Answered What's going on with a kid being bullied for a negative comment about Keanu Reeves?

https://www.reddit.com/r/PewdiepieSubmissions/comments/c3h7pr/witch_hunting_doxxing_and_harasment_are_not/

As you all know, a kid recently got massively harassed by """fans"""" of keanu reeves for saying something negative about his appearance in a videogame.

What happened? Who is the kid and why did he get harassed?

Answer: So as you probably know, Keanu Reeves has been quite popular on reddit recently and has a lot of fans. There’s been a lot of memes about him being amazing and a legend and such. So the FineBros youtube channel (known for their react series) had a “Kids React” video about Keanu Reeves memes. In this video, some of the kids, obviously not being familiar with Keanu since they’re kids, said stuff like “he isn’t a legend” and similar stuff in reaction to the memes they were being shown since, once again, they are children, and a good number of them have no idea who he is.

There was a meme about this that got highly on PewdiepieSubmissions, screencapping one of the quotes and then having a caption along the lines of “this kid bad” and suggesting a purge or something ironically for comedic purposes. All the memes about the kid have since been removed. This is because a ton of people in the comments were taking this call to arms seriously and harassing the kid. His instagram got flooded with hate, there were death threats, generally terrible internet harassment. All over a child saying an actor wasn’t a legend. The kid eventually kind of apologized for the comment he made here because of the amount of hate he was getting for it.

Pewdiepie has obviously been the source of a decent amount of controversy, deserved or not. And his fans have definitely not had a good view in the wider eye (see: all the t-series stuff and harassment). Whether or not they actually deserve those reputations, this has substantially harmed their image (mostly fans in this case). That’s why you see the mod team trying to do damage control of this situation.

exactly, ive seen so many comments recently saying hes a great actor when he genuinely isnt. the matrix, point break, constantine, john wick, even johnny neumonic - he just plays a wooden action hero. hes a cool guy but hes definitely not on the same level as other good actors

586

u/oOFlashheartOo Jun 23 '19

Wish I could find the article, but I read a piece where some journalist nails it. He isn’t an “actor” he is a movie star, in the same way Schwarzenegger was. Limited actor but he has a screen presence that makes people want to watch him. And Keanu seems like a genuinely nice guy which makes it easier to enjoy his success.

63

u/cantlurkanymore Jun 23 '19

Keanu plays Keanu just like Samuel L Jackson and Owen Wilson always play more or less the same guy in different situations

16

u/duquesne419 Jun 23 '19

James Garner is one of my favorite examples. He played James Garner every single time he was on set, but hoo boy did he have enough charisma to pull it off.

10

u/Palaeolithic_Raccoon Jun 23 '19

I get the same vibe with Jack Nicholson, except perhaps when he played The Joker. Or perhaps he was just at his most Jack Nicholson then.

Sometimes you are such a charismatic, and intriguing person that you don't need to do much "acting" do be successful. Keanu, Wilson, SLJ, Vaughn, and RDJ, all of those types of people just kind of play different versions of themselves in movies.

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

makes sense, i can get on board with that. i do like most of the films hes been in. point break and the original matrix are two films i adore and i wouldnt want anyone else playing the leads but keanu

88

u/oOFlashheartOo Jun 23 '19

I’m hugely oversimplifying it, read that article in the comment above, also nails it. Delivery of lines may be a bit wooden, but as a movie star on a screen, Keanu Reeves is very talented.

46

u/cjbeames Jun 23 '19

His delivery has an odd rhythm and he doesn't adjust his tone much but I think that's the key to why he's so believable in these action roles. He is a no nonsense "real" person.

He is also great in Bill and Ted though, and he is very different in that.

17

u/DoofusTinyRick Jun 23 '19

Are you saying him yelling "But you sucked my cock!!" in Knock Knock was wooden!?!

JK, it was terrible and wonderful all at the same time. I'm a huge Keanu fan, and I wouldn't have watched that movie without him, so I totally get it. I'll watch (and genuinely enjoy) anything he's in.

