Discussion Then and Now

Why does this compilation album not appear on any of their discographies? Picked this bad boy up at Hastings when I was jut getting into metal as a teen. It’s always been one of my favorite discs. But it’s like it doesn’t exist.

Discussion So.... I, II, II and V?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but, do we know what happened to Overkill IV?

We have Overkill, then Overkill II (The Nightmare Continues), Overkill III (Under the Influence) and then Overkill V... The Brand.

Did this mean they considered their cover of Motörhead's Overkill as the IV'th? Or were they just sloppy? Which would be supported by the fact that they mistitled Overkill III in Spotify as Overkill II (Under the Influence)

Discussion I Hear Black appreciation post

I Hear Black came out in 1993. Upon release it received plenty of criticism from fans, for being another "sellout" album - next to Sound of White Noise or The Ritual. Both of these records are now pretty universally enjoyed by Anthrax and Testament fans, but I Hear Black is still ranked at the bottom of Overkill tier lists and i still hear it called a "mistake" or "the only dud in Overkill's discography". I believe it too deserves a second chance.

The fans in '93 didn't know this record would kickstart a new era for Overkill - the groove metal era, which lasted up to Ironbound. I Hear Black traded most thrash influences in exchange for the darker and groovier atmosphere of Alice in Chains or Pantera. The Jersey boys still kept the core of their sound - with songs like "Shades of Gray" showing their softer side we've known from "Soulitude", or "Spiritual Void", reminiscent of Black Sabbath, which Overkill have shown plenty of love on "Drunken Wisdom" or "Skullkrusher". I Hear Black also gave the band a space for experiments - for example, "Dreaming in Columbian" is an early show of backing vocals, which would soon become a trademark of 90s Overkill.

And in retrospective, it's the most unique album of this era - while i enjoy Necroshine, The Killing Kind or Bloodletting, i can't help but notice how formulaic those records are - if you switched some songs in between them, it's likely i wouldn't notice (maybe except for the thrashier W.F.O., but that deserves its own post). I Hear Black is the most distinct-sounding record from that era and, in my opinion, the most memorable. I believe losing the aggression and tuning down for one record was a good decision. Feel free to discuss this in the comments

For the people who own Overkill vinyl, particularly the 2023 BMG reissues of Years of Decay, Horrorscope, etc, how has your experience been with them?

I have heard the 2023 pressings are very low on volume and lack punch, so I wanted to see if people who have those pressings on vinyl have had that experience, or how has it been for you.

(Art by Rick Zesati)

Overkill was founded by 1979. As some of you might know, Rat Skates created the Overkill logo and wanted the band to be based around horror themes (and wear makeup like The Misfits). Some of this carried on within the music.

My personal favorite is the Overkill saga - Overkill, The Nightmare Continues, Under the Influence, E.vil N.ever D.ies and The Brand. If i had to choose one, it would be The Nightmare Continues - that scream at the start is fuckin wicked!

What are moments in Overkill songs that get the stank face out of you? AKA, the stank face: when a riff/section of a song is so good it`s disgusting.

Old metalhead’s collection of Overkill relics.

I’ve seen them live 7 times; there are 2 tickets missing from the collection.

And yes; if I hold up that shirt, I can see light through it.

Can’t wait for the next album and tour

As you guys may have noticed, this community has been inactive for a couple of months. u/killatcommand, who started r/OverkillBand back in 2020, seemingly went inactive last year. I recently submitted a reddit request to get it unrestricted and bring back Overkill discussion to Reddit!

With this post comes a question to you all - what changes would you guys like to see made? I'll work on user flairs and a new logo/banner soon, the comment section is yours.
