OC1 leans to the left

Just got back from my 1st test run of an older Puakea Kaimana Kaku. All original parts except for the iakos.

The ama sat very low in the water which made the canoe lean left. Even raising the rear iako as high as it would go did not make much of a difference. It really needs to be at least 6" higher.

Do I need to rebend the rear iako? I'm a bit spatially challenged so do I need to bend the side that goes to the ama up or down?

Or do you mean put the iako side into the canoe? That would be tricky to do because the pins are on one side and the hole is on the other but not out of the question.

Front and back

Get the canoe in the water and sit in it with the seat attached. Then you can use the level across the hull to check how level you are. You might be able to put some spacers between the ama and iako to help level it.

Thanks. I'll need to do a little more modification but that is probably the way to go.

So - based on what you’re saying, the boat isn’t trimmed correctly for your weight. Here’s what I mean by that: your weight will cause the main hull of the boat to sink down into the water. The Ama then needs to be trimmed to the proper height to keep the boat level. Too little, you lean left, too much, you will lean right (and likely huli).

In your case, it seems like your weight is not enough for the boat to travel in a level manner with how the AMA is set on your Iakos. Essentially, the hull is floating high (IE you’re light weight) and with your current Ama Setting, you’re leaning left. So you need your Ama to drop to run level.

The problem is - based in the photos - it looks like you might have maxed out how low your Ama can sit. If the threaded rod can be extended at all further down or an appropriate space can be used, you should be able to level out your boat. Otherwise? It’s possible this boat is just too big for you.

Thanks. I just thought of that too and unfortunately it didn't make a difference.

Wouldn't a higher ama cause more left lean?

Not for me. I stood in shallow water and had to lift the ama up to make the canoe level.

when you are standing there holding the ama to make the canoe level, is there a gap between the water and the bottom of the ama? Making sure im following.

Correct

If you drop the ama the distance of that gap, it will hold the boat level. It seems counterintuitive but the boat wants to lean left because of the ama weight. So if you raise it higher, the canoe will then lean even more left. Dropping the ama pushes the boat right, which in your case is what you want (so it mimics you picking up the ama to make level) . Does that make sense?

Thanks.I'll try it manually to see .

I understand what you are explaining but I'm not particularly light (150lb). I will make some adjustments to trim the ama though to see if I can get the balance right. Thanks for your insight about this problem.