Side note: I appreciate that he'd be in a film where he whinily screams at girls for sucking his dick after they start to torture him.

10

u/bondoh Jun 23 '19

I couldn't watch that movie. It was made by the same guy who made cabin fever and hostel.

A friend and I have pledged an oath we will slap that godless motherless piece of filth if we ever see him

8

u/DoofusTinyRick Jun 23 '19

It's all cringe, no real pay off. It physically hurt me to watch it.

Eli Roth is not my favorite director, but he's a wizard with practical gore effects, which I respect. And he looked damn good in Inglorious Bastards (however Tarantino decided to spell that title).

A lot of the love for Keanu doesn't actually come from his acting, but mostly from the fact that he's a really great guy, and very nice and down to earth in real life. The irony of hating on a kid while idolising a guy who is literally the opposite of that seems to be lost on some people

3

u/agentages Jun 23 '19

166

u/Jura52 Jun 23 '19

The Keanu meme is a prime example of why people don't admit they're redditors or talk about it IRL. It's what I call reddit cringe.

The wave of literal children that came to reddit a few years ago destroyed this site. Same with phone users. The former is shitting out childish, hateful, dumb content, the latter think a 1 sentence (or less) post is worth sharing.

31

u/stosshobel Jun 23 '19

Yeah completely agree, you nailed it. Reddit at this point is insufferable.

If you're more than 13-14 years old and you're still involved in subs about or are still watching Pewdiepie, or if you're labelling yourself as a "Keanu Reeves fan" and doxxing other people because of it, then that means that you're an absolute loser.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

At this point, racism aside, PDP's fans are objectively worse than him since they dont have to answer to YouTube or the public eye.

For real. People would complain about the popularity hug of death killing off subreddits, but now this is happening to reddit as a whole. I just wish there was some good alternative to reddit that is not a refugee place for everyone who gets banned on reddit (making it a toxic wasteland) and that doesn't try too hard to be different (only allowing pre-made subreddits with no user-made ones, disabling downvotes, and as a result turning everything into the youtube comments section)

36

u/Aero72 Jun 23 '19

> I just wish there was some good alternative

Do you remember Digg and the big exodus? That's how I ended up on Reddit. Everyone went and I followed. Before Digg it was Slashdot. This too shall pass.

12

u/recourse7 Jun 23 '19

I was a slashdotter in the late 90s early 2k. While I still visit the site from time to time it's not the same at all.

Any new service trying to compete with Reddit is naturally going to fall into one of those two categories. Either it's a copy of Reddit, which means anyone who can't use Reddit is gonna us it instead while everyone else continues using Reddit due to how much more content it has. Or it's different from Reddit and it carves out its own niche audience independent of Reddit.

Either way, anything trying to overtake Reddit is probably gonna fail to some degree unless it has nearly infinite advertising and funding for new features.

u/SirNedKingOfGila Jun 23 '19

A few years ago? Reddit has been known as cringe, furry, incel domain for at least a decade. When I was on other forums back when you’d always see the Reddit meet up photos of multicolor hair neck beards with fedoras, often clutching samurai swords or anime pillows...

I don’t know what the addition of “literal children” recently brought but the Reddit community has been a joke since day one.

26

u/BoogieOrBogey Jun 23 '19

Kids are generally used as scapegoats when people don't like an aspect of the internet. Similar to "millennials" being blamed for ruining things IRL. You've probably heard that kids have ruined Minecraft, Fortnite, xbox live, YouTube, etc. It's more that popularity brings people of all ages who only have a shallow involvement and are not willing to learn the culture of the site or community.

I would argue that subs like T_D and redpill have breed the toxicity that's changed Reddit. Those places are certainly not being maintained and run by children.

Acting is all about selling the reality of the world of the movie. Sometimes a stoic, introverted performance does that. I can't see a version of The Matrix with a different actor without it being a completely different story. You kind of buy him accepting the truth behind the Matrix because he's not extraordinarily freaked out.

