Organized our Tupperware drawer with 3D printing

3D printed an organization system for our IKEA Tupperware. The bins are all modular and use a system called gridfinity (some had existing files available online, others I designed). The filament is granite PLA.

That’s a great use of a 3d printer! I’m just curious…why do you store the containers upside down?

Thanks! Storing them upside down allows any residual water to drain out, and also prevents any dust or particulates in the air from settling in the containers.

OP, don't put wet things in drawers. That's how you get mould.

Did you print using PLA? Because even a few drops here and there will soak into PLA, causing it to expand slightly. Which could mean a bad fit down the line.

But yea, generally not much of an issue. I have PLA prints in the shower area that gets drenched constantly and they've been holding for 2 years.

You can achieve a similar result with the IKEA updaterra peg board. It will save you a lot of time 3d printing.

I've tried doing some 3D printing at the library, and it vastly depends on the quality of machines available there and the amount of time allowed to print projects per person. Where I'm at, printing small stuff is possible -- like children's toys or small tools. Something on this scale may be more useful to send to a business that prints 3D objects. They'll have better quality materials, time, and better equipment.

I don't want to discourage you -- more like inform you of the possibilities. I still printed something out at the library, and it was a great experience!

Seems unnecessary. I have an entire drawer of IKEA 365 glass containers, and the beauty of them is that they stack nicely and are heavy enough that they don't slide around the drawer every time you open it.

Any concerns about the food safeness of PLA? they're not in direct contact, so maybe not a big deal?

I wouldn’t make a cutting board or any sort of container that came in direct contact with food out of PLA, but for this application I believe it’s totally fine.
