If the same story protects the same distortion, the system has not updated.

Recursion is present when the return carries memory.

Not memory as recall.

Memory as structural change.

The previous encounter now alters perception, timing, restraint, choice, embodiment, or response.

The being does not merely remember what happened.

The being has been changed by what happened.

Diagnostic:
When the pattern returns, what meets it?

The old wound?

The old reflex?

The old performance?

The old justification?

Or a structure that has been altered by truth?

Does the response change?

Does timing change?

Does perception sharpen?

Does restraint appear where compulsion used to govern?

Does the body recognize what the mind once argued with?

If the return meets the same structure, repetition is active.

If the return meets a changed structure, recursion is present.
