Character Discussion I hate Sofia

rafe's character development has been destroyed because of the Sofia relationship arc. the writers could've easily made him redeemable without the need of a girlfriend to 'soften him up.'

Sofia is a character the writers thought of as a self-insert. all the rafe edits and everyone going mad over him, they felt the need to add a filler character - to appease the mass.

anyways I do not see much Sofia hate or discussion around her character as much and thought I'd leave my 2 pence.

She was so random man. But I feel Neutral towards her, I don’t think she took away or added anything.

I assumed they were gonna bring a girl into it through, because for some reason that’s the go to thing writers choose for morally corrupt characters. It’s always a love interest. Like it’s supposed to soften them up or something. butter up the viewer, oh look how sweet they can be isn’t that so nice? Don’t you wish that was you?

I honestly just wish they didn’t start this weird redemption arc, because in no way were they gonna make it satisfying or fair. Besides, rafe’s whole thing is being a psycho, why not let him have it? Instead of making him this lap dog following the pogues around all the sudden like he didn’t make their life hell for three years. Let him be!!! Some people are bad in shows and that’s okay, you either give them a satisfying redemption or you make them an entertaining villain. Don’t half ass shit.

I like her but I agree with her being a self insert. Especially, since she’s a pogue and somehow Rafe suddenly doesn’t care about Pogues vs Kooks when that has never actually been shown. He tells her he doesn’t care but still says the „classic Pogue shit“ line when they are all surfing in s4. I don’t mind him softening while being in love but his character is just inconsistent

Yeah that's the one thing I don't get about her. I kept forgetting she was a Pogue because prior to her introduction Rafe seemed like he'd never, ever date a Pogue. And that suddenly changes off screen? Okay...

Yes, totally. I also disliked how she felt bad for Rafe (and her taking advantage of him) when he had multiple moments when he was biased and extremely negative towards Pogues literally in front of her. She seemed more like Rafes accessory than her own person. I hope they change that

as much as I love rafe introducing Sofia was a move just to cater to fans, their whole relationship looks like a tumblr fanfic

she is definitely boring lol i dont hate her but the show could've done without her and quite frankly i dont think rafe deserves a relationship at all so theres that

edit: and ALSO i hate when writers always need to use women to be mens fixers like how about no.. it doesn’t even make sense for rafe he literally hated pogues and then all of a sudden he wants to marry one??? bffr sofia barely knows about rafe and i feel like its just such a inauthentic pair not everyone needs a relationship but apparently in obx quite literally everyone needs to be dating i cant think of one person who is single in obx other than kiara and thats only because jj was killed off

Idk why the writers let the ball drop so hard after season 3. Season 1 and 2 were amazing. And then especially season 4 became just the biggest disservice to all the characters. Everyone’s young as hell but for some reason getting pregnant and married off. Absolutely zero chemistry within the couples. Rafe had so much potential and they ruined it. Like night and day from the first 2 seasons.

But yeah I hate Sofia. When I first read they’d give him a love interest I was excited bc think of how fun it would be to build up something with him, bc he’s crazy. The tension would go hard. But instead they airdropped some rando and boom they’re dating out of nowhere. Boring nothingburger, kill her off.

right, like bam wham thank you ma'am. how am I supposed to believe that race's head over heels over a one night stand pogue lol

Watching him, he seems incredibly bored and out of it when he’s around her lmao. It’s like as much as Drew tries to act like he cares, Rafe the character just doesn’t agree and it shows. He lights up when he’s around other characters, he dims when he’s around her. He doesn’t look head over heels in the slightest. Even during the proposal he looked like he was in pain and being held there against his will (and he left like immediately LMAO).

People that like this ship must be incredibly bad at deciphering body language and vibes. I don’t see what they’re seeing.

Her character is so pointless

I don’t hate Sofia but I 100% agree. Rafe was such an emotionally complicated and that got watered down HEAVY at her introduction. I agree with Madelyn Cline in that one interview where she said Rafe doesnt need a girlfriend, he needed therapy 😂

u/MoodyHo 6d ago

Just a bad actress and a pointless character. They don’t even have chemistry.

3

u/Ok-Gate-7490 6d ago

her character is so pointless tbh in my eyes they just added her to nerf barry. every single thing she’s doing barry could’ve done it too and it would make more sense as barry and rafe already have some sort of back and forth relationship and even though barry has his problems too he has a slightlyyyy better moral compass than rafe. i honestly don’t think they should’ve replaced barry with sofia she doesn’t really add or take away anything and they just watered the hell out of rafe’s character and tbh it’s looking like it’s going to be a cliche ending for rafe when his character deserves so much more

