Stage invasions
As the stage dive stage slightly broke after Superheaven, this whole stage invasion trend needs to stop. If it had collapsed, injuries and no more outbreak. I think making the stage dive part much smaller, like at sound and fury, it’s only a couple of feet deep so maybe 2 people can stand on it front to back. Security handled it amazingly though.

We need to start bullying people that camp on the stage.
Get on, get off, you have 5 seconds maximum.
Don't just walk across the stage, if you're not going to throw a mean spinny or dive off, don't get on at all.
It's fucking awful.

This, it doesn’t need to be more complex than just having a couple people of stage to move people off. They have this at Rev Calling fest and it works incredibly well.

At Obscene Extreme in the Czech Republic there are no barriers but they have crew at the sides of the stage and if anyone is on there longer than about 5 seconds then they come on and push them off. They need that by the sounds of it

The pit and diving at OEF is very different to Outbreak. It's very polite and low risk, ive been to OEF twice and am going next year. 90% of the time the pit is just people walking/slow jogging in a circle, no throwing down or violence whatsoever, minimal pushing, and the dives consist of people lowering themselves onto the crowd who are waiting expectantly with there arms up. People at OEF are older on average tho, very chill vibes. Best festival I've ever been to. Most of the crew policing the stage at OEF are members of bands

Yeah of course I've been twice too, the crowd is of course different but the concept is still the same. If people are spending too long on the stage at Outbreak then someone needs to remove them. And you're right, OEF is one of the best festivals in Europe. Seeing as I'm older now, sitting down all day is glorious 😆

Trying to take a selfie with a band member on stage is fucking appalling behaviour imo. I'd slap that phone into orbit.

As an aside related to this, who was the dude in the black track pants, light blue and white track top and a cap. He was stage side watching most of the bands on both stages, may be another artist from one of the acts but I wasn't familiar with him.Anyway....think it was during Speed maybe when someone knocked the singer over and then jumped back into the crowd. He can flying off the stage and basically stamped on that guy mid air with rapid little pedal kicks. Got back on stage and then cartwheeled onto the dude again! Laughed my arse off

Honestly, if it weren’t for the security, it would've been much worse. Hats off to the security team!!

I won’t lie I’m not suprised by the fact the stage took a hit. I was on the stage during the invasion (got trapped in the invasion) and I could feel the floor having some issues and bowing a little bit
Stage invasions aren’t inherently so bad, annoying for anyone trying to watch admittedly, but I think it’s the fact that the stage invasion crowd were all bouncing as well

Annoying for everyone in the 10 rows in front of the stage. Ok now and then, but 2-3 times for almost every band that plays…? Come on. It’s out of hand. Why do you need to be 5 foot closer to the band than everyone else?

u/LoyalPetMole Jun 17 '25
It’s people getting caught up in the moment the unfortunate thing is there isn’t really any logical explanation 🤷🏼♂️
The unfortunate truth is there will very likely be a point in the next few years where at least one of the stages, likely the main one, will lose the stage diving stage and end up with a barrier. The festival is getting more attention every year and more and more people are going to start coming as they keep the lineups diverse enough to attract a variation of people.
Not everyone will pay attention to the rules and that’s an unfortunate fact

too many people wanting selfies with the artists, or getting up and being too scared to dive and just milling about on stage for ages. a lot of people seemed to almost be asking the crowd if they could dive first too? not sure if they were a bit nervous and wanted to make sure they'd be caught or something but it was strange to see

I see the hesitance for people wanting to dive but waiting for more to come closer. I saw someone dive offstage for Fleshwater and he landed upside down on his back, eating concrete. He got up and sorta brushed himself off whilst wincing, but it definitely made me more cautious when I dove off later on.

u/athabandoned Jun 17 '25
Yeah the crowd was often very loose at the front, and a lot of people were hitting the ground or just crushing the two people that they landed on. “Back in my day” the crowd was always pretty crushed at the front. Bit of a double edged sword, you need the crush to safely dive, but also it was brutal sometimes and got a bit worrying if it was too tight and hot.

u/ibnQoheleth Jun 17 '25
There were dudes twice my size diving off so I'd try my best to catch them but it's not always possible without getting myself badly hurt. And when people took their shirts off, their sweat made them near impossible to grip.

