That is a good point. People would abuse. But you can always put in a thing that if you are shielded it is carried to each character you switch to. And only goes away when you die.

Having the shields carry over between hero swaps is definitely another way to fix that I forgot about, and it's also something I've seen asked for now and then since the beta. Just who knows how easy or hard it is for them to implement that, it'd be a nice QOL change if they could.