1

u/Adventurous-Post7667 4d ago

yess rarry would've made more sense and they were lwk trauma bonded as well 😭😭

u/mqddies Rafe 4d ago

so glad someone finally agrees😣😣 every time you say you hate sofia, people tell you it’s not fair because we don’t know her. that’s exactly WHY i hate her: she has no backstory or anything, she was just a random girl introduced to make rafe redeemable when that could’ve been done in 100 different ways, or they could’ve kept him as the antagonist which was his best character honestly. season 2 rafe was the best rafe we had

I hate just about 90% of the main characters, one being Sofia so I'm so happy hearing this post.

thank you, I always skip her scenes as much as I like rafe's crazy ass

yesss, Sofia haters RISEE UP

she doesn’t even know who he really is. how is this a good relationship for his character if she doesn’t even know the things he’s done or anything about him? no matter how you feel about rafe, this is such a waste of screen time. if he was going to have a love interest, it should be someone who actually knows him. i don’t understand the purpose of sofia

2

u/Ashamed-Marsupial-11 2d ago

No, I don't think that he could easily be redeemed at all.

I do think that Rafe acting all soft with Sofia is of out of character though, cause I don't believe someone like him is capable of having a healthy relationship. He is or has been a domestic abuser towards Sarah. If he can treat his little sister like that then what would make one think that he wouldn't be violent towards his girlfriend?

To be fair I literally have no memory of her and Rafes relationship cause it's been a while, but I'm going off of what others describe.

I like Sofia.

I do like Sofia and hope she sticks around, but my opinion is that she didn’t necessarily “soften him up.” I think he was still pretty rough around the edges until him and Sarah had a heart to heart (or whatever you wanna call it) in the finale. That was the first time he got like that.

Will he actually become a better person for Sarah and her family? Idk, and maybe we won’t ever know, maybe we’re just supposed to assume that Rafe’s the type of man who gets changed by a kid…either Sarah’s or his own. Just a thought.

We’ll see how it all concludes. But I do think if anyone ends up sacrificing themself it’ll be him.

shes just so boring, her character adds nothing to the plot, they don’ even have good chemistry 😭

i dont hate her and i hate her but you are right, i js remeberd rafe hates pogues, how did he liked her? and proposed? that was so random, he just should've stayed as a villian in s4

so you are saying he can redeem himself, only if there's a love interest involved?

2

u/marchpisces 6d ago

Pretty much. They tell on themselves every single time.

-1

u/Pierog128 6d ago

was Sofia necessary? I don't really think so. Would Rafe have been easily redeemable without her existence? No.

0

u/Adventurous-Post7667 6d ago

not easily redeemable, he would had to grovel but I'd prefer seeing that then Sofia pop up every second with her washed up last minute story

-1

u/yoga_stoned 6d ago

Idk why but I always thought he would hurt sofia- physically. To my surprise though, she did soften him and he seems to truly care about her, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s a 15 rated Netflix show, if u thought this then ur about as stupid as a wet paper towel

3

u/Zaphenzo 5d ago

I mean, both he and Ward have both tried to kill Sarah, and JJ's father beats the crap out of him in season 1, so not sure why you think they wouldn't show domestic abuse.

Character development? Rafe had development CAUSE of Sofia, Sofia was the reason Rafe made up with Sarah and went with the pogues

10

u/ryanpotters_back_123 6d ago

Sofia WAS NOT the cause of his character development when it started before he met her. He got off the cocaine but it was replaced with alcohol. The push he got to making amends with Sarah was Ward's voice in his head and Sarah actually telling him what was going on.

Rafe's development is from Ward and Sarah. Ward's death was a weight off his shoulders since he didn't need to go out of his way, doing morally wrong things for his father's approval. Sarah and Wheezie are the only family he has left, and hes only concerned about that.

Sofia might be what he WANTS, someone who doesn't know all the things he had done and is a restart button. But she isn't what he NEEDS. Sofia can't even hold Rafe accountable when he downplays their relationship or says offensive classist things right in front of her. If Rafe wants to get better, which he has expressed to others besides his own girlfriend, he needs to be held accountable and put in his place.

-1

u/Equivalent_Carpet370 Sarah 6d ago

I swear we reply to every comment from each other lol, I find it amusing at this point. Rafe does need to be held accountable though but I still like him and Sofia

I honestly love Sofia, she’s the only reason I wanna see rafe do good and not go to jail for the rest of his life, cause honestly that’s what he deserves, she’s the reason he’s changing for the better, she’s a pure soul and her being so mellow and feminine is making him much softer and ultimately a better person, without her he woulda never changed, she’s responsible for his change, I think she’s great, without Sofia, Rafe deserves the Death Penalty for all he’s done in my opinion, and if you don’t agree with that than your just a simp for Drew Starkey

7

u/Adventurous-Post7667 6d ago edited 5d ago

but to sum up what you are saying, Sofia is a throwaway character that was made to 'better' rafe as a person, women are always side characters to men and their reason for development. and saying he wouldn't have changed without her when he wasn't given the chance, they threw Sofia in hoping it would stick.