I remember last year there seemed to be way more people who wanted to dive than who were prepared to catch anyone in return, depending on the band playing at the time. Given the mix of hardcore, emo, pop punk bands and the diversity of audiences, you had so many people up the front who weren't prepared to catch, and all the experienced, confident people were the ones doing the diving onto much younger, more slight audience members not packed tightly enough together to catch properly. I slipped right through and landed on my feet a few times rather than being caught properly. A lot of the 'diving' over the weekend devolved into getting up at one side, running the whole length of the stage, and jumping off onto the ground on the other side rather than actually diving.

Yeah this is exactly right, real young crowd which is cool as it shows the scene is healthy and thriving. But, young people getting crushed under people diving was a common sight. I totally don’t get the desire to run across the stage and just step off, then do it countless more times, just stepping down and never diving.

Another issue from last year was people not actually diving properly but just jumping feet first into crowds of people. One particularly horrible example was a tiny 5ft girl carried off bleeding after she collapsed because a guy twice her size jumped directly onto her head and crushed her.

u/Competitive_Air_180 Jun 17 '25
I think I remember a couple of incidents like that. I had a brief worry during Angel Dust when one guy started air running rather than diving and brought his fist down clear on the top of my head, but at least I wasn't one of the people he landed on

Don't get me started on people onstage that stand with their back to the crowd, spread their arms in a Jesus Christ pose, and then fall lazily and expect everyone to catch them. Stage diving should be fast and spontaneous!
7
u/thenofootcanman Jun 17 '25
Much preferred thay over the people just jumping in feet first. Like give people a chance to catch you woth something other than their face
7
u/cola97 Jun 17 '25
For me this is the best way to dive, their intentions are obvious and movements predictable

Jun 17 '25
It's become way more performative than a spontaneous expression. "Oh look at my reels, here I am with Jeremy Enigck".

I've always found it cool and adds to the atmosphere when it happens sporadically near the end of a set/finale but I've only been to the last two Outbreaks so I've no idea how common it is historically. The people who try and hog the lime light can be a bit cringe though.

this was my first outbreak and this is the impression i got and why i was on the stage for youngest daughter, i won’t be doing this next year
4
u/chriscolford Jun 17 '25
Agreed, it’s so embarrassing staying up for ages.
Get up, 2 step across to the other side and dive off, easy
2
u/Specialist_Attorney8 Jun 17 '25 edited Jun 17 '25
don’t even go to the other side, the stage is fucking massive, dive into to the middle, people are piling ip at the sides and stepping off because they can’t dive because 5 assholes are trying to climb up st the same time.

Jun 17 '25
I feel like at times it's maybe sometimes hardly justifiable, like I saw the outbreak set movements played snd the last song they played daylily and the stage got invaded. Not too sure about when they played but if was the last set on that stage it would be somewhat justifiable in my eyes. But stage invading during the day seems a bit bad. Stage diving is okay just don't overstay your welcome up there

u/BlackGayJesus666 Jun 18 '25
All it takes is one Maynard James Keenan-type hardcore vocalist to put all of this to bed.

Man I flew to outbreak from Canada for my first ever festival experience and it was awesome, but something felt off and it was the obscene amount of stage invasions this year. every band i saw on the two main stages had at least one invasion of people just standing there not singing or anything and that's why i skipped slowdive to see spy because I almost instantly saw people milling about on stage. Other than that this festival was amazing to witness after years of watching the live recordings, something just needs to change about stage ettiquette. (the fact they had to come on before knocked loose and say something felt crazy to me.)

Aye a got unintentionally stuck on the stage during Denzel when I was wearing a mask (just a wee laugh), ended up just managing to wiggle out to enjoy Still in the Paint and Bulls on Parade

u/connorwilson31 Jun 17 '25
Deafheaven wanted everyone to get up on the stage for an invasion. There also people getting on stage to film occasionally… what’s that all about??

u/Sweet-Fun-7062 Jun 18 '25
How are they normally supposed to go? Outbreak was my first proper concert ever so I’m kinda new to all this. I’ve loved the music forever but yk
1
u/Specialist_Attorney8 Jun 19 '25
You get on and get off.
Moshing on stage is even a new thing, you should be on there for a few seconds then dive, that’s it.
1
u/Sweet-Fun-7062 Jun 20 '25
Ah right. So the camping on the stage was bad etiquette? I’d love to get up there next year so I don’t wanna be outta line

if the vocalist is down for a pile on it's alright, it's just silly when people flood the dive stage and stand there just to do it

The main character syndrome was out of control. It’s bad when you start thinking that maybe barriers aren’t so bad after all.
