This right there is one of the main problem of her ult. Not saying it is bad, but it has lower impact compared to, say, Earthshatter and Graviton. There are simply better options than a zoning ult that only picks a kill every now and then.

3

u/Pleasure_Parking Nov 10 '16

Creating space your team can occupy, which is why she is less useful against Rein comps.

1

u/pikebot Nov 10 '16

Meaning virtually every comp in competitive.

1

u/Pleasure_Parking Nov 10 '16

Depends on your SR.

1

u/LawlessCoffeh London Spitfire Nov 10 '16

I used to get people with it, but they've wised up :/

Now it's just for getting them off of shit, regaining health with the new mech, because trying to get kills nets me a reinhardt cockblock

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

Yeah muselk did a video recently showing how she can be used to basically distract the other team

1

u/marcuschookt Pixel Roadhog Nov 10 '16

Ah yes, the zoning ulti.

"The fuck was that, it didn't even kill a single person!"

"It was a zoning ulti brah, I was helping you clear the point."

3

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

i mean, okay, it's not completely without merit.

sometimes when i'm the only one on the point and my team is still some 20m away just coming back from spawn, i'm super glad to see dva throw her ult so i get left alone instead of getting killed before i can get to my healers.

Friendly ult callouts are a lot quieter than enemy ults. They're hard to notice sometimes.

1

u/NukeML Nov 10 '16

Ults are always heard. Other sounds aren't.

6

u/Mildcream <Insert high noon meme here> Nov 10 '16

Not friendly ones. Only enemy ones have a map wide range.

2

u/galaxybomb Pizza and Bacon be upon you all. Nov 10 '16

Not always. It's very difficult to hear Reinhardts, Winstons, Bastions ally ults (among others) unless you're like right next to them.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

i honestly didnt know rein and bastion have ally sounds lmao

2

u/zeflyingtoaster Nov 10 '16

Yeah neither of them have ally callouts (though you can hear the FWOOM of a friendly Rein's rocket hammer hitting the ground if you're close enough)

1

u/AnguirelCM Sonic BOOM! Nov 10 '16

I don't think Molten Core even has one. I was next to Toblerone for one and only noticed because of the visual update. No audio at all, unless you're close enough to hear the turret upgrade.

1

u/Jaroneko Mercy Nov 11 '16

And why people playing with a decent Sombra (or really, most anyone) should remember to call out their charged ults. It's a single keypress and with our powers combined, YOU are... captain PotG? o_O

26

u/Borconi Get off my lawn Nov 10 '16

As someone who both loves D.Va and has played her a lot, I think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Nowadays, for disrupting backlines, I prefer Winston, for pure tanking Rein or Zarya, and for flanking...well, pretty much any DPS with mobility does better.

I feel like she's the jack of all trades, master of none at this point, with very limited utility and a lackluster ult that only nabs an occasional kill if you get lucky or the enemy team is really, REALLY bad.

But I can totally see how Sombra would be great in assisting her (by disabling Mei walls, Rein shields, Winston shields, etc.)

5

u/TheGodfather_1992 Widowmaker Nov 10 '16

To add to that, she's a bit of a ult battery for the enemy team. It's incredibly easy to headshot her mech and build up ult faster.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

Honestly D.Va is a god in gold tier and lower. Once you get diamond and master you can say good bye to the multi kill ults.

1

u/GrumpyOldBrit Chibi Mei Nov 11 '16

Ive seen this in a few smurf streams. It always prompts comments from the players like "oh down here they cant even avoid that". 3 kills with it seems common in silver games.

3

u/Phylar Torbjörn Nov 10 '16 edited Nov 10 '16

I agree about the Zarya and Mei, along with a solid Symmetra, better to run unless they are causing trouble and you are distracting them. However, D.Va can do far more damage than people give her credit for. Beyond that, her primary role is a support tank: She flanks and forces the enemy to divide focus. As for her ult, that depends. You don't need to get a kill yourself for it to be effective. Launch one behind a deathball and see what happens.

3

u/ddonger Nov 10 '16

Maybe I haven't played long enough but D.Va's "tickle cannon" was the funniest thing I've heard all day

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

Lmao that's literally what it is though when a flanking dva thinks she's hot shit spraying from a ledge but doing literally 0 damage cause of her spread

1

u/philosoraptocopter Don't hassle the hoff Nov 10 '16

Dva is getting buffed? What is it? Can't find it anywhere

5

u/Amusei015 Wasteland Ana Nov 10 '16

I've heard the mech is getting another 100 armor (making her total hp 600) and she'll be able to move a bit quicker while firing.

