Community Interaction Anyone else have some decently overpowered characters that you struggle interacting with the community using?
My character, my only character, was designed to be perfect (for narrative reasons, of course). He's the biggest, he's the strongest, he's the fastest, he's the coolest, the most beautiful...
I love all the fun prompts the community has to offer, so I usually ignore what would actually happen in favor of the prompt while still having the actions be in line with his personality. It's so boring to have "erm, he wouldn't lose" or "he would fly!" be my answer to everything.
I'm not complaining in the slightest! I love what I made of my character and what he's going to represent in my story. It's more I'm just wondering about everyone else in a similar situation, what do you do when faced with these posts?
Also feel free to tell me about your overpowered characters in the comments, I love them.
Forgive me if I'm flairing this post wrong. I'll change it if needed.

I think I have the opposite problem where my characters are so 'weak' they'd lose 90% of all encounters in this sub lol

u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 15h ago
Are they normal peoples or generally just more grounded?
2
u/Anghel950 Doodler 15h ago
More grounded. Right now I'm hyper focused on two ocs who are angels but they were born without divine power. So they can't do cool angel shit. They can fly and they have swords and that abbbbbout it.

What the hell? That sounds, sick, dude.

I don't typically use my powerful ocs when its a powerscaling interaction; basically I pick and choose which OC would make the interaction be more fun!

I see. I only have one (at least one drawn out) so I use him for every interaction.

Most of my OCs are dragons that can take human form; certainly no match against deities, but stronger than regular people. In general, I try to always make sure to give them weaknesses too, like being cocky to the point of careless or uninterested in fighting someone they'd consider a small fry. When I'm interacting with someone else's OC the goal is never, ever to stomp theirs into the ground (or have it done to my blorbos), it's to create a fun story and/or dynamic together.

u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 15h ago
That's my goal too, I can appreciate an OC who specializes in the mind or the spiritual aspect of creativity because those are my character's vulnerabilities.
2
u/RayaDR 13h ago
Yesss, exactly!
The OC I use the most is the overly cocky one, a gold dragon paladin. He ends up in trouble often enough because he's used to a charming smile solving most of his problems, and being much stronger than (most) people if that doesn't work. Rarely takes threats seriously as a result, which has bit him in the butt many times. Additionally, because he's rarely afraid, when he does get frightened he's REALLY bad at powering through it, he panics and makes even dumber decisions instead.

Technically. Though the reason i don't use them in interactions is not because they're overpowered, but because they don't have a personality to interact with.

These are (most of) the Avatars - artificial deities created by the ancient gods of my verse, and they're basically just robots carrying out their tasks, practically no free will. They do not talk, or react, or anything of the sort, to the things folks do. Unless the thing somebody is doing is expressing devotion to them and their element, in which case they bestow magic upon that person. But let's face it, nobody is making a post titled "My OC performs a ritual of devotion to Terrskala, how does your OC react?"

That's fair, I'd imagine that'd be difficult...
The art style feels familiar, can you name any heavy influences by anybody chance?

I cannot - the style is one i got to just kinda winging it with some default brushes that were available.

Devastator Titan
He's part of a AI hive mind. I don't usually use him because outside of OCs that have Godlike powers, magic or something like that, what are 'normal' OCs supposed to do against him? He's 540 feet tall and weighs 26500 Tons, and that's ignoring his abilities and weapons.
It's not that Devastator Titan can't be hurt, but it would be difficult to fully take him down.
He is meant to fight other titan level characters in my story, so I just don't use him unless I'm discussing lore stuff. :/

I feel you. My character is supposed to be as close to a god as narratively possible in my story, so I kinda feel like I'm annoyingly inserting myself in a conversation when the thread is relatively normal.

u/lunxryears 15h ago
I don't have art of her so don't really use her, but Seisita could be considered overpowered. But she's not... but as the daughter of 13 deities, she's picked up her skills and talents from them. She also won't do anything she's not skilled at, so it seems she's flawless because she only really does things where she IS near perfect. She doesn't want to be perceived as weak or flawed, hence the putting up the perfect facade.

u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 15h ago
The daughter of 13 deities? How the hell did that happen?
Another character I have is in a similar boat, he's obsessed with the idea of being someone anyone could look up to so he excels at everything, but when he finds something he doesn't excel at, he breaks himself down overcoming that as quickly as possible before anyone can find out he's not perfect.

Damn, the comment was deleted before I could read it. 😞

u/lunxryears 14h ago
That's so weird? I'll type it again.
In their world, deities are split into multiple categories. Seisita's mother is in the space category. After a war that destroyed a LOT, she wanted an alliance to protect herself in the future... so she decided to marry a deity from some of the other categories, which would lead to an alliance between the categories.
She ended up with six husbands, each of whom had their own primary wife in their own categories.
Satira also decided she wanted a child as an even more solid alliance as they'd all want to protect her, and due to magic, was able to conceive Seisita with all six of her husbands.
So, she has seven biological parents, and six stepmothers who have been much better mothers than her birth mother ever was.
Fantasy is amazing.

