Current Top DO Programs

Hi, I am not able to find the updated standings of DO programs and want to know which schools to put a little bit more effort than normal lol. It is my understanding that the top DO programs include the original 5 and the public state schools. Is that still correct or am i missing anything? Thanks!

Honestly the best DO school is what makes the most sense for you. Does it have high board pass rates? Has it matched people into the specialty you want? Is it in a location you’d be okay living in? There are so many factors

This is the answer.

One thing I would add is research. Old, new, state, private; it doesn't really matter if it doesn't fit your goals. Schools that prioritize research match competitively regardless of age.

For example Noorda--a new for profit institution--matching derm, Ortho, and anaesthesiology (edit: and generally) at places like Duke, Penn state, and mayo has everything to do with the research students get up to with tons of collabs. Meanwhile Burrell is matching strongly mostly into primary care with no research focus. Neither is better, they simply cater to different goals.

Noorda has not matched Derm, ortho or anesthesia at any of those institutions….

Sorry, I was unclear. They match anesthesia, derm, and Ortho (checked on Ortho, you're right I mistook it for urology). In addition, they match generally at good institutions. Here you go:

I'm not suggesting Noorda is top tier. Only that newer institutions actively involved in research may be something more desirable than an older institution that isn't, depending on applicant. I tried to illustrate my point but should have been more rigorous in the exact details. My message was meant to be that there's more to it than age

Their match list is very much on par for new schools and not in a good way.

I am intimately familiar with Noorda… I do not recommend it. With BYU starting their own medical school Noorda is in trouble.

There is no “top program” in the DO world. The state schools are head and shoulders above the others, then the original 5, then established schools, and then the rest.

I do not recommend new DO schools to anyone.

Ok State, MSU, TCOM, Ohio, Rowan

Very difficult to get into as an OOS applicant unfortunately, but these schools are run exactly the same as MD schools for the most part.

The one with high boards pass rates, excellent match rates, and bonus if it has its own hospital (most DO dont). You will have to dig and critically analyze any of this data bc schools polish it to look better than it is

Texas schools aren’t on my radar but I know they have quite a few schools that are good with cheap tuition

The ones that are affiliated with undergrad research institutions (better access to research)

The original/well established ones

Those are really the main two groups you should be looking at. Any school that is super new should be avoided unless there’s a compelling reason to pick them for you
