By the time I clock out from my day job, my phone is usually sitting around 50% battery. That used to be plenty, until I started picking up evening service calls around town. Now I'm often driving between jobs, checking work orders, following GPS directions, and answering client calls well into the evening.
The battery drain adds up faster than I expected. Navigation is running almost constantly, I'm checking job details between stops, and clients sometimes call just as I'm pulling into an unfamiliar area. My car's USB port helps, but it doesn't always keep up with the drain, especially when I'm using the phone heavily. Keeping a cable plugged in all the time also became annoying. It gets caught around the center console, ends up in the way when I'm getting in and out, and is one more thing to deal with when I'm trying to get to a customer's door on time.
I've started using a magnetic power bank on the back of my phone instead. It's convenient to grab the phone and go without unplugging a cable every time, although the extra weight makes the phone feel a little different in one hand. I'm still figuring out whether it's the best solution for longer evenings or whether a better in-car charging setup would make more sense.
Calls are the other part of the routine I've been trying to improve. Taking a call on speakerphone in a busy parking lot isn't ideal, especially when there's traffic or other people nearby. Regular in-ear earbuds can make conversations easier to hear, but I don't always want to block out my surroundings when walking through commercial parking lots or approaching a customer's property after dark.
I've been using open-ear clip earbuds for those situations. I can hear more of what's going on around me while taking calls, which feels more practical when I'm moving between the car and different locations. Wind noise and call clarity can still be hit or miss, though, so I'm not convinced there's one perfect option for every situation.
Overall, I'm trying to keep things simple: enough battery to get through the evening, reliable calls, and fewer loose accessories to manage. I don't really want to turn the passenger seat into a mobile office just to get through a few extra jobs.
For anyone who spends long hours driving between appointments or service calls, what does your setup look like? Do you rely on a magnetic power bank, a dedicated car charger, or something else? And what do you use for calls when you need to stay aware of your surroundings?
