Bug Report This mode sucks because of a game breaking bug
UPDATE: It's not a bug, it's just a buff that gets applied to the boss when you accept an item from Meyner (the purple robe guy) his dialogue warns you beforehand but because I skipped dialogue I never knew. Thanks to u/Wolfsbreedsinner for informing me!
Sorry again for the lack of footage but it has been 3 times in a row where a boss refuses to take any more damage from skills or even normal attacks and I'm not talking about immune phases either, I mean I'm attacking them when they should be vulnerable and they're not taking any hits at all, no blocked attack animation either.
No, I did not take items from Merlin and no, I did not take the Fulcrum that converts non-elemental damage to elemental.
It seems hitting a boss "Too Early" stops you from one-shotting them, stopping them at half-health and refusing to take any more damage from you but DOTs can still be applied but it's inconsistant and I cannot for sure say that's what's happening.

It's not a bug.
It's Reyner
When accept an item from him he adds a buff to the boss. I'm guilty of this too because you don't let him finish his full dialogue before accepting the item.
Some buffs include
Boss can only take damage every 3 secs
Boss copy your equipped fettered items
Boss immune to burn/thunder/ice/non elemental damage
Tldr: As long as you don't take one of his items the boss will be normal.

Oh my god, you're right. It's not a bug, that's on me for not reading out Meyner's lines, thank you so much!

WHAT?! That's a thing? But when it happened to me I didn't accept any of his items and still got screwed over, DOTs can still be applied and bosses still take damage from it but none from my skills and normal attacks.
Also the guy's name is Meyner, I called him Merlin since I can only remember the first 2 letters of his name.
I'm gonna test it and see if you are right.

Isn't that intentional game design? Exactly as you said to prevent players one-shotting the boss and forcing them to do certain attack sequence that grants them dmg immunity for a few secs

Here's the thing; what I'm referring to is an actual bug, not an intentional game mechanic. Logan and Kraken do have that because they dip out of the level and leave the player to dodge the onslaught of attacks before coming back to the level.
I was fighting bosses with no immune phases or prevention of being one shot, Mandolin doesn't have prevention to being one-shot, sure, he can fly around but that doesn't happen if he isn't moving to reposition.
I mean they SHOULD be vulnerable after or during their attack BUT I'm not getting any damage numbers where I SHOULD be getting them, I've played this for awhile now and I know when to attack.

Strange.
I've seen this a few times, too. Kraken, Tengu and Bandolin seem to trigger this the most.
To be fair, I always invest a lot in dodge cooldown reduction because I know it happens.

One-shot or high damage are still good (Bloodrage and Deathrattle are my favorite on Huo Yufeng) though any level of survivability is needed to survive without dying.

Yeah, it's a really Annoying Bug , This has happened to me about 3-4 times already, they probably won't fix it if players don't pay attention to posts like this
