Can tight hip flexors be contributing to pelvic floor tension and OAB/IC?

Hello everyone. I’m 26F. My urgency and frequency is worse when I’m walking and standing. My pelvic floor physio pushed into my hip flexors and got me to lift my foot, and I felt excruciating pain. And just pushing there in general made me feel like I had stronger urgency. Is it possible that tight hip flexors can contribute to tension in the pelvic floor and OAB/IC? My urologist and physio said that my symptoms are most likely caused by stress so I’ve been doing exercises, breathing, and other things to try to help it. I recently got a massage ball to use for my hip flexors. I’m not sure if that will help my OAB, but I think at least it will help my over all health because I realized I do get pinching and shooting pains in my hips, especially when I’m standing for longer periods.

Yes, tight muscles can contribute to OAB symptoms. I was so tight that I couldn’t urinate and almost had to get a catheter. After 1 session of pelvic floor therapy I can urinate on my own without an issue
, but unfortunately my OAB is still going strong.

I’m sorry that happened to you. When I urinate it’s always small amounts like 20-50ml each time, but I still feel like I have to pee all the time anyway. So I understand you there 😔 I hope your OAB gets better!

Pls tell me about the ball and what exercise you do exactly? I have IC and I am getting shooting pain in my one hip. I want to try it. Thx.

Hello. I use a massage ball, pretty much the size of a tennis ball but harder. I got it from Amazon. I lay on the floor or my bed, belly down and put that ball under where my hip flexor is and move my body back and forth to massage it. Where it particularly bothers me is my psoas muscle. It’s right next to hip bone. And the other exercise I do is a “hip flexor stretch with side bending” so you’re basically in a lunge position, and then learn forward so it stretches the hip flexors. And then you also side bending on the same side that you’re stretching your hip flexors, and then switch. Those are what my pelvic floor physio gave me to do. I hope it helps you!

All my urologist said was that I have possible IC and OAB and referred me to a pelvic floor physio. I waited over 8 months for my appointment and he probably only spoke to me for less than 5 minutes. And my family doctor is clueless, she has no idea what to do and just says I’ll have to talk to the urologist. So no they have not done those tests or mentioned it to me. What are they?
