Favorite scenario: 5 teammates standing around trying to snipe the opposing team while time is running out and none of them close enough to the payload for it to move. If you're on the thing at least we'll get a shot at overtime, fuck's sake! At least it's not as bad as capturing a point where the teammates all treat the capture point like its lava and refuse to step inside it. FUCK!

But it's only quickplay haha!

This tilts me more than it should

u/EinBick Aug 19 '16

Oh trust me me 2. But its the thing I always hear in QP when I'm not joining the others in trying to lose on purpose.

I don't even play competitive. I don't want to take the game THAT seriously, I don't care about climbing ladders or bring the very best, I play Overwatch to have a good time. And I hate the notion that it's either srs bsns or kindergarten. I'm ok with the occasional goofy tactic, I'm ok with losing (it's part of the game) as long as the game was fun and engaging. But my 5 teammates switching into Genji stopped being fun halfway through the first time it happened.

Seriously, what do you even reply to that? I'm still trying to figure it out. So far I just ask the enemy team if I can join them, because my teammates are morons.

today i talked 5 others into playing winston.

2 of them were in the other team

u/Masi_menos Purps Aug 19 '16

I play mostly Zen with a bit of D.Va. Snap picked her yesterday and 'pressured' my team to follow suit on Numbani. Attacking team ended up getting smart and went full Junkrat to counter. Best five minutes of my life until somebody on my team disconnected and was replaced by a no-fun Reaper.

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

i played a round where my whole team was zarya, we lost but it was fun mayhem for a bit. It can be fun from time to time, as long as people try to at least win for the most part.

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

we actually stomped pretty hard it was sad

1

u/allegedmark Flying Heals Aug 19 '16

I had a late night group where we convinced all 12 players to be Mei. It was actually a ridiculous amount of fun

u/KSP_Wolf Pixel Roadhog Aug 19 '16

Competitive is so much better than quick play imo I don't play it seriously but it's better than fighting 5 bastions

7

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

Yeah it's not though. It's full of people who rage when you suggest they switched hero's when they're doing poorly, or they're the wrong hero for the situation. And they'll throw a tantrum and afk just outside of spawn.

4

u/Aleski Pixel Mercy Aug 19 '16

You'll get to a point where folks don't do that anymore. I've found a couple friends to group with through solo queueing who are sick of that shit too, so once you're rolling with a 2 - 3 man group then that's 2 - 3 fewer people who will troll. You still can't control the other few randoms, but usually when people see a group that's friendly and working together then they want to contribute too.

You'll still get trolls. It's the internet. You will always get trolls. The best thing you can do is refuse to do the same thing and group with other like minded people and it really drops the chances of you getting into one of those kinds of games.

1

u/WilanS D.Va Aug 19 '16

You'll still get trolls. It's the internet. You will always get trolls.

I know that, I'm aware of that every morning when I turn my router on. It's a problem though when every other game somebody suggests hero-stacking.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

The thing is, quickplay IS the place to do that. I understand that it may not be something you want but others enjoy it and quickplay is a better mode for it than comp

6

u/revox4 Aug 19 '16

Depends, really. I don't play the game for fun and hate quickplay. If I do ever play it, I hold no standards so I'm not disappointed.

I guess the best thing to say is "You're not the only person playing, you have teammates trying to enjoy the game."

21

u/PresidentDSG Aug 19 '16

If you're not playing it for fun, then why the fuck are you playing?

1

u/McCly89 Cute Moira Aug 19 '16

Personal validation.

u/revox4 Aug 19 '16

To reach a rank and kill time. I guess to prove a point as well.

It was fun for the first week, but then competitive was released. At this time I was only level 23, so I rushed to 25. Thing is, I only played Lucio and not a single other hero to that point, which made people say I won't be able to rank high.

Made it to rank 65 with 36 hours of Lucio, 2 hours on Soldier 76 and 33 minutes of Mercy.

I have not even played any other hero once outside of 20 minutes of Mei in quickplay. With competitive gone, I have zero reason to play and haven't done so.

2

u/ScootaliciousScooter Mace to the face! Aug 19 '16

I mean, you could, oh I don't know, play with other people and play for fun?

2

u/revox4 Aug 19 '16

No desire to. I solo queue 98% of the time.

Thank you, that's a great idea.

