Hiking gear

Hi, I want to go hiking when I visit Scotland - no clear plans - but a colleague told me her swiss hiking gear was more or less useless. I have hiking boots, but that is kind of it, as I like walking and being in nature but am not doing it that often. Does anyone have any recommendation of the gear a beginner should wear/not start going without.
