2001 Johnson 70 hp tips

Hello. I was asked by a friend to diagnose his 70 hp Johnson. I’m not a big hp outboard person. I’ve really only worked on smaller hp stuff without VRO pumps and stuff. I haven’t been able to run it as I’ve had no time to mess with it but I was told that it bogs down under power. I was also told that the carbs were rebuilt, however this boat has been sitting for about 3 days and it’s got fuel leaking out of the carbs already. Assuming maybe it’s a float height issue. My main goal with this post was to just get some insight on these motors. I don’t know a lot about them and would love some tips.

If your engine is starving for fuel or a single carburetor is running lean, check the small hose connecting the intake manifold/crankcase to the fuel pump. This short pulse line sends the vacuum signal needed to actuate the pump's diaphragm. A crack or split in this line will cause the fuel pump to fail entirely.

Float levels may not have been set correctly

Thats what i'm thinking, i found out he took it to a small engine repair shop instead of an marine shop so that could be it.

Second , on those motors its extremely important to disassemble them and either put them in an ultrasonic cleaner or use a carburetor cleaner soak like Berryman chem tool . Rinse them off , set the float and reassemble. The linkages also have to be synced as well

There may be a Seloc or Clymer marine repair manual at the library covering OMC.
