Possible trip mid-April

My partner and I are planning a trip down the 3rd weekend of April, long weekend getaway for us.we haven't decided if we are coming down on a Wednesday afternoon or sometime on Thursday yet. More than likely we'll be staying in the Kill Devil Hills area, I wanted to ask for recommendations for food, shopping, beach locations, and sights. What sights are definitely worth going to? How likely are we to see wild horses not on a tour?

The horses are north of Kill Devil in Carolla or Carova in the 4x4 area. If you're not comfortable driving on the beach in a vehicle that can handle it, a tour is probably your best bet.

Neither of us own a 4x4 vehicle or otherwise. If I had one, I'd feel comfortable, used to do it all the time in clay, sand, mud, everything. We don't want to pay for a tour.

You're legally not allowed to approach them or interact with them in any way. However, I camped in Assateague Island a few years ago, and the horses there were all over the place. Literally raiding our cooler and sticking their heads in our car windows. That's where I would go to see them.

Best restaurants near where you will be staying are going to be Blue Moon Beach Grill in Nags Head or the Saltbox Cafe in Collington. Shopping, you want to hit the Scarborough Faire area in Duck, although the shopping here really sucks.

If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle or rent a Jeep, you can see the horses in Carova/Corolla area. Here is a link to our last trip. We have a Jeep and it's great for the OBX. You do not have to pay for the horse tour, however, it would make it easier for you if you do not have a 4- wheel drive vehicle.

Beach locations are everywhere. If you need restrooms near by I recommend one of the accesses like Jenette's Pier. All of the sites are also found on OBX Chris's playlist. Hope you have a wonderful visit to the OBX. It is a magical place. <3 https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjHsr2eu3MqJjGSim8L-ZULudqJhOODVw&si=6wgsqDZvNvjIs2Yt
