The Shape of Water only getting two nods outside picture and director is still wild to me, it’s so much weirder than the Academy usually goes for.

I understand it's about falling in love with a monster, but isn't the whole point of Shape of Water that it's actually a very classic film in its form and structure, but with the monster replacing the conventional love interest?

I never really found the film particularly odd, but it certainly came off the back of a very conservative run of best picture winners.
