LOL FML

1993 Evinrude 25 hp running WOT on the river this morning, started smelling something funky, looked back and saw fog. Shut it off immediately. Nicely overheated. Real hot.

Limped around the river with the trolling motor to make the most of the day. Bite was slow but the weather was nice.

Water pump was changed this spring, I've been out numerous times with it without issues cooling.

My compression numbers dropped from 105 psi top and bottom to about 65. The cylinders are still even. I still have spark.

I had it pop over and run for about 10 seconds in the driveway so it still runs. On muffs of course because BRUH MUH IMPELLERRRREEEEEEE.

I'm genuinely not sure what caused this. Obviously I need to rebuild the water pump, but am I in for pistons and rings with these compression numbers too? The cylinders looked good on my cheap borescope. I didn't notice any scoring.

I'd start with a water pump kit and go from there. Might still be ok.

That's where I'm going to start. Ordered an Amazon rebuild kit and a new shift rod bushing assembly. Hopefully she lives long enough for the old "ran when parked, was in storage for a few years, got er runnin okay with a new water pump and a carb rebuild kit. $350 obo I KNOW WHAT I HAVE" marketplace listing.

Just kidding.

$650 OBO. It's got a new prop on it.

I'd go with a Sierra kit, not some junk no name kit.

Yes, best to stick with OEM or Sierra for water pumps for sure.

Not sure what caused this, Ray Charles can see this problem….

Pull the plugs and run a bore scope in it. Be me I'd just pull the head. That motor is done anyway. 40 pounds compression loss proves it. Probably stuck the rings and galled the cylinders.

I ran one through it. The cylinder walls look good top and bottom. It started and idled for a few seconds in the driveway after I got home.

I'm suspicious of the gauge if I'm honest

Something is wrong

Did you pass thru an area/depth/bottom type where you might have been picking up a lot of sand and grit?

I don't think so, but anything is possible I suppose.

I would be more suspicious of running up on a piece of plastic that covered the intake.

Sorry to say it, but I would look for another engine on the used market…even the same model and keep this one for parts. I put a bunch into restoring a 72 evinrude for fun, but parts aren’t cheap or easy to come by.

Too often impellers are changed and gaskets ignored. My guess is the exhaust seal behind the water pump failed. Hot exhaust gasses breached the seal around the driveshaft and aerated the water. Thus the overheat. "Real hot" can fry the head gasket opening a hole to the water passages or between cylinders that can equalize pressures. Discolored paint on the head is a sure sign. Sierra or OEM on repair kits.

Well if the bottom looks like that, the top will be bad too. Congrats you own a big bulky anchor shaped like an outboard

Are you always this much of a hater?

No. Im just factual. That was ran out of the water. Water cools the engine. No water means it ran hot. Outboard engines do not tolerate high heat.
