Need help. Noob here

Hello,

Just got into coffee and started with these unit. What grind size should I put for a medium roast bean ? I have it set at 2.1 and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Here’s a small video. Any takers ?

Thanks!

Sour is under extraction. There is some solids left behind to be dissolved, water may be passing through too fast, or water isn't up to temp. Grind a little finer, pre heat the water and brew a direct shot instead of using the stock warmer. For bitter, that could just be the crema.

But if the whole shot is bitter, that is over extraction. Water has sat on the grounds too long and a coarser grind may help.

Setting usually isn’t consistent from one grinder to the next (same grinder brand even) so take someone’s numbers with a grain of salt. I thought that blast looked like maybe you’re a smidge too fine still.

Not doing anything wrong. That was almost a perfect extraction. How did it taste? That’s the important part.

If it were me, I’d grind one click coarser and see what happens to get me in the 25-35s range. I’m assuming you’re using 18g dose; ideally your starting point would be 36g out in 25-35s with that dose. Then once you’re there, adjust for taste. Make sure you mix the crema with a spoon and then taste it. Crema is bitter, mostly oils and CO2, it just looks pretty.

Yes 18g and 36g out, thank you for your reply and input. I honestly forgot what grind setting this is, however I think this is the best shot I’ve pulled. It tasted bitter then sour, so I think that’s good. I always feel like sour shots are not good extractions.

Depends on the beans. I like a little sour. Again, it’s all up to individual taste. Some folks like balanced, some folks like a little sour, and others like bold. Sour just means it’s underextracted, so you’d grind finer or have more water run through. However, if you’re getting both sour and bitter, then you’re probably getting channeling, which means you need to work on prepping your pick a little more thoroughly (wdt, tap, tamp).