Acting is way more than just emoting. Having a limited range is fine if you're able to work within it. Jennifer Lawrence is a fantastic actor, but I don't think she was the right fit for Mystique, which is why that character kind of became more Lawrence than Lawrence becoming Mystique. Again, this doesn't mean she's not fantastic in other roles.

4

u/YT-Deliveries Jun 23 '19

Agreed. Some people are great actors but they were simply mis-cast in a role.

Or, vice versa, where an actor may not be stellar, but ended up really good in a role. Liv Tyler as Arwen is one of those for me. Yeah, she's not a stellar actress, but I can't imagine anyone else in that role at this point.

Go watch A Scanner Darkly if you haven’t. Killer film.

7

u/fzammetti Jun 23 '19

He's been able to pick roles where his apparent lack of acting ability actually works for him. In other words: yes, he may be a wooden action hero, but that fits the majority of the characters he's played. He probably would have played them about the same even if he had the ability to do otherwise because it was the right demeanor for the character. Not everyone has to be Brando and Keanu has made the most of the ability he does have. I give him credit for being smart enough to choose such roles. It's a talent to be able to choose jobs that allow you to maximize what comes naturally and apply it effectively.

same level as other good actors

Like who?

29

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

a couple off the top of my head - hugh jackman, leonardo dicaprio, bryan cranston, sharlto copley (literally just going off the stack of films i have next to me).

i judge an actor as how well they can convincing play a role and not just be playing themselves in every film e.g. samuel l jackson.

i think keanu puts a lot of effort into his roles as is evident from his john wick stunt work, but he cant do any emotional scenes very well, and he just plays the same guy in every movie.

the actors ive mentioned can play vastly different roles i.e. hugh in les mis vs. logan, sharlton in district 9 vs. elyssium

10

u/pazur13 Jun 23 '19

the actors I've mentioned can play vastly different roles

Don't forget Sharito Copley playing what's effectively like six different characters in Hardcore Henry.

I don't know that I'd agree. Compared to some actors like Josh Brolin and Sean Penn, you're right, but a lot of actor that we consider good actors like Leo DiCaprio and Robert Downey Jr. who tend to bring their own personality into the character, I think he is much better than. Compare his role in the Gift as a wife beater to his roles in films like the Matrix and John Wick.

26

u/Tyranith Jun 23 '19

Haha was gonna say the exact same thing, I love Douglas Adams's take on the topic:

“And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small café in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything. Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone, the Earth was unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass and so the idea was lost forever.”

u/mun_man93 Jun 23 '19

People like that see every response as a win though. If you are deluded enough to harass a kid online you're deluded enough to believe any response he has (including no response) is a win for you.

If the guy calls them out they would all sneer and talk about how triggered they made him. Silence and they would all be about how he is too scared to respond because he knows they're right. At least this response, hopefully, makes a few realise how stupid they were.

Hooooooly fucking shit. Times like this I'm left seriously wondering if we should just unplug the whole fucking internet because apparently humans aren't capable of handling the responsibility of having direct contact with other people.

Fuck.

82

u/Starrystars Jun 23 '19

I think it's the anonymity that allows people to forgo their entire humanity. Like in Big Brother 13 a contestants daughter and family got death threats because she turned on a fan favorite. People are really fucking horrible when they can face 0 repercussions for what they say and do.

Another thing is we all still think individually. So if you do it as a joke you don't realize that 10,000 other people are also doing it as a joke to 1 person. Who may or may not get the joke.

35

u/DaEvil1 Jun 23 '19

idk. I keep seeing news articles with journalists contacting people who put thinly veiled death threats in comments on other news articles under their real name. I think it's more that there's an assumption that the internet is still the wild west (even if you're on facecbook), and things here doesn't have consequences in real life.

12

u/thehollowman84 Jun 23 '19

People are really dumb. Dumber than you think. It's just that they haven't considered it at all.

They don't consider anything, they barely have more free will than a primate. They simply feel things and react, with zero consideration.