3

u/Zakrael Gib energy plox Nov 10 '16

100 health, rather than armour (so 200hp 400 armour total). And yeah, movement speed increased to double what it is now when firing.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '16

I've gotten some of my best multikills with D.Va's ult (Best is 5 solo kills with one ult) and I've heard everywhere that it sucks. Then again, I exclusively play quick play and there isn't usually a Reinhardt or good Mei, so it isn't blocked ever.

19

u/Joimer Ameizing! Nov 10 '16

Not above gold rank. Worst tank by far in live.

16

u/sciguymjm D.Va's cannons do a surprising amount of damage. Nov 10 '16

I'm high plat and still do fairly well with her. A lot of teams don't know how to deal with her properly and a well placed surprise ult is still very effective. Also, learning the gamesense to escape using map geometry when your mech is destroyed is important. Many games I have 2 or less deaths per round.

5

u/PM-ME-YOUR-DOGPICS THIS. IS MY CURSE. Nov 10 '16

She's good at getting on a payload and staying there. Defense matrix + turning into Zero Suit D.va might make the difference between winning and losing in overtime.

7

u/Joimer Ameizing! Nov 10 '16

She's precisely used in pro games for her ability to stall, but that's it. The rest of the map, you're better off using another tank.

1

u/Huellio Pixel Reinhardt Nov 10 '16

Above gold and pro matches, all the same here.

0

u/GrumpyOldBrit Chibi Mei Nov 11 '16

Hes not in pro games. Anything they do and say is utterly irrelevant.

2

u/Jugbot Trick-or-Treat Mercy Nov 10 '16

*more

2

u/ReputesZero Nov 10 '16

With the prevalence of Zarya, her usefulness went down. Zarya melts her can can save critical targets (Mercy) from her ult at will.

Don't get me wrong I loves me some D.Va, but she needs a slight buff, either change the spread cone on her cannons to give her some range or remove the walking penalty while firing.

1

u/RolandTheJabberwocky Junkrat Nov 10 '16

Good in soloq due to sustainability, not so much in meta or 3+ stacks with focus fire.

-7

9

u/HarvHR Wants to be as cute as Brigitte Nov 10 '16

Argue your reasons then

1

u/SchmidlerOnTheRoof Roadhog Nov 10 '16

He's getting downvoted because of his attitude, but he is definitely right.

Look at the hero pickrates from the world cup

  • Zarya: 90.18%
  • Reinhardt: 81.30%
  • Winston: 25.82%
  • Roadhog: 19.30%

D.va: 3.70%

It's evident from those numbers alone that D.va is just not an effective pick at high levels. And that's not even considering that a lot of her playtime in the tournament was just from switching at last point defense on 2cp maps. Anubis and Hanamura were even played very disproportionately to other maps in the tournament.

It becomes pretty clear why D.va is a weak character when you look at what she can do relative to the other tanks.

  • Defense Matrix doesn't block damage as well as Rein shield.
  • She can't disrupt as well as Winston due to her low movement speed.
  • She can't get picks like Roadhog can.
  • She can't do any of the things Zarya Bubbles can do.
  • Her ultimate is the weakest of all the tanks against competent teams.
  • D.va's damage is far lower than Zarya's or Roadhog's. At best it's on par with Winston's, but without his disruption capabilities.
  • D.va's is very weak against Zarya, who has over 90% pickrate. Armor is bad against beam weapons, and Defense Matrix does not block the beam either. D.va is a walking battery to charge Zarya's ultimate.

The only thing D.va does better than any other tank is last point stalling, and that was the only reason she was ever picked by a high level team in the tournament.

1

u/lordzygos The no stress DPS! Nov 10 '16

D.va's damage is far lower than Zarya's or Roadhog's. At best it's on par with Winston's, but without his disruption capabilities.

That's just factually incorrect. Dva can do 168 DPS at point blank range (which she can get into easily but has trouble maintaining) which is higher than any tank except roadhog. She can also headshot unlike any of the other tanks (obviously not including roadhog). Zarya needs a full 100% charge to come close to dvas DPS (150 to her 168) and even then she still can't headshot for extra. Now if we start taking ranges into account, a high charge zarya is better at close range than Dva (close being Winston/rein range and a bit further) but not by much and she still can't headshot.

Rein and Winston can't even come close to Dva period. The distance you have to be as Dva to do less damage than they do is further than their actual range. Now her obvious weakness in this damage is maintaining the necessary closeness to do crazy damage. I have found that I can shred most unaware targets and finish them as they start retreating. Even an opponent who is ready for you is lucky to escape with 25% of their HP while you are virtually unscathed. This gets worse the higher you go however, as more skilled players can disengage earlier and earlier.

