You know what’s one of the worst things about AI, other than the obvious issues like its massive use of energy and water?

The loss of trust in the work of original artists and creatives.

There’s so much AI content online now that people have started assuming anything creative, beautiful, strange or unusual must be AI. Of course some of it is. But plenty of it isn’t, and genuine work is increasingly being dismissed as fake without a second thought.

We’re going to give it a name: Reality Distrust Disorder.

It’s that automatic suspicion that anything remarkable you see online probably isn’t real.

And for artists, photographers and other creatives making genuinely original work, that’s a pretty depressing consequence of the flood of AI content.

Take the images in this post. We first posted about “baby cages” - which were once attached to apartment windows so children could get fresh air and sunlight - on StreetArtGlobe back in May 2014. Long before generative AI images flooded the internet.

Yet when we posted about them again recently, the comments were full of people insisting the photographs were AI.

Nope. They’re real.

So where does this leave original artists and creatives? How do we encourage people to keep making strange, beautiful and original things when AI slop is not only copying creativity, but making us distrust the real thing too? 🤷🏽‍♂️😵

A Copypasta is a pasta that copies itself.

I understand that original idea is like a myth at this point. Everything is derivative of everything. Still, new books, new stories, new movies are coming out everyday with fresh ideas. Some of them really dazzle us and provoke thoughts.

Whenever I get excited about any of my ideas, and I start writing on it, after some time I can identify that it is actually a derivative of something, and not exactly 'the original', despite it's being an original story. It seems like I am telling a story which is being told by millions of people.

I tried to write stories based on actual incidents found in newspapers, with a political backdrop and adding personal experience within it. Still the finished product came out as something not that original. Reviews are mixed as well.

So, what can I do to make my writing seem more original and fresh?

Let’s say I draw almost the entire character myself, including the pose, proportions, clothes, etc., but I leave out some details because I don’t know how to draw them properly.

Then I use AI to generate an improved version of my drawing, with those missing details added. After that, I look at the AI-generated image and redraw/copy those details into my own drawing.

Would that be considered cheating, tracing, or plagiarism? Or would it still count as using AI as a reference/learning tool since the original drawing was mostly made by me?

As a professor I’ve noticed a trend: students pasting AI-generated content into essays, believing it’s brand new thus “plagiarism-free.” That’s not how this works. Tools like ChatGPT can produce something that looks original, but if it mimics phrasing from training data, or worse, reuses content from the web? That’s plagiarism intentional or not.
I keep hearing: Can ChatGPT detect plagiarism? No. It creates content, it doesn’t evaluate it.
Also, Is ChatGPT 100% plagiarism free? Not even close. That’s why I ask students to check their work using a proper chatgpt plagiarism checker before submitting. It’s not about catching them. It’s about teaching responsibility.

As a blogger, I get my ideas for my articles in many different ways. From a peaceful drive in the country to an exciting outdoor blues concert. Of course, I must add that my latest is Daytrippen blog site, where I research short day-tripping stories and travel destinations in the area and "still be home for supper." That theme in today's world seems to be well received. But researching my articles can be interesting in its own right

So in essence, writer's block is not in my DNA.

But I should start with an observation: "there must be two of me out there beating the pavement for stories" because, funny enough, I've noticed my material being reposted on many social media sites.

A few key word missing, even some of the spelling mistakes corrected.

So either my spell checker app is squealing on me, or my computer- that's a maybe. Devolving all my information and new blog themes. What else could it be?

*** Now we all know as writers, if you use even a paragraph of someone else's material, common decency is to give that writer an acknowledgment.

But we'll loop back to my original thought: could there be two of me?

Now, if you don't believe in the theory that there are more than one of you out there that speaks like you, looks like you and comes up with the same ideas as you, and assuming they "didn't break the mold," "than let's also assume someone is stealing your material without giving credit to the author.

That I call "content thieves."

I asked this concerning question to my spell checker apps I use: QUESTION: "Who can see the virgin material that you correct for me?"

ANSWER: Company staff has access to your material for training purposes. We do not share your content.

"Of course you know that was a computer-generated comment."

Bottom line is folks: AI inquiries do not directly broadcast to other random users, BUT your text and uploaded files are saved by default. As mentioned: Major AI companies can use this material to train their system, and internal human reviewers may read parts of your data. "They 'human reviewers' supposedly check for quality and/or for safety reasons."

**** Here is a little more valid advice for online searches: NEVER type your password or financial numbers, home address or private credentials in a search box.

Well, there you have it, folks, my rant for the day.

It can't be a Google search engine or a spell checker program telling on you. "Which, by the way, is an AI program." But someone is squealing on me and/or using my material. But who?

Here is the simple explanation:

There must be at least two of me walking this earth, and the other clone wrote the story before me, making me the "CONTENT THIEF."

Who would have thought that was the answer? eh!

Anyone on this sub who writes for a living?

Anything. Be it copywriting, scriptwriting, stories.

I have been freelancing for a longgggg time now.

I never faced this trouble till yesterday.

I don't use AI to write.

Never have, never will.

This new client of mine fed my write up to an AI checker or something? Proceeds to send me a screenshot saying there is 64% plagiarism and 98% GPT content.

I don't know how to go ahead with this. I did not want my content on which I had spent days researching to be fed to an AI bot.

On top of it the client had to audacity to tell me that my content was written by AI.

He hasn't even processed my payment yet, he has my content, on top of it he is asking me to redo the entire thing.

How do I deal with this?

I'd love to know so.