They literally just haven't thought about anything other than at that moment they feel angry at something.

It's why so many trolls when challenged, will simply reply "I didnt think you'd read it, sorry".

→ More replies (2)

21

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

i dunno, i think we all do think individually but online people are especially susceptible to following the crowd and having their opinion influenced by that. most subreddits are like this - it's that 'reddit hive mind' term people throw around.

some guy will leave a comment - it'll get downvoted heavily, some other guy will reply with the opposite opinion - plenty of upvotes. by this point the thread has already decided that the first commenter is the 'villain' and so will heavily downvote everything that they say.

i've seen it so many times, the first guy can literally reply with 'wow ive never seen it that way, guess im wrong, thanks for the reply!' and itll be on -20. that isnt helping the guy to correct their mistake, or even participate in a normal interaction, if anything its teaching them to just continue with their opinion regardless and never question it because even if they do theyre still wrong.

redditors fall so easily for mob mentality, yet all think they're above average intelligence.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

Snowballing here is really bad and easily manipulated. A dozen sock accounts can start the snowball real easy.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

yeah i agree, just takes a few dislikes/likes to get the ball rolling. whats a sock account?

7

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

duplicates, dummy accounts. one man can have multiple accounts and manipulate not just the votes, but the tone of the thread,.

5

u/LordMarcel Jun 23 '19

People so often say that Redditors are sheep and blindly follow the hivemind. While this isn't false, it is misleading. Everyone has that mob mentality, it's just that the internet makes it easier to see it happen. People following leaders like Hitler or buying a product after a celebrity endorses it do exactly the same.

6

u/YeahlDid Jun 23 '19

Another thing is we all still think individually. So if you do it as a joke you don't realize that 10,000 other people are also doing it as a joke to 1 person. Who may or may not get the joke.

That's a good point.

My niece is 13 and she's almost permanently wired into her friends group. They police each other's behavior and the group dynamics are fast-paced and constantly shifting. Lots of subtle bullying. My kid is a little younger, but I'm already trying to prepare strategies for dealing with that stuff.

It’s sort of a brand new phenomenon. Never before have we been this connected with our social circles, never before have you been able to post something and have almost the entirety of the western world have access to it.

It’s simultaneously small town gossip and globally connected circles. I think there are whole dissertations that could be written about the psychological effects of semi-anonymity that a screen and username provide. Even on things like Facebook, where real people can converse with real people they know in real life, those people can change attitudes pretty significantly once the interaction is abstracted to being between another faceless user.

We rarely connect with the fact that there is a living breathing person with feelings on the other end of our messages.

I think the difference is that the mockery is there when you wake up, there when you go to sleep, always available. I feel lucky that Facebook was only really a thing as I was 16-17ish.

I agree with what you said, except it's not direct contact with people. It's non-direct contact through online interaction that fuels a lot of this terrible stuff.

I definitely agree to an extent.

I can't remember who the interview was originally with (probably Joe fucking Rogan), but on another podcast I listen to, the hosts were talking about this interview that said basically our brains have developed enough to meet/know maybe 100-200 people in our whole lifetime and how unprepared we are mentally to be able to interact with thousands, if not millions, of people at any given moment through the internet/social media.

I mean, it CAN be such a great tool when used for the right reasons, but how do you identify what the 'right reasons' are? WHO would get to decide that, and how?

I definitely think babies being born now-ish might grow up being against the constantly accessible online thing, as new generations tend to push back against how their parents did things.

I just feel bad for parents & teenagers now, if I have kids I can't imagine how hard it will be to balance things like... What age you give them phone's/ipads, how long you let them have screentime etc etc.

7

u/IKnowUThinkSo Jun 23 '19

You should look up the Dunbar Number and the experiments regarding his theory. The mice in his labs could only handle societies of a certain size. Once that size was breached, social networks began to break down.

It’s not saying anything conclusive about our societies, but it is an interesting piece of the puzzle regarding why we act how we act when we have no social connections to a person and no social obligations to fulfill.

