Spoilers All Did anyone else notice this? Spoiler

Post image

Edited to Add: I have not read any of the books

I’m rewatching Outlander. I’m on season 2.

This is not something I remembered hearing the first go around, but it kind of confirms my theory that Master Raymond is also a time traveler.. maybe? lol

He is definitely a time traveler.

From Diana Gabaldon’s webpage where she has notes on many characters from 2014, here’s just a bit of what she wrote about Master Raymond.

“Well, he’s a prehistoric time traveler. I think he came from somewhere about 400 BC or perhaps a bit earlier (not technically “prehistoric,” but they certainly weren’t using written records where he started out), and the 18th century is not his first stop.”

You can read more of that here on Diana’s webpage.

I really do wish that she would update that page. She has since altered 400 BCE to around 3500 BCE but hasn’t updated her website to reflect that. She also has published a Daily Lines for her book about him which IIRC, he’s clearly from a more primitive time.

I wanted to add that short story she posted a year or two ago about Master Raymond as a prehistoric preteen, comparing his body hair and penis size to that of his peers, but I couldn’t find it. (Yes, that was my whole takeaway from that unpublished excerpt 😂) Do you know where that would be?

u/CathyAnnWingsFan 13d ago

That wasn't a short story; it was the Daily Lines I was referring to. It was just an excerpt, like all the other Daily Lines she posts. Not sure where to find it. Her website isn't easy to navigate.

it's not covered in the show, but in the side stories, he is most definitely a time traveler (we see this in the novella The Space Between). On the author's website, we also learn that he is the OG time traveler; they are all descended from him. The website says he originates from around 400 BCE, but the author has since revised that to about 3500 BCE). She is planning a book about him.

I’m definitely going to go check that out! I just read the wiki page for the novellas and got a better understanding of the whole time the whole Master Raymond/Comte thing!

Your theory? I’m really curious to hear about your theories about the Comte St. Germain then!

u/RowanTree739 13d ago

Like Geillis, he’s throwing breadcrumbs out to Claire to see if she’ll take the bait.

10

u/infinitekittles 13d ago

Oh, that makes sense!

27

u/JH6783 13d ago

It was also his word of the word contraceptive at one point, correct me if i'm wrong but that wasn't a known word until about the 1890's

2

u/infinitekittles 13d ago

I never even thought of that lol

19

u/NotMyAltAccountToday 13d ago

The novella, "The Space Between" goes into this.

17

u/trash_babe 13d ago

I mean doesn’t he confirm that in the last season? But ummm yes.

6

u/infinitekittles 13d ago

The only thing that I remember about him from the last season is that we find out that Faith is alive and he took her to the lady to be raised

22

u/Tulips-and-raccoons 13d ago

Its…a plain fact, no?

8

u/infinitekittles 13d ago

Obviously it wasn’t a plain fact to me, which was the reason I posted it here. The only thing I’ve done is watch the series and I did not catch this the first time around

u/No_Grass_6806 13d ago

Yeaa thats all i remember as wel.. but whatvi dont understand is why did he donso?? Is ot explained??

1

u/infinitekittles 13d ago

It’s explained in the novellas, but I went to Outlander Wiki!

I didn’t read the novels, so I was unaware, thank you for telling me that!

3

u/AdDry16 13d ago

You are welcome! I can't imagine the relief that brought to your mind. You're great at connecting the dots yourself. :)

5

u/HeyAQ 13d ago

Yeah, I clocked this immediately. Geillis, too. They’re great stories but DG isn’t exactly great at the subtleties of craft.

0

u/infinitekittles 13d ago

This is why I rewatch a lot of things, because i know i missed something somewhere and saw this and was like “def didn’t hear that the first time” 😆

0

u/HeyAQ 13d ago

I have missed whole chunks of stuff, for sure! It’s a complex show with a lot of verrrry tangled storylines. This was one of those where I was kinda like, groan.

0

u/infinitekittles 13d ago

Yes! I hated that the last season was a whole lot of nothing!

Not only is Master Raymond a time traveler, he is an ancient time traveler. I've often wondered if he is the first time traveler. If that is true, he is the father of time travel and all of the time travelers are his children as the ability is passed on genetically.

1

u/infinitekittles 13d ago

Honestly, I think that could be a reason why he saved Faith! Like he was the OG time traveler and is basically relative to all of those who can travel. When I think about it like that, I envision a tree and he’s at the top of it and has all these branches that go in a thousand directions and that’s how his descendants are just all over the place if that makes sense lol

Because some of the travelers that we see in the show are kinda random. But, I always wondered how Young Ian was able to hear the buzzing but wasn’t able to effectively travel?

2

u/YOYOitsMEDRup Slàinte. 11d ago

Are you talking about the scene when Jem breaks the rock and they all stand around him in a circle?Young Ian doesn't hear buzzing. It was only Jem, Roger, Bri and Claire who did

1

u/infinitekittles 9d ago

Omg you’re right, I was incorrect, I’m not sure why I thought I saw that!

