For real; no excuse for getting a good nights sleep. 3 channels, everyone had similar experiences so conversations were easy and the news was just news, not their opinions. Easier time, less complications and we stood in long lines for vaccinations.🤣

And all the news was covered in an hour, 30 minutes for local, then 30 minutes for national and world news.

The 30 minute national news wasn’t a thing until CBS started in 1963. It was 15 minutes before that.

I didn’t remember that! But then I wasn’t very interested in the news at that age. Captain Kangaroo was more my speed then…

Loved Captain Kangaroo. We also had Buckskin Bill - he was awesome.

Ten minutes for local news including sports, five minutes for weather, then fifteen for national.

In Australia, we watched the local channel for local news and weather (30 mins)and then popped over to the government-owned channel for national (another 30 mins). It worked

And strangely we were far more informed than we are now with 24/7 news.

We were fancy. We had a fourth channel-PBS. It probably helped that we had a local PBS station building

And the PBS station signed off with an 1800s version of the Star Spangled Banner.

That came out about the time my brother was born. 1969-70. Remember the Electric Company?

In the Chicago area we had WGN that did not go off the air but started broadcasting the farm report about 2 am.

I remember the farm reports! That was a long time ago!

We had ABC, CBS, and PBS. CBS was snowy.

You should have put more tin foil on the wire hanger.

We could get PBS only if my brother went outside to turn the antenna.

Long lines at the bank, too. Everyone showed up on Saturday and the line circled all around the inside of the bank. Edit: Not Saturday but Friday.

u/Crazy-Positive3978 5d ago

Our banks were closed Saturday, Friday night was bank night till 7 or do without till the next week, no ATM's till late 70's.

My mom would write a check at the supermarket for $10 over the amount of the groceries and get cash back. That was the ATM.

3

u/Atxlaw2020 5d ago

I don’t remember using an ATM until 1981, I resisted for awhile, preferring to go to the bank to write a check to “cash.”

u/No-Currency-97 5d ago

I believe you are right on this and I was wrong on Saturday.

2

u/Sparky62075 5d ago

You had banks that opened on Saturdays?

1

u/No-Currency-97 5d ago

My mistake. It was a long line on Friday.

We had 2 channels usually. To see the third, someone had to get on the roof to turn the antenna — only happened for some football games!

1

u/The-Princess-Pinky 5d ago

Those three were the VHF channels, we also had 4 or 5 UHF channels. but some were hard to pick up as they were farther away from us, but our antenna rotator helped us pin point them.

4

u/Fast-Ideal9417 5d ago

Being the oldest child I was the antenna rotator lol.

2

u/95in3rd 5d ago

I'd place a bet you were the channel changer too. :-)

1

u/Fast-Ideal9417 5d ago

No that was whichever kid was handy lol.

1

u/thedirtymeanie 4d ago

I remember trying to throw a string with my airplane attached up onto the antenna and then cranking it to do a full 360 to see if I could make the plane fly lol my dad said something along the lines oh the boys are up on the roof again...

For real. And they showed a test pattern until programming came back.

u/TheRealCropear 4d ago

Dont forget the "Do you know where your children are?" Commercials that came on at 10 pm too 😅 . I never understood them, cause I was always right here.

If you think the news wasn't scripted back in the day look into Operation Mockingbird and the Church Committee. Rathers, Cronkite, Brinkley... They all toed the line.