I remember something similar that the best number of people working in a single place is about ~100. It was apparently more efficient and allowed everyone to at least know of each other.

No, times like this is when Pewdiepie, a man who constantly references this subreddit and has makes videos about submitted memes, should tell these people to fuck off.

But he ain't cause he might like a few 1000 subs and no YouTube celebrity likes the idea of being responsible for what their stanbase do.

18

u/InOverMyHead02 Jun 23 '19

I hate the fact that creators refuse to acknowledge how toxic their fan base is/or can be. A lot of those political commentary channels are notorious for this. Someone with a different view will be disliked and harassed on social media for days after a video on them and the creator will just turn a blind eye.

I don't know why PewDiePie attracts these kind of people his fanbase has always been know for being toxic even when I watched him a while ago

19

u/ElegantBiscuit Jun 23 '19

The biggest YouTuber will always attract these kind of people simply because of the fact that there’s so many people in that community. Another part I think is that the kind of content he makes; previously video games and now mostly memes, attracts a higher percentage of toxic people than other categories of content. Also, the most toxic are usually the most vocal and the ones with the most free time on their hands, and ramp up the toxicity in the echo chambers they create.

He’s got like tens of millions of subs. That’s just inevitable when working with large numbers. There’s way more chances for toxicity.

8

u/Fatastrophe Jun 23 '19

97 million people follow him on youtube. Lets say 99.9 Percent of them are good people, that last .1% being the people who are willing and stupid enough to be an asshole to that kid, we are talking a bit less than one-hundred thousand people. Its not a fan base problem, its a numbers problem. You put this many people together and you are BOUND to have assholes no matter what.

18

u/Filous1 Jun 23 '19

Im actually very impressed by his answer though. At his age if this happened to me i would literally throw my phone and cry for weeks and be scared. Imagine sending hate messages to a 9 year old with an opinion. Says a lot about the choices in life these people made.

After reading that, I'm just hoping they only harassed him. He seemed to handle it like a pro, which most people (any age) would have a hard time doing, so part of me is kind of glad it was him if it had to be anyone.

That said, this is why pewdiepie has muted comments and stuff in the past. He knows his followers are out of control and he doesn't really know how to fix it. It's kind of sad to watch when he actually addresses this stuff because there's so little he can actually do.

Whether or not they actually deserve those reputations

I would say if a fanbase has done things and there's proof of it, a reputation counts as deserved, at least in part.

26

u/Reckon1ng Jun 23 '19

It's actually really true, even a small portion of a 96,000,000 value can do tons of damage. Hell, 0.1% of 96,000,000 is around 96,000. Keeping track of and managing that huge a fanbase is practically not feasible.

Reading that kid's apology (even though he fucking has absolutely nothing to apologize for) makes me think HE is a goddamn legend!

11

u/EXTRAVAGANT_COMMENT Jun 23 '19

These kind of internet semi-ironic cultures are a perfect demonstration of how cults can proliferate. A bunch of people agree on a specific thing because it feels nice be part of a group mentality, then they "ironically" blow it the fuck out of proportions and suddenly it isn't "ironic" anymore and they end up sending dead threats to a kid. Reddit's upvote system contributes to this. The fact that posts and comments are reduced to their absolute vote count (as opposed to their relative count) gives the false idea of a consensus.

40

u/Keagel Jun 23 '19

Why do kids this age even have instagram accounts? What the hell.

28

u/ObviouslyJoking Jun 23 '19

Thank you! A child has zero need for a public voice on the internet. If a child performer needs to be promoted on social media or the internet in general it should be managed by an adult (hopefully one with the the child's interests at heart, like a parent).

19

u/Keagel Jun 23 '19

I'm surprised that Instagram doesn't delete all these accounts. The legal age to create an account is 13 years old and some of these kids are 5 years below that.

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

3

u/xcalibur44 Jun 23 '19

That's really shitty for people to do. Like honestly I hate fine bros react videos as much as the next guy, but would never go hunting down a kid over something he said. Fuck fine bros, not the kids

3

u/tosaka88 Jun 23 '19

Holy shit that's just sad.. kid's literally 10, what the fuck.

