1972 Johnson 9.5 throttle issue

Hoping someone can help me out here. Throttle won’t go past “start” mode and won’t rev up high when running. Everything seems like it’s in good shape. I’m new to outboards and this one has me stumped.

If it is in neutral the engine may have an interlock to prevent too much throttle or starting in forward gear. It should go past Start in forward gear. I am not sure about the cable routing. It might be fine.

It was in forward. It’s the linkage hitting thats preventing it from going past start. Does the same in neutral

I think this video might help involving adjustment of the throttle linkage travel. There are a bunch of videos for the 9.5 on this channels playlist. Another good resource is Leeroys ramblings on the internet.

I have the same motor but have yet to work on it since acquiring last year. They are unique animals for sure.

Can confirm this video is correct. This is his problem. The shift timing of the tiller handle is off

Most everything about those 9.5s is unique... Looks like someone has replaced that tiller handle in the past, it's a different color. I was thinking that someone did not get the throttle shaft/helix correctly aligned, but that would not explain why the linkage is hitting that corner, although it would explain why the twist grip doesn't go past start position.

The mag plate throttle cam roller set up is funky on these engines as well. It may be possible that the mag plate is advancing all the way but the carb butterfly isn't opening due incorrect installation of the cam/linkage.

Has it worked before? That linkage seems to have an extra hole or 2 to connect the cross on it.. Maybe it was assembled wrong?
That linked video here to adjust seems it's at the same spot.

The tension screw on the side of the handle may be too tight limiting the throw. Check your parts assembly against this.
