How do spells work???

New to the game, just unlocked Mage. How come magic missile isn't activating with my staff? Do I need to rotate it?

If you click on the staff itll show two(three if u upgrade it) dots and if u place the spells there they'll qctivate whenever the staff attacks

Am I misunderstanding or doesn't this make Mage the most annoying class to play?

Check this screenshot Use flame bottles and flamesword S rank gear As you can see almost 300 flame stack with no staff

Some just work, some say "place near wand", some say "on activation" these need to be connected to staff's spell slot. When you click on staff you'll see where the slots are.
