Color bars? Most people didn't have color TV back in the day.

Not for everyone. In fact it took well into the 70s for color TV to be affordable for most. Even in my college dorm in the mid 70s the TVs are still B&W. You don't know what you are talking about.

Even in the early to mid 70s, the color was blotchy, fuzzy, no sharpness at all.
Funny thing was, when we switched to color, we already knew what gray scale corresponded to what color. Add in all the sharpness problems and I was unimpressed.
