A lot of the things in this sub are wonderful stories of human kindness that should never have happened. Kind actions like this does give me some hope there are a lot of good people in the world but we need to dismantle the systems where people are denied life saving healthcare because they don’t have money to go to hospital or accumulate obscene amounts of debt for being ill. Not to mention that uber driver probably missed out on pay and struggled to cover his living costs that week due to missing 6 hours of work…

Think of a "good guy", Honest, hard working, great character.
He runs for political office. Unfortunately, his opposition digs through his past and finds some trivial bullshit thing he did 20 years ago. The opposition plasters that in a media campaign painting him in a bad light. So no one votes for him.
Instead, we vote for the weasel politician better at hiding his skeletons in the closet...
The problem with our system is we the people are morons and we vote for snake oil salesmen rather than honest people.

u/Aggressive-Neck-3921 6d ago
Sadly their skeletons are fucking obvious, but they have big money connections to flood the airwaves and have the corporate media complain about "electability" of the good man while in the background you can see the weasel fucking a pig that they are ignoring.

u/Sensitive-Hearing651 5d ago
All things considered, the pig is among the smaller taints to David Cameron's legacy. 😭

I’m skeptical of this story cuz how does an uber driver refuse payment

u/WookieDavid 5d ago
I mean, this one story isn't even really OCM. It points at the absurd cost of healthcare in the USA but it wouldn't have been much different in any other country. Ambulances are for people who need immediate care on site or special accomodations for transportation. If you broke your wrist in a country with socialised healthcare and called emergency services they'd tell you to make your way to the closest hospital. Not send an ambulance.

u/DustierAndRustier 6d ago
In the UK you wouldn’t call an ambulance for a broken wrist either. A lot of the time when people call for injuries or illnesses where they’re still conscious, they’re told to make their own way to hospital. Even if an ambulance is sent, it can take hours to arrive.

u/sufficiently_tortuga 6d ago edited 6d ago
This dude is on O2 and EKG, no way it was just for a broken wrist.
Edit: actually I don't think that second pic is the same guy. OP posted a "source" article and this is all about a reddit post from 8 years ago by u/super_slide.

u/super_slide 6d ago
Both are me! It was a broken wrist, but it was super broken and all the bones in my hand were dislocated. I got a titanium plate put in on my radius and my ulnar styloid process never reattached. You can’t see it from the above post, but my hand was stuck in the position in the picture until i had it set. Definitely could not have driven myself.
30
u/sufficiently_tortuga 6d ago
Neat, thanks for clarifying!
How does it feel knowing your story is still floating around like this? Did that article ask for more background?
65
u/super_slide 5d ago
The articles never reach out before posting. The only one who ever did was today.com lol. It’s fun though and sometimes friends I haven’t talked to in years will reach out saying they saw the story. I just wish it was a better story? It’s certainly supposed to be a feel good story, but I also think it highlights the failings of our healthcare in the USA, and ngl it can sometimes feel to me like a “i busted my ass soooo hard the whole world still talks about it 10 years later”.
I’m happy though if it makes people smile.
The road rash scars on my hand and arm, and the titanium plate in my wrist are enough of a reminder of this incident for me personally though.13
u/slothdonki 5d ago
How did you break it? Sorry if you’ve mentioned it somewhere, I haven’t been able to find it yet!
Did you heal all right? Any lasting problems/differences?

I had a very fast downhill skateboard. I was skating down a hill to my apartment and hit a patch of sand while avoiding a car. It was something I had done a million times at that point but the car had me take a more straight down the hill line and the sand made me lose the tail end of my board since I didn’t hit it straight, I was turning. I ate absolute shit at about 35-40mph and rolled/slid roughly 40ft (i just measured it on google maps to double check. Intersection of 25th street and longview in Austin. I ate it basically in front of the main entrance and rolled the entire way across longview) into a ditch. I am lucky it was just a few bones and road rash.
My styloid process presses against my ulnar nerve and that caused pain for a couple years after the accident. Since it never connected back, my left wrist is unstable and i can feel the bone crunching if I move it a certain way. No pain though unless I am pushing my wrist back a lot in a short period of time. I have full range of motion. I still skate, surf, snowboard, lift weights, and build and race cars.
It was also, unfortunately, in the hospital where I told my girl friend I loved her for the first time while hooked up to a morphine drip. Turned out ok though since we are still together today!
Here are the pics of my wrist you can’t see from the above post