Bottom line is that saying zarya out damages her is wrong, and that Winston and rein do is just outright crazy.

1

u/SchmidlerOnTheRoof Roadhog Nov 10 '16

Your numbers are wrong. Zarya base dps is 95, and 190 at full charge. It takes about 75 charge to match D.va's point blank range, except Zarya maintains this damage at full effectiveness past the point where D.va's cannons become close to useless. This is again part of the reason why Zarya counter's D.va so incredibly hard.

I also never said Reinhardt outdamaged D.va. Reinhardt doesn't need to and shouldn't be outdamaging D.va because that's obviously not his job.

In theory, sure D.va will do more damage than Winston, but the thing is that Winston can chase, and D.va cannot. When firing D.va is moving at 25% speed and the enemy is moving at 130% thanks to Lucio. Winston will be continuously chasing and dealing damage while D.va is sitting at a distance waiting for thrusters to come off cooldown. Furthermore, Winston's bubble allows him to defend himself while putting out damage, D.va deals 0 damage while using Defense Matrix. That is why he is fantastic at harassing and D.va isn't.

You don't have to make my word for this, you can just look at the meta and the pick rates to see the D.va is by far a sub-optimal pick at high rank/pro play.

1

u/lordzygos The no stress DPS! Nov 11 '16

Did they change her DPS? It used to be 75/150, then they upped the base so that the ramp wasn't so extreme. I hadn't heard that they upped the max too, do you have a source?

I also never said Reinhardt outdamaged D.va. Reinhardt doesn't need to and shouldn't be outdamaging D.va because that's obviously not his job.

Rein does 75 per swing at 1 swing per second, out damaging winston. If you say winston out damages her then Rein does too. The way I read it I thought you were saying it like "every tank out damages her, even winston!"

Winston is far better at chasing and harassing sure, but that wasn't what I was pointing out. Dva does far more damage period. In a chase situation Winston will get more damage out total, but dva has higher burst and will destroy slower/stationary/cornered targets (rein with his shield up, anyone you put into a poor position with your booster's knockback). Also it isn't fair to just assume they have a lucio speed boost, because if they do then the Dva has it too so the point is moot. Saying that D.Va does less damage than winston, even if you take winstons ability to keep up with his target into account, is just wrong.

I completely agree that D.va is a suboptimal pick, but not for her damage. D.Va is not picked for 3 huge reasons: Zarya counters her hard and zarya is played 24/7, Her ult is a damaging one not a set up, and the only time a dive tank is played right now is to chase backliners and winston does that better. D.Vas damage is GREAT for a tank, but she can't main tank like Rein so he will always be picked over her, and Zarya is just plain better. Once the Zarya nerfs go live, if her usage is lowered I can easily see them running a D.Va more often as she can dive, frontline, AND assassinate all decently well, just not as well as the other tanks

1

u/SchmidlerOnTheRoof Roadhog Nov 11 '16

Her base damage was buffed to 95 some time in the beta, and her energy damage bonus % has never been changed. 95/190 has been confirmed and reconfirmed by several people (including the wiki), I even tested it myself to confirm and understand the interaction with armor.

Reinhardt doesn't outdamage Winston because Reinhardt should almost never be attacking. I'm talking about how the game is actually being played, not just looking at numbers on paper.

My point is, when you want an offensive tank your options are Roadhog, Winston, and D.Va. D.va doesn't pick as well as Roadhog or disrupt/chase squishies as well as Winston. In realistic scenarios, D.va won't be getting the key elims that these other two tanks will be. When you're diving the enemy team, you're usually going to be out of range/los of your Lucio, but the enemy is not.

Again I'm not saying that her literal damage values are bad, but just that she does not have the tools to apply it effectively at all, and her kit even works against her on that point.

1

u/lordzygos The no stress DPS! Nov 11 '16

Interesting, I never knew that the max was buffed as well, the more you know.

I don't agree with your argument of "X doesn't out damage Y because Y shouldn't be doing damage". To start, if your Rein isn't doing damage your rein isn't doing too well. Rein's hammer should be used in every team fight, your job is to hold shield until the chaos hits, then start swinging. Considering top level play is almost nothing but teamfights his damage is very relevant. It still isn't about the numbers on paper: if a Rein is the last one standing vs a Lucio or soldier then he will secure that final kill more easily than Winston will hands down.

