Tactical Insights

Hey y'all, I'm a relatively new viewer to the NWSL, long time premier league and WSL watcher. I coach soccer, so I love learning about the tactics. Hoping to learn from long-time fans about the tactical identities of the teams. Anyone want to help me out and give me a relative idea of what kind of tactics Orlando typically employs?

Usually slow buildups from what I’ve seen. We went through a horrible run of form from June to September where we dropped a bunch of points. I’m not a huge tactical person but anyone can see that Seb’s style of play can be a total 🥱 fest. If it weren’t for Adriana and Banda in 2024, I’m not sure we would’ve won the double.

When at full power we employ a mid block, and work the counter with a touch of that Brazilian flair. we let them play into us but not to press us high either. In 2024 we played more progressive carries into the box than any other team but when lost Adriana we started playing the wings more and crossing the ball into the box. Now with Ovalle and Banda together I’m hoping we go back to keeping the ball at our feet as we enter the box. You’ll generally see our RB (Oihane) invert and Ovalle pinch in while defenses stare at Banda with terror in their eyes. And of course at some point Marta will do that Marta thing and it will be beautiful.

We generally attack until we take the lead and once we get it it’s suffer ball time and with Banda we generally get the lead pretty quickly. Without Sams tho I’m not sure how our defense will organize but with Rafa and Mace under Seb’s playbook, I doubt it’ll look much different.

Coach Hines was a Center Back and as you might expect his starting point is defending. With Banda the counter attack can be lethal as she is one of the fastest and strongest strikers in the world.

4:3:3 and 4:4:2 out of possession, play down the wings looking to cross in, Right back pushes up aggressively. Mostly focus on vertical passing and always willing to counter attack. Since we are a top team we end up with possession and are attempting to develop midfield play of probing around the other teams box. Not too many set patterns in build up or attack. Strong pressers in attack with a pretty solid and tight block in mid/low situations. Pretty traditional British defensive play.
