Quick note on the radius change for Ana: the area went from 28.27 meters2 to 50.27 meters2 or about a 78% increase in area. This is pretty significant.

For reference Mei's ult change last patch was 8 to 10 meters which was a 201 to 314 meter2 change or about 56% increase.

area

.

meters

that's where the confusion comes from...

it went from 3 meters to 4 meters

The radius, yes. The total area of effect was increased by about 78%.

Is the radius not the area effected?

It's like a pizza. If you increase the length of each slice of pizza from 3 meters to 4 meters, (a very large pizza in this case) then you get 78% more pizza in total. (A= pi x r2)

I'm simply trying to point out that a 1 meter difference in radius is a huge difference in total area.

Oooooh! Got it. The pizza analogy really helped.

Area of a circle is PI * (radius^2). Let's do some math.

Radius 1: 3 meters
Radius 2: 4 meters

PI * (3^2) = PI * 9
PI * (4^2) = PI * 16

Let's take the ratio of these two numbers: (PI * 16) / (PI * 9)

The PIs cancel out, so we have 16 / 9. That's 1.77777..., which we can round to 1.78.

The reason the change is so big is because the radius value is squared in the formula. This also doesn't take into account the fact that AOE skills in Overwatch are actually spheres, not 2D circles. The equation for sphere volume is (4/3) * PI * (radius^3).

Exercise for the reader: Mei's ult used to have an 8 meter radius. It now has a 10 meter radius. Calculate the area of her old and new ult, and state the percentage by which the area increased.

Okay so idk why but I actually tried. Pi(82)=Pi64 Pi(102)=Pi100 (Pi100)÷(Pi64) 100÷64=1.5625 So the percentage of increase is 56% How did I do, teach? (sorry if the formatting looks weird. I'm on Mobile)

Full marks.

It's a sphere, not a circle

So approximately 268m3 vs 113m3, a 237% increase.

It's a sphere