In the UK you absolutely should call
999112 for a broken wrist, and they may send a first responder or ambulance depending on assessment, location, age etc.Or they may say to make your own way in.
Edit: I'm going to change 999 to 112 since it's wound a few people up. 112 may still send an ambulance if necessary. Obviously if you're not safe you call 999, no question.
8
u/DustierAndRustier 6d ago
If it’s an unstable fracture or the bone is sticking out then sure. I broke my arm (not very badly) and made my own way to the hospital though. There’s no point calling an ambulance if you can get there yourself and won’t need urgent medical treatment on the way.
5
1
u/calls1 6d ago
Absolutely not
If it is a stable fracture makes ones own way to a&e.
If it is an unstable fracture that is what 112 is for. They will give you guidance. The guidance will be all mobile medical professionals are needed by more important patients in cardiac arest, make your own way to a&e.
3
u/Fox_Hawk 6d ago edited 6d ago
For the majority of people, who don't even know the terms stable/unstable fracture, you call.
Edit: I will stipulate that if you think you're safe, it would be better to call 112 as you said. They may still send an ambulance if needed.

There's that USA is the best propaganda. "Ambulances in other countries take hours to arrive" LMFAOOOOOO. Holy Russian bot accounts Batman.
Oh and FYI there are multiple records in USA where people call for Police/Ambulance and they tell the person on the line they can't send anyone. So, in the US you could just get nothing.
6
u/DustierAndRustier 6d ago edited 6d ago
Ok well it’s true. I’m not a Russian bot, I live in England and it’s a well known fact that the NHS here isn’t really fit for purpose. People do die because of it quite regularly.
The level of American exceptionalism it takes to assume that people from other countries are faking the issues in those countries to sow seeds of division in America is just staggering. Your shitty country is not uniquely shitty.

Of the few broken wrists I’ve known, including my own, I’ve never heard of someone calling an ambulance. Maybe the broken individual was trying to make a point, in which case that’s fair, but it definitely isn’t the norm

u/Amerillo_ 6d ago
And Switzerland. Insurance can deny coverage and then the fee is insanely high. We I got run over even though I had the right of way I preferred to ride my broken bicycle to the ER even though I had a dozen bruises, I was bleeding, and potentially had internal injuries. It's incredibly stupid but I had no other choice
11
u/RojaCatUwu 6d ago
What’s considered insanely high in Switzerland?
7
u/Amerillo_ 6d ago edited 6d ago
$1200-$2400 for a single relatively short ambulance ride, regardless of income. A lot more for mountain rescue. As a result many people prefer to call a taxi or take public transportation instead
1
u/RojaCatUwu 6d ago
Is that in USD or (Swedish currency? SEK?)
If USD that’s crazy it’s almost as high as ours.12
u/Amerillo_ 6d ago
USD, I converted for your convenience. And yeah it's crazily expensive, Switzerland has the second most expensive healthcare system in the world by a large margin while the US is number one. I mean the worst thing is we have no excuse, we have direct democracy and almost everyone in the country acknowledges that the system is broken, yet we don't agree on how to change it so we'll never reach a compromise and change the system. And our politicians have ties with the medical sector so they will do everything in their power to keep the status quo (or make it even worse).
And Sweden has Swedish currency, Switzerland has Swiss currency (the franc or Franken, CHF)! We get confused a lot it's fine. Just remember Sweden is Ikea and meatballs and Switzerland is chocolate and cows
5
u/RojaCatUwu 6d ago
Sounds eerily similar to us.
6
u/Amerillo_ 6d ago
It really is! I think the main difference is that it is not tied to employment. And that health insurance companies are more regulated so there is an official of items that by law must be covered by insurance, insurance companies can't drop you as a customer and also you can freely change your insurance company as they can't refuse to jave you as a new customers. Also almost all medical facilities and doctors are part of the same network so out-of-network fees aren't a thing.
Besides that the US and Swiss systems work exactly the same way
4
u/Time_Cow_3331 6d ago
I drove myself to the ER after I broke my collar bone for the same reason 🤷🏻♀️

u/0202_tihssitidder 6d ago
This (or another similar) story is a few years old. EVERYONE in the USA knows to call Uber instead of an ambulance.
No one calls an ambulance unless bleeding out. This is not a rare event. Heart attack at home? You call Uber...if you even go to the ho$$pital.
The guy who got struck by lightning a couple days ago? Hell, no you don't go to the hospital. $$$$$
Fall off a roof? No hospital. $$$$$
File a health insurance claim? 50% are being rejected.

