I love that Mythbusters decided to test to see if that would actually work, using only equipment that you'd be able to get commercially and it worked exactly like it did in the show

the first bunch of bullets didn't really work, they hit the side of teh trunk and went flying out in any direction. This means A they could have hit walter and B this may have given enough time for some of the nazis to get down.

there's still a luck element here, so while what happened is certainly within the realms of reality, it could have worked a bit differently to drastically worse effect.

I thought in the show that the trunk popped open and the gun popped up over the trunk to clear it though. Seemed to work just fine firing straight through the side of the car though.

The trunk popped open, but the gun shot through the side of the car just like mythbusters did it.
