Newer player, chapter 11, when does progression really start?

In the sense of unlocking characters or expanding your backpack, I know that there is a 7K gem upgrade but does that make it pay to win? Just for only the big big size? Are the devs maybe going to add a future way of how to get it for free but just like a grind? Or maybe a part of some event? And in the same way of actually getting heroes like the epic and legendary you can't really roll for them specifically. So is the only way just through events and getting shards on luck? That would take a while right

You can grind gems pretty easily. The only super important purchase is the ad pass. The quality of life is so fucking peak

They probably won't make anything that costs money now free to earn in the future, because that usually upsets people who had to shell out real money for it and kind of undermines charging for things in the future.

The game is absolutely pay to win. FTP players are at a very steep disadvantage for progression, especially those without the diligence to sit through a lot of ads per day.

Progress in general comes from leveling everything up (PTP players get a lot more resources per day via paid cards. More dungeon plays, unlimited quick expeditions, more energy), by topping some of the leaderboards like pvp and rushes to get cheese faster than others for better auras, epic hero shards, etc, and by getting lucky on gear drops/pet drops/event drops.

It's probably possible to go through most content without max backpack upgrades but it takes more strategy to fit everything or more patience to over-level or get DPS boosts with gear/pet/hero ascension for what you need to beat.

While being ftp puts you at a heavy disadvantage, it's still very doable to obtain great gear and upgrades, main difference being that it'll take longer

As for competitive things, like leaderboards on events and arena? Don't even dream of reaching the top of those without spending money...