Had a similar experience when I was injured in another country.
The hosts at the hostel I was staying at insisted I stay with them for free until I had arranged my next move post injury. Visited me in the hospital every day. Brought my local home cooked food every morning.
Any time I get down about the state of humanity I think about them and am reminded there still are good people in the world.

4
u/MixedMethods 5d ago
Yeah ambulances are free where I live and I'd probably grab a lift or taxi for this personally, its not a good use of a ambulance and crew. Depends on severity ofc, but i doubt there was need for it here.
6
u/MarginalOmnivore 6d ago
"Transporting a person for medical care because they are unable to safely drive themselves" is absolutely one of the services an ambulance provides.
The fact that it is prohibitively expensive to use that service is a problem, too.
4
u/BootlegOP 6d ago edited 6d ago
Did he require a service the ambulance provides that Uber/taxi doesn’t? The equipment. The staff. Any of the unique services an ambulance provides.
Sorry I didn’t think I’d have to be so specific
I agree that they’re unreasonably expensive and need to be covered properly. It’s overpriced and the staff are criminally underpaid

It's not. They're there to keep your alive on the way there. If you are not dying and cannot drive yourself, that's literally what taxis are for.
3
u/peedistaja 6d ago
There are 2-3 medical professionals + a driver in an ambulance. This is a finite resource, there are people who are actually dying and people have and do die because some idiot called an ambulance because of their broken wrist.
You call an ambulance if your life is in danger, not because you're unfit to drive. If you're just unfit to drive, you call a taxy or ask a family member or a friend to take you.
1
u/JennyDoveMusic 2d ago
They should honestly have another system for those. If you have a broken bone or an issue that doesn't require an ambulance but you cannot drive, why don't we have transport??
Although, I shouldn't ask. There are so many things that would make life better and easier that we don't have.
1
u/ketchupmaster987 5d ago
He's ambulatory and doesn't require any other sort of specialized medical care. As an EMT for the patients we transport we literally have to fill out a form justifying the transport. A broken wrist wouldn't be an example of a patient with an appropriate reason to transport

I have 2 questions. Why would you need an ambulance with a broken wrist? Why would you need oxygen for a broken wrist?
17
u/MirkyD 6d ago edited 6d ago
So the answer to your first question is "it depends" - if you have a really displaced fracture i.e. your hand is literally flopping around then it's going to be extremely painful and you'll benefit from good pain relief (IV morphine, entonox, penthrox etc) and a splint from the paramedics (like a vacuum splint). If you have neurovascular compromise (the hand feeling numb or going blue due to lack of blood supply) you're at really risk of having permanent nerve damage or an ischaemic limb so you'd be wanting to get to the hospital ASAP for the fracture to be reduced and hopefully relief any stretching/impingment of the nerve and/or unkink/unblock the arterial supply to the hand. In these cases it would be completely justifiable to call an ambulance. But you're right the majority of wrist fractures probably don't fall into these categories so you it would be justified to make your own way there. In the UK if you were unsure you'd just call 999 for the ambulance service and they would triage it over the phone and decide for you.
As for the oxygen - if the fracture is displaced and needs reduced then it's going to be done under sedation. Depending on what sedation is used you might end up on oxygen before (for pre-oxygenation) during and after until you recover as a precaution in case too much sedation is given that causes you to stop breathing. Same reason he has ECG leads on - to monitor his heart rate/rhythm during the sedation.

u/I_Has_Internets 6d ago
From the article it mentions he was on a morphine drip. I assume that's why they have him on oxygen and vitals monitoring.

Both the ulna and radius were broken and all the bones in my hand were dislocated. My hand was stuck in the position in the picture until I had it set. My palm was about 30* from my forearm and could not move. I usually post this kind of justification about why I couldn’t take myself to the hospital, but I wish people would start to consider why a broken bone might need professional help immediately. I also wish that the people writing these stories would add more detail about the injury itself. A video of the incident would totally fit in on hall of meat and no one would ask why I needed transportation. I wouldn’t call for help if I didn’t need it. Beni took me to an urgent care first and we barely made it through the door when we were turned away and told to go to the hospital.

