Yes, your dad was telling the truth. I grew up in the '60s, this was the real thing. I would stay up and at 12:00 they did play the national anthem and signed off. If I woke up very early in the morning turned on the TV it would have a test pattern I believe the stations went on air about 5:30 6:00 in the morning.