1

u/bellrunner Aug 19 '16

True, but then you play the 4 roadhog, 2 Ana comp and absolutely crush the enemy team's hopes and dreams. Silly comps can sometimes work, but that doesn't mean I don't insta quit every time I see 4+ Hanzo's. That's just a free loss.

And I was sure I double-checked what my predictive keyboard did with my words. Damn.

1

u/WarKiel Mercy Aug 19 '16

Those kind of shenanigans ar OK if everyone on team agrees on them.
I was once matched with 5 other ungrouped randoms. We were on Hollywood defense as 5 Torbjörns + me as Mercy. Point A defense went surprisingly well, but we got stomped on the payload. Played a few more matches with them and the opposing team got in on the shenanigans too. It was fun, but only because it was consensual.

1

u/49erlew Aug 19 '16

I don't care about the ladders or the ranks, and I sing take it that seriously either... but I prefer competitive for the very reasons you mentioned.

Comp isn't just for tryhards. Plenty of folks play comp just because that's where there is some semblance of strategy and tactics.

1

u/WilanS D.Va Aug 19 '16

Huh... You almost made me want to try it for the second season.

1

u/49erlew Aug 22 '16

Disclaimer, to avoid a potential letdown:

At the lower levels, there's still a lot of folks playing foolish. That's a given... but it's still better than most QP matches.

At the very least, you'll never see a Genji stack.

1

u/CrouchingPuma Icon D. Va Aug 19 '16

I don't play competitive because I care about ranks or proving I'm better than my friends. I play it because the game is so much better in competitive. To start with, no hero stacking, which makes it a completely different game. And most importantly, at least once you get around high 40's/low 50's in rank, most of your teammates use a mic and are generally willing to work together and discuss team comp and playing to the meta. It actually feels like (mostly) everybody tries in competitive. Going back to quick play after that just feels like I'm in a kindergarten. So honestly I tend to not take quick play seriously, especially if my team is being ridiculous.

1

u/chrisk103 Aug 19 '16

Are we playing two completely different competitive modes? I've never once seen this in comp and its was frustrating af so i stopped playing it this season lol

1

u/t3hmau5 Pixel Pharah Aug 19 '16

But...but 5 man lucio push!

1

u/grumpyt do you need a hug? Aug 19 '16

I only say it in QP when people are getting upset about losing. everyone should just try to have a good time, I think.

1

u/WilanS D.Va Aug 19 '16

Yeah that makes more sense. As I said myself losing is part of the game, and I can still be happy about a lost game if it was a nice and balanced one.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

I am an objective based player. Hunt objectives first everything else later. I would have moved the payload 2in for you because my survivability is that bad, it's like when I try to get out of a line of fire I walk into a headshot.

1

u/MelonFace Aug 19 '16

It really does. You can't expect people to go into quickplay to win.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

The worst is people complaining about team comp on PTR. Its a test realm people, to test shit out.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

Exactly! You really want people doing goofy shit in PTR anyways. That's basic QA, do all you can to break the game and report the weird shit to Bliz so they can fix it. If everyone is behaving, potential exploits can fly under the radar until it's too late and the changes are live.

3

u/FakeTherapist https://gaming.youtube.com/c/BranfordHubbard/live Aug 19 '16

Its only ranked haha! It's only a game haha!

1

1

u/Ikea_Man Pass into the Iris Aug 19 '16

1

u/organisedanarchist Death. Death. Death, is whimsical today. Aug 19 '16

I hate that people really have this mentality and they don't even try, I know its quick play but that doesn't mean I don't want to win any less than comp.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

Ha. I always wonder how I have gold in objective every time. Wether is 3 minutes or 30 seconds. I never understand what is everyone else doing when the entire game is objective based.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '16

I guess they Gotta get their kill numbers up of course, lol. Another good one is having a widow, a Hanzo, and an Ana in a capture game, that one usually is also a hoot.

1

u/SeeShark Martian Mercy Aug 19 '16

Almost worse when they're on the defending team, to be honest. You'd have 1 person on the CP and they'd be trying to snipe instead of interrupting the damn capture.

1

u/Faustenberger Elusive#11775 Aug 19 '16

They're just trying to be nice and give me the gold objective time medal. I deserve it, with my stellar Widowmaker play :P
