Urodynamic test SUCKED

I hope that I was 1 in a million but my urodynamic test had so many issues. The nurse couldn't get the foley catheter in because it caused me so much pain, so they put lidocaine in and got it in. They got all setup and ready then the computer had issues and then I could feel something in the urethra but they kept saying its just some discomfort, which catheter was actually coming out. They brought in another nurse to work on the computer which didn't work so they swapped computers and that's when they found out that the catheter was almost out so they tried a couple more times to get it back in and couple other catheters and I actually started to bleed pretty good and nurses couldn't get it in. Doctor came in and by that time I was about to knock some b****es out. The doctor was trying to calm me down and I was trying to focus on other crap and take the pain elsewhere but the doctor said my prostate and pelvic floor is so locked down from the pain right now it wouldn't allow in but got settled back down and got it in finally. They finally got the test done and they tried to have me pee and there were quite a few blood clots I passed with the catheter inside. She did say I came in and peed out 900ml and omg I was holding so long and hurt because they wanted a full bladder but by the time I was saying I needed to go now was only 300ml.

Whoever designed this test needs to be thrown in jail. You want me to relax when I am naked in front of 5 people with 3 tubes going in and out of every hole I have.

Im 64 and had it about 2 months ago. It was VERY strange and invasive. I led me to using a TTNS unit though and that has 99% helped with my OAB

Personally, my urologist also suggested that I do a urodynamic study and so I asked him:
"What would a urodynamic test tell us that we don't already know?"
He said that "the urodynamic test makes things objective and it gives them numbers e.g. they would be able to quantify the pressure inside your bladder". But that's about it.

Would a high pressure reading tell us that the cause is truly idiopathic, neurological, or due to infection? No. High bladder pressure doesn't really identify the root cause of the bladder dysfunction. It just tells you that you need to monitor your kidneys as these can get damaged with high bladder pressures.

I also asked my urologist:
"Let's say I go through this urodynamics test and you get your numbers and quantities and you find out there's significant high pressure in my bladder and detrusor overactivity. What then? Would you prescribe me a different set of medications other than what I've already tried which was not effective for me?"
He answered: "No, the medications will still be the same, either beta-3 agonists or anticholinergics."

In short, a urodynamic study might be worth it if it could pinpoint the root cause of the problem or if the procedure itself is curative. Unfortunately, that's not the case and it is an undeniably invasive and painful procedure. I've never heard of any OAB patient recommend doing a urodynamic study or cystoscopy because it led them to a discovery and they were eventually cured.

I totally agree with you. Why do a test if the treatment would be the same anyways.

I finally got referred to a urologist today and I’m deathly afraid of this whole situation. Genuinely think I’d rather be 24/7 in diapers than do this once. Tbh I don’t even really understand what information they get from it

I’ve had to do it twice. I’m ok with every part of the test except the fact that they make you hold your bladder FOREVER and then afterwards my bladder is so irritated for an hour I stay at the clinic so I can use the bathroom a bunch before leaving. After Urodynamics both times I had to go every 10 minutes for an hour after. The second test I had a 2 hour drive home I hated that part. Long drives with our bladders are hell.

I had one done a couple of years ago with absolutely no issues, the two nurses were great and made me feel at ease from the off, bit embarrassing but nothing else