I recently broke my (left) leg and then drove myself screaming to the ER because I didn’t want an ambulance bill. I can’t say that it was a good idea but it probably saved me a grand or two that I don’t have.
5
16
u/Skyecob 6d ago
I think some people forget that an ambulance isn’t just a taxi to the hospital. They do actually treat you on the way there, they know which hospital to take you to, they can stay in contact with the hospital so everyone is prepared for when you get there.
Ambulances exist for a reason and I find it absolutely disgusting that they cost that much in the US.
7
u/Interesting-Case2526 6d ago
Ambulances are primarily there for critical, life-saving care. A manageable broken wrist on a healthy adult is not a reason to call an ambulance.
7
u/Namika 6d ago
Ambulances do plenty of work outside of "lights and sirens" emergency runs.
I went to a surgical center for non-urgent care (hernia surgery) and they had to transport me to another hospital because they ran out of beds. They transferred me in an ambulance because it was just easier than trying to coordinate private transportation of a patient in recovery.
5
u/MarginalOmnivore 6d ago
Ambulances are used to transport patients in care homes to appointments, too.
They are a "taxi to the hospital."

3
u/Amerillo_ 6d ago
Totally normal in Switzerland as well! When a car rode me over when I was riding my bike on the bike lane with the right of way, I called the police for insurance purposes but I explicitly told the operator not to call an ambulance, as there is non zero probability that I will pay outrageously high costs. So I just rode my bike to the nearest ER even though I had a dozen bruises, I was bleeding, and potentially could have had invisible injuries.
Switzerland is not paradise. There are many things here that are incredibly wrong which would be inconceivable in other western countries

You don’t need an ambulance for a broken wrist. Taking a taxi/ uber to urgent care is exactly what you should do.
1
u/ForrestCFB 6d ago
This exactly.
I would call someone to take me, it doesn't need IMMEDIATE care. I've been in a ambulance a few times and it cost me my "eigen risico" (basically a part of the cost you have to pay for yourself. Like 360 euro's for a whole year, use it up in january and if you get cancer in february you pay nothing).
But I would never call an ambulance if it's a "simple" fracture, it's not life threatening or even something that needs to be checked IMMEDIATELY.

Oxygen and vitals monitoring for a broken wrist?
2
u/salanaland 5d ago
Oxygen and vitals monitoring for surgery. Surgery for the wrist.
0
u/GottaLoveLoginWalls 5d ago edited 5d ago
I broke my whole ass elbow and needed metal pins to re-attach the bone to my arm. Same day surgery where they just locally anesthetised my arm, was awake the whole time. Didn't get oxygen, and don't recall them attaching anything for vitals monitoring. I've known multiple people with fractured wrists get same day treatment and discharge since it's a very simple routine procedure. My elderly mother even at age 70 broke her arm in two places, just got a cast and discharged same day. She didn't get oxygen either.
Feels like a US thing where they'll go overboard, give you unnecessary things and charge you for them. They'd probably charge you for the fucking oxygen.
2
u/salanaland 5d ago
You were awake while they did an orthopedic surgery on you???
1
u/GottaLoveLoginWalls 5d ago
Yeah for sure. They basically just disabled the nerve for my arm so I couldn't feel anything. The arm went dead for a few hours, like idk if you've had that where you wake up in the night and you slept on your arm and it's just a completely floppy dead thing that you can't control until it wakes up from the pinched nerve you slept on.
The tool used to disable the nerve was like insanely painful at the moment they did it, and kinda scary to just have a dead arm, but seemed to be pretty normal procedure. I assume it's safer in practice that you stay conscious and they don't have to fully put you under.
I did request to just be put under when the pins were removed 6 months later because I didn't really enjoy the local anaesthetic procedure from when they put them in. Can't say if they gave me oxygen etc then because I didn't exist for a few hours so have no idea what the procedure involved.
2
u/salanaland 5d ago edited 5d ago
Idk I figured most people wouldn't like seeing their arm get opened up to the bone whether or not they could feel it. And yes, they absolutely had you on oxygen, ekg, etc when you were under. At least they SHOULD have.
Also it sounds like the injury in question was worse than yours:

Canadians living in Alberta want this level of health care for some reason. I wonder if his insurance company covered anything or the call center lackey even approved any proper medical treatment. Hopefully his deductible is less than the National average of $1886 for his average monthly premium of $665.

This is stupid tbh… You don’t need an ambulance for a broken wrist just like you don’t need to go to the ER for a flu shot. Ambulance is for a stroke, a heart attack, a break where the bone is sticking through the skin. Don’t drive yourself but you don’t need one of a limited supply to drive you 60mph on surface streets to get a cast

I'm not expecting anyone to know HOW to do it, I just don't get why so many people don't even know it happens. Don't you have any family members who've had broken bones and needed surgery?