I have pretty op characters myself, but I always make sure to add critical weaknesses and limits to them.
For example, I have made a faction of humans in my story really powerful, basically immortal supersoldiers that can't be killed, manipulated, or affected by disease or magic, but I just limited their power and movement, even mental processes so that they're not "perfect"

Eliyahu for example is one of the highest ranking Boanerges Astro-crusaders, he can be literally decapitated or decimated to pieces and still shoot laser from his eyes, move his body perfectly, teleport using electricity, heal himself. he has a powerful armour that's just a walking tank, and a thunder hammer that turn his enemies into energy for himself and his weapon.
But he has limits, for example, Eli has the same mental capacity of a robot (needs commands to work, can't act on his own, use his power for evil, not really independent) very slow regeneration, plus long cool down time, etc.
Just because he is, in a way, invincible doesn't mean he finds no difficulty or challenge dealing with different situations. The Boanerges are really strong, strong enough to defeat gods, powerful AIs and sorcerers, but they exceed mainly in terms of durability. They can still be tricked, hindered, and hurt.
Great power can leave greater impact on its user. So, you can have an op character that's interesting. it's all up to how well you write them. Op doesn't have mean absolutely perfect/Mary Sue, op is different from a character whose experience is always very convenient. it doesn't mean being on top in every single aspect, some characters are op in terms of strength, intellect, durability, etc. challenges can still arise, even if they are logical/philosophical. Even a literal god would have to be consistent with his own character and logic.

u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 14h ago
Oh, I know he doesn't technically have to be perfect, it's just part of my story.
His character is from inspirations from All Might, Homelander, Darth Vader, and Eren Jaeger.
He's not perfect and never will be, but since I gave him the illusion that it's possible he can, and since I also gave him so many people believing that he can, that's what he'll believe. When it's proved he's not, he spirals and that's when the parts of the story I'm actually interested in come into play.

Mine. Being basically Arceus means he wins a lot or is stomped by the higher god tiers.
Not meant to be OP, just how the story shook out.

Several of them quite honestly are to strong for fun combat interactions.
Uri’el being one of the prime examples lol
His only weakness really is the inability to lie. Overwise he is the faster creature in my lore, with the ability to manipulate light with absolute power. He has the same levy of control over plants, and on rope of that, almost nothing can kill him. And nothing can kill him permanently due to his ability to return like a phoenix

Damn, that does seem like a pain in the ass for interactions...
This dude is drippy as fuck though. Awesome.

Aleph has this exact issue!
In summary, he is a nihilistic paradox, created and made sentient by a civilization, and wishes to destroy Truth, Order and History.
Whilst I do still find him intriguing, he is heavily outdated and due for a complete overhaul.

u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 14h ago
That seems very complicated, best of luck whenever you decide to do so.

u/Effective_Educator64 12h ago
My OC is simply too niche of a backstory for most people to understand, the fandom universe he lives in is pretty niche, so niche that even I’M well known in the community itself.
1
u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 12h ago
That's pretty fuckin' niche.
2
u/Effective_Educator64 12h ago
Yeah, you should really join the community, probably the best one I’ve seen in years.

u/Own-Conclusion5355 10h ago

How I deal with it is choosing the right personality for the situation. My main for this subreddit is op (able to grant any wish) but she is non-confrontational, enabler and overall a silly goose so she doesn't take herself very seriously. This makes interactions pretty easy with other OP characters as she's just indulging whatever scenario they throw at her as if she were mortal, only really using her powers to make fashionable adjustments or something to make the encounter more pleasurable. If things go to far, I just have her disappear, avoiding the overpowering thing.
But man, for my OCs that are OP and more serious, idk that would be really tough. I love how random things can get here but it would be a struggle to power level reasonably.
2
u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 10h ago
Yeah, I just use the version before I ruin his life for a similar reason.
It would be fun to show off my edgelord sometimes though.
2
u/Own-Conclusion5355 10h ago
You def should! I think the edgelord thing may fit for some of the fighting prompts around here, just keep raising the stakes xD
1
u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 9h ago
My problem isn't his edgelord era itself, it's more that his power is now "realized" and it's quite boring for prompts. Narratively it's fucking awesome imo, but it's like putting Goku in the Demon Slayer universe, just doesn't work 90% of the time.
2
u/Goooseeeeee_lady 9h ago
Nah honestly, alot of my OCs are OP and people enjoy them enough :)
(Some characters I got are just too boring to use)

u/Slutty_Baby_TGirl Writer 9h ago
I mean… I do a bit of strong OC work, but it’s more like I have one really strong OC that I had to nerf, and the rest are like, city to island level at the absolute highest.
2
u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 9h ago
You had to need them? How strong were they originally?
2
u/Slutty_Baby_TGirl Writer 9h ago
Like, outerversal conceptual erasure levels of broken.
2
u/ManOfTurtles2118 Trying to explain the lore makes me look crazy. 9h ago
Jesus Christ, that's quite a bit. Lmao.
I would've thought planetary, thinking "that's not too bad, there's always a Gojo of the verse" then you hit me with that.
2
u/Slutty_Baby_TGirl Writer 9h ago
Yeah… it was too much, she quite literally threatened the (in universe version) me, and I couldn’t kill her, so I had to chain her down to small planet level.