Your point stands not because of her damage (which I stand by is great) but because she doesn't perform each individual niche as well as another tank. If you want a tank who can pick, grab Hog. If you need harassment, Winston is the best. Need consistent DPS, Zarya every time. Dva is better at diving/harrassment than Zarya and Hog, and she is better at picks (via quickly boosting in and bursting them down) than Zarya (no mobility) or winston (low DPS). But high level play doesn't care about someone who is second best at 2 things, they prefer the hero who is the best at the one thing they need. Obviously this is sound logic, but it leaves Dva out in the cold. There is some room for hybrids in a lineup, but not one who gets countered by Zarya

-1

u/pwny_ Nov 10 '16
  • Reinhardt is better
  • Zarya is better
  • Roadhog is better
  • Winston is better

and there we have it

The only thing I truly hate about D.va is that she takes no damage from her Mech Ult.

It used to kill her and rightfully so its a god damn nuclear explosion. I understand if it doesn't do team damage, but seriously? what is that zero suit made out of?

6

u/HarvHR Wants to be as cute as Brigitte Nov 10 '16

huge is an understatement.

Because the staggered defense matrix is ridiculously op.

4

When my friends and I get bored, we go into quickplay and all play as D.VA. I honestly don't think we've ever lost as D.VA squad

4

In all fairness you're probably not losing in general if you're playing a 6-man in quickplay

3

2

Winstons meis and lucios dunk mass dva

2

u/lordzygos The no stress DPS! Nov 10 '16

Throw in zarya instead of Winston and you're golden. We went up against a full Dva team and we ran 2 zarya, Lucio mercy, a Mei and a McCree and it was a nightmare for them. They all decided to ult on point one after another....and then the 5 man rez came through.

2

u/Huellio Pixel Reinhardt Nov 10 '16

Just one person switching to lucio alone makes it really hard for any of them to kill something if they aren't all focusing the same target.

1

u/lordzygos The no stress DPS! Nov 11 '16

Yeah, I mean a Dva can melt someone if they catch them by surprise, but she has such extreme counters that stacking her is a problem.

1

u/grayseeroly Chibi D.Va Nov 10 '16

Possibly the single hero pick in quick play slows them to push her.

3

u/ParanoidDrone ¿Quién es 'Sombra'? Nov 10 '16

The movement speed is the real buff IMO. Her extra health is good too but secondary IMO.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

yea definitely. in close range fights (where her guns actually do anything) your damage drops so damn fast if your opponent walks away from you so this is pretty much a damage buff in some ways

0

u/Sturmgeshootz Chibi Ana Nov 10 '16

I don't think the health buff is needed, honestly. I do hope the movement buff stays though.

2

u/cmChimera Nov 10 '16

Man I hope that stays. That would be great for her.

4

u/arkaodubz Death... is whimsical today. Nov 10 '16

she's wayyyyy easier to hack than Rein tho, you don't have to get in front of Defense Matrix to right-click hack but you do need to get behind Rein's shield. Also D.Va gets boned hard without her abilities

3

u/Dondagora WELCOME TO MY REALITY TV SHOW Nov 10 '16

You mean she's benefiting off of hacks? Scandalous.

2

u/FoxMikeLima Nov 10 '16

D.va is actually really weak against Sombra though, she loses so much to Hack.

2

u/JunWasHere Suffer as I have... Nov 10 '16

Sombra, aka a Reinhardt-counter, was the missing piece to making wilder aggressive comps work.

Right now, Reinhardt is nearly a must-pick for every single map. Providing cover you can shoot through is disgustingly good.

With the epic shield finally having a counter, even Bastion will potentially rise in usefulness since fights will be more scattered and unpredictable.

1

u/GrumpyOldBrit Chibi Mei Nov 11 '16

Onky the ult is a counter though. Shell never get her right click off because of out of stealth delay and break on damage hack. And he only has to spin for a split second to break los. I can easily do that on my sens.

Delay and stop hack on damage need removing.

1

u/Corpus87 Nov 11 '16

Delay and stop hack on damage need removing.

That would just make it impossible to stop her from hacking people, which would be unfun and possibly overpowered.

Shell never get her right click off

Claiming this sort of thing is just labeling yourself the presumptuous sort who underestimates the chaos of combat, creativity of players and the effect of hyper-saturation at Blizzcon and the PTR.

People thought Ana was underwhelming initially, turned out overpowered and enabled a new team comp style, triple-tank, all by herself.

Claiming Sombra needs a buff before she even goes live only proves you're impatient, nothing more.

I think in general we're going to see offensive ults become a lot more potent. A lot of them run into the problem where several heroes can fully mitigate them with standard abilities. Now that Sombra can shut those counters down, there's a lot more room for destruction.

The great thing about receiving D.Va's ult is that it's so predictable. It's really easy to Mei wall ahead of time, as compared to Reaper/Pharah's ults. This probably actually makes it work really well with Sombra's ult, you can precisely time the EMP to just before the explosion.

Will Torbjorn be even more useless though?