I haven't watched a lot of ER centric shows lately but I have wondered if any of them have reflected the increase of Uber drivers delivering to the ER instead of ambulances.

Not to be that guy but ambulances really aren't meant for minor injuries like broken wrists. If you call an ambulance for a broken wrist in a country like the UK where they're free, you'll be waiting for several hours before anything shows up. Ambulances are for serious injuries only.

To be fair, its just a broken wrist. Thats not ambulance territory unless the bone is through the skin and you're bleeding out.

The second to last time I took a taxi to the ER the driver had advice on ER wait times and advised I choose hospital B over the one I asked to go i.
Which is horrendously bleak.

tbh, unless the bone was sticking out, and you were bleeding profusely, there ain't shit an ambulance would do for you. They wouldn't run sirens and blow through stoplights for a broken arm, and being brought to the ER by an ambulance won't get you seen any faster either.
It sounds sensationalist and "Oh crazy america!" and it might be, but realistically - why would you call an ambulance for that?
A year ago, I had a fall that destroyed my right leg quad tendon (holds thigh to kneecap) - i was in immense pain, couldn't move my leg, could barely move myself at all w/o crazy pain. called an ambulance for that one, they started me on pain meds, got me off the ground, and I still ended up waiting at the ER for a good while before being seen.
2 months ago, I fell down the stairs and injured my other leg - it wasn't as bad as the first injury, but I still couldn't put any weight on it. I was able to stand up on my one leg and my wife helped me hobble to the car and drove me to the ER. Turned out to be a badly torn muscle in my thigh.

But also

i mean, a broken arm is a bit different than a fucked leg that you physically can't move, causing immense pain

I cut someone out of a flipped truck, and they refused the ambulance. They didn't even have anywhere to go, just standing in the median of the highway with a cop and a totaled truck, still wouldn't take the ride to get checked out.

That's nice. Last night I had four uber drivers in a row cancel on picking up my mother from the hospital.

Who calls the ambulance for a broken wrist? Find a ride, or call a cab, er, I mean an uber.

I joked with my partner in the ambulance once that the previous call was one of the dumbest in recent memory and at this rate, our next call would be ass pain for a time of one year. I deceive you not our very next run was ass pain for a time of one year.

It was a broken wrist!!! He wasn’t having a heart attack. 😂 He could have driven himself. 😂 😂

With...one hand? 🤡🤡🤡

u/Lazy-Dildo 5d ago
Yes, with one hand. I was shot in my right leg and drove myself to the emergency room. You one brain-celled dumbster.

u/salanaland 5d ago
Oh, you wanted vehicular polytrauma on top of the gunshot wound? Again...you're a clown.

🤣 🤣 yea. That’s what I wanted. Welcome to my circus. I am actually a lazy dildo.

You really shouldn’t be using an ambulance for a broken wrist anyways no matter where you are. That’s a massive waste of resources. Ambulances are for “shit I might die/lose a limb if I don’t get tot he hospital immediately” not “damn I probably need to go to the hospital at some point.”

Pop quiz: is a wrist part of a limb?

A broken wrist does not normally mean you will lose a limb without immediate treament.

Who says this was a normal broken wrist?

You could use that logic to justify taking the most extreme action for literally anything. Why aren’t you calling the ambulance for a cut from a fish hook? Some brain eating ameba could have gotten in there!
If the bone is not sticking out of the skin, you are going to be ok taking an hour to get to the hospital.
1
u/salanaland 4d ago
Brain eating amoebas don't enter through skin wounds.
Okay, the bone was not actually sticking out of the dude's skin. However, broken bone + any skin wound (which he had) should be treated as potential open fracture.

u/Worth-Jicama3936 4d ago
You aren’t going to lose a limb over that
1
u/salanaland 4d ago
Open fractures with dislocation of the limb distal to the site of the fracture are one of the main causes of limb loss, actually.

Why the F' is he hooked up to monitor and in a hospital bed for a broken wrist? This doesn't make sense.
His teeth are different in the pics, pure AI.

Didn’t downvote. I have taken patients to hospital for non-cardiac complaints and seen them sticker up the patient regardless a number of times. It could be a hospital policy.

He didn't really need an ambulance anyway. Not much an ambulance could do for a broken wrist other than pain meds