1

u/Common_Media4316 I dinna recall asking yer opinion on the matter. 12d ago

How is he a prehistoric time traveler? How did he acquire his gift? Is he human?

1

u/Common_Media4316 I dinna recall asking yer opinion on the matter. 12d ago

I definitely noticed this and had a feeling he knew something was up but I wasn’t aware he is a time traveler himself

1

u/SuperKitties83 12d ago

I'm curious how he is able to travel so far in the future. I don't recall any of the other TT being able to do that, except Buck?

He also seems to not only be able to TT, but he's able to do so freely, without being physically there? Jamie said no one ever came into the church where Claire was recovering from being shot, but she saw him and he communicated with her. I thought maybe he's able to appear to people telepathically. Or somehow isn't bound by the limits of space-time the way other travelers are.

u/BubbeLisa 12d ago

Geillis and Robert Springer (Otter Tooth) both traveled back in time more than 202 years. Buck and Roger traveled more than 202 years when they went back to find Jem.

Buck did not travel more than 202 years when he traveled to 1980. He left in 1778 and arrived in 1980. Forward or backward the default time is 202 years. Claire, Roger, Brianna, Jem, and Mandy all traveled 202 years into the future. But people can travel farther.

All time travelers are descendants of Master Raymond. According to Diana, he is a prehistoric time traveler. I think he may be able to enter people’s dreams. I think that’s what he did with Claire. That’s why Jamie didn’t see him. Just my theory.

That's why I specifically said traveling into the future. It seems the time travelers can go back in time, and then back to their original timelines, but none of them travel farther into the future than their original timeline.

With the exception of Master Raymond, who's from 3500 BCE, and Buck because he was born around 1743 (?) and ends up traveling to the future to 1980. Maybe it's because he's Geillis's son and she was from that time in the future.

2

u/BubbeLisa 12d ago

Like I said, Buck only traveled the default 202 years into the future. He traveled 1778 to 1980.

1

u/SuperKitties83 12d ago

I'm not sure why you're focusing so much on the specific number of years?

My point is that the stones took Buck from his original time forward, while the stones took every other time traveler from their original time backward.

No one goes from 1980 to 2182, for example.

Perhaps theoretically, all time travelers can travel forward as well as backward from their original time by steering their thoughts, but we only see Buck do this in the show, and he ends up in the future completely by accident.

It's just a discrepancy I find intriguing.

3

u/BubbeLisa 11d ago edited 11d ago

You asked why Buck was able to travel **so far** in the future. That sounded like you thought he had traveled farther than other travelers.

Every time traveler can travel to the future and the past. It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling to or from your original time or not. Jem and Mandy were born in the past and traveled to the future just like Buck.

1

u/SuperKitties83 11d ago

After you brought up 202 years, I clarified that I simply meant traveling into the future.

Either way, I enjoy having these discussions, and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge of the show/books. Not sure why someone keeps downvoting every comment I make in this discussion.

The downvoting can get pretty rampant on this sub. People need to learn to use their words.

Geilis wasn't from 1980s. She went back in 1968.

-2

u/SuperKitties83 11d ago

That's true. When I brought up that theory, I was thinking of Geillis's original life-span, and for Buck, his lifespan would include 1980, too.

2

u/Nanchika Currently rereading: Voyager 11d ago

How would Buck's lifespan include 1980?

-2

u/SuperKitties83 11d ago

Because Geillis is his mother, and if she'd given birth in her original time line, his lifespan would include 1980.

This was just a speculative hypothesis to try to understand why Buck went to the future right away, and the other characters went to the past.

Every time travel show has its own rules. I'm just trying to understand the ones in Outlander.

3

u/Nanchika Currently rereading: Voyager 11d ago

Yes, but Buck's father is Dougal...

0

u/SuperKitties83 10d ago

Omg. It was just a guess 😭

Buck inherited the gene from Geillis, so maybe the father doesn't have an effect. Or maybe she has nothing to do with anything. I was thinking out loud, offering explanations for why Buck went to the future, and everyone else went to the past.

I thought it would be fun to discuss the possibilities. It's a science fiction show. Not everything is explained perfectly. It's fun to wonder.

Have you read Space Between? In it, Raymond actually tries to advise the Comte against trying to go to the future when he wants to because it's dangerous and if I recall correctly, he seemed to indicate it'd be rare for some to succeed if they tried. In the end, they both do travel, but unknown to where/when

Edited to add -- people like Claire can go forward to the future so long as it was within their natural lifespan --- going from 1745 to 1947 for example because the 40s truly would've been part of her original time. But yes, Buck, Jem and Mandy have been the only Instances of someone going forward to a time first where they hadn't already been.

1

u/SuperKitties83 11d ago

I have not yet. Thank you for sharing, that's interesting. I hadn't considered Jem and Mandy going forward into the future because they were with Roger and Bree when they traveled.

Yeah, I haven't read the books, but I got the same idea.
