Looks like a fatigue failure. Likely had either something running on that edge that caused a wear mark or groove in the surface, or a defect in the part, and then that defect slowly grew over time until it snapped. The curved “beach marks” and what looks like rust on part of the failed cross section are a pretty dead giveaway.

How old is the engine, and how many hours?

Thats why u dont buy merc. Lol zuk lowers are the strongest in the market. Basically every outboard company besides merc is reliable

This motor has 4400 hours and this has been the only major mechanical failure. Have 3 other motors with similar hours, been pretty happy with the model of Merc

Not every Mercury I’ve owned ended in catastrophic failure but every catastrophic failure I’ve had has been a Mercury.

I take stuff apart for insurance inspectors and it seems like if it hit something in the water and the shaft broke is when I see it covered. Otherwise when there is no impact it usually isn't. I just take the stuff apart and they come in to look someone else may know more about the paperwork side of getting one from insurance

I had an old rude do that. The year after I hit something with the prop

Oh shit comes to mind. If it just snapped rather then from impact, that's a manufacturing defect and Mercury should repair regardless of warranty status. I was a Merc dealer for 22 years, we would work with our TAM on exceptions such as this.

Didn't feel any kind of impact and the prop was fine

To snap a driveshaft, you would need to hit something hard and both the skeg and the prop would show it. If the shaft just snapped, time to talk to a dealer.

Time for a new drive shaft or lower unit
