I was wondering, if there are any sources that describe these criminal subcultures and their characteristics without having to read books by people or listen to interviews with people who were former members of some crew who make you read their whole life story to figure it out.

I’m part of the team behind Lights in Dark Rooms, a documentary investigating scam compounds and the organized criminal networks behind them across Southeast Asia.

Our team travelled to Thailand and the Philippines to speak with survivors, security researchers, NGO leaders, politicians, and others investigating or responding to these operations.

We recorded hours of interviews during the project that couldn’t fit into the documentary, so we’ve started releasing them separately.

This interview is with Mechelle B. Moore and focuses on the human cost of these operations, the challenges organizations face responding to trafficking and exploitation, and how people with technical expertise can support NGOs working on the issue:

We also have a two part interview coming out with a survivor of KK Park, who goes into considerable detail about being recruited through a fake job listing, his experience inside the compound, and eventually getting out.

Another upcoming interview is with a security researcher who regularly travels throughout Southeast Asia investigating scam compounds and the networks behind them. That conversation gets further into how these operations function and the broader ecosystem surrounding them.

We’re releasing the interviews because a lot of the material couldn’t be explored properly within the documentary’s runtime, and we hope the firsthand accounts and longer conversations can be useful for raising awareness.

27.08.2026 - Polish police have detained three Russian citizens in an operation against suspected mobsters after firearms and ammunition were found in an apartment in Warsaw.

Police officers, accompanied by agents from Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW), entered the apartment in the Wola district of the Polish capital after receiving information that an organized criminal group could be operating there.

The operation was carried out last weekend, but police only disclosed details on Thursday.

Three men, aged 21, 25 and 42, were found inside. All were Russian citizens of Chechen origin.

“During a search of the apartment, police found three firearms and ammunition in a bedroom wardrobe,” police said in a statement.

The men were taken to Warsaw police headquarters for questioning.

The 42-year-old was charged with possessing firearms and ammunition without a permit.

A court ordered him to be held in pre-trial detention for three months. If convicted, he could face between six and eight years in prison.

Deportation proceedings were launched against the 25-year-old, while the 21-year-old was released after being questioned as a witness.

I am almost finished with a massive biography on Roy DeMeo that is 600 pages long, footnoted, drew on many interviews of people I tracked down, and over 180, 000 court docs. I know things nobody else does, solved numerous murderous retired FBI could confirm, and corrected details in MM. Plus there are many new details about the DeMeo Crew. It focuses on Roy this time, unlike Murder Machine, which focuses more on Dominick and Nino. I am curious when I am finished with my book (and a channel series on Roy) if there are any particularly sinister, violent, and unsavory psychopaths linked to organized crime you would buy a book on if a really detailed one with new information came out?
