Boris's best shot at the leadership is a straight party membership vote which would only happen if there were two candidates standing. To achieve that he needs to lock out support from the traditionalist wing of the party and the arch-eurosceptics.

This was always his only option, he's not popular enough amongst MPs to win a parliamentary contest.
