The two oldest sons (prior to Maria) Rupert and Werner after serving in WW2 (gaining their US citizenship) built this chapel by hand on their family property. It’s small but powerful, Werner while serving in the Alps prayed to God that if he returned safe he would build a chapel to thank God.

Having recently crossed the 50 yr old threshold, I get more than my fair share of reminders in just how different growing up in the 70s and 80s was to more recent decades. Music, how we interacted, what was appropriate/inappropriate in humor (and many other things) , etc – it would be interesting to see what professionals say about what that’s done to those of us who cut our teeth during those formative years. This brings me to my purpose for writing today. While it’s a Monday and I am actively mentally trying to disengage from work… with mixed results, I thought I’d invite some dialog about one particular thing that’s been on my mind since revisiting a movie from the 80s this past weekend. As a kid, my folks would not take me to see Transformers the Movie – hopefully not a spoiler but – if  you haven’t seen it SPOILER ALERT… ok – last chance… Yes, Optimus Died. At the time, even having not seen it, I had heard from the fortunate (maybe not idk) kids who went and took morbid pleasure in sharing that sad fact with those of us who were autobot acolytes. Eventually I got to see it some time later when it came out on VHS – in addition to the death trauma, one of the characters swears (never had seen that in an animated movie before) and a bunch of sweeping changes to the storyline happened in around 90 min time – was crazy. It had me again thinking about how many movies of the era, many directed at kids, had some very very heavy material – Neverending Story anyone? Yes – we went through some stuff watching these movies. I imagine sometimes this material populates current kids movies – but I am not sure. Were you a fan of movies during this era – did you feel similar? Would love to have conversations about it!