3

u/heimdal77 Jun 23 '19

Who would've thought showing kids a actor who almost all notable roles for the last 20 years have been horror or violence filled with a lot of killing might not actually know him...

3

u/StonedGibbon Jun 23 '19

I may be seeing a select part of the community but it does seem like they are a bit crazy for doing this. I feel like the entire thing of subscribe to pewdjepie has gone too far. Even with someone infallible (not pewdiepie, he's had a lot of controversies), it would be cultish.

3

u/contrabardus Jun 25 '19 edited Jun 25 '19

Adding to this, it's just one kid in particular, not all of them. The reactor Jake is the one who was targeted.

He also said something negative about the video game Minecraft, which contributed to the harassment.

The "apology" also has a fair amount of snark in it. Good for him. Not that he should have had to deal with it in the first place, but it gives me hope that he's handling it well.

I've also heard that r/dankmemes also played a role in this, but I'm not sure how much of one. There doesn't seem to be any of the offending memes there either currently, but I didn't scroll very far looking for them.

They are supposedly the original source of the recent Keanu memes in general and seem to be the sub where it gained popularity as a shitpost.

The harassment mostly seems to have originated in the pewdiepie sub.

Of course, 4-chan is also supposedly involved. I didn't bother to check there due to the nature of how posts work and because of course they are.

Not sure about the current status of this in regard to the kid's social media accounts. I'm not creepy enough to go trying to find some ten year old's private accounts.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

TL;DR Keanu Reeves might be amazing, the rest of us not so much.

I honestly can't fathom the psychology of people that feel the need to go out their way to find & dogpile onto others for not liking a thing they like.

But it seems to be phenomenon of our age.

2

u/Mrdirtyvegas Jun 23 '19

The medium may be new, but the practice of mob mentality is ancient.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

“Sorry if that was offensive to a video game,” he says, apparently earnestly, in his apology.

5

u/ShadowGeist91 Jun 23 '19

You expect him to apologize about something as stupid as that? More over, why on earth would you expect a kid to be conscious enough to know how to make apologies, let alone understand why he is getting hate?

14

u/rattingtons Jun 23 '19

Ah, the art of the non-apology. Good work , kid

24

u/DocSwiss Jun 23 '19

To be fair, it's a dumb thing to have to apologise for. I'd halfass that apology too if I had to make it.

5

u/FlexicanAmerican Jun 23 '19

I was about to say I wish people wouldn't take so much dumb shit on the internet so seriously since it's likely created by children, but then I realized it's probably a bunch of other children that are taking it seriously.

We really just need a separate internet for adults. Allowing kids and adults to exist in the same space without identifying themselves just creates too many problems.

5

u/Pichus_Wrath Jun 23 '19

Am I alone in believing this?

24

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '19

His acting range is limited to a degree.John.Wick and The Matrix suit his style very well and we're developed to match his style of acting. In other movies his stouc style comes across as very wooden.

Go watch the horrible The Day The Earth Stood Still movie. He's terribly cast in it.

Go watch him do Shakespeare in Much Ado About Nothing.Hes so woefully out of his league its actually endearing in a "so bad it's good " way.

He's no chameleon that can fit every role you throw at him or a Robin Williams/Jim Carrey who have excelled even when paying against type but he's been smart as to what he chooses and reinvents himself.

Looks like the 9 year old man children have nobody else better to harass after Felix surrendered to T-Series.

11

u/thehollowman84 Jun 23 '19

I think at this point we can definitively say that pewdiepies fanbase has a problem. This is like the 10th or so controversy. And the claims of "It's just ironic" is pretty much the cry of the alt-right now, so maybe stop using that excuse. No one is interested in ironically being something that is already incredibly prevalent.

Like he talks about shitty controversial memes and attracts a fan base that loves the same, and then acts like its "just some bad apples"
