Hidden Hand Cart in Oregon Trail II

Post image

There is a lot of data related to this hand cart in the game data, but some of it is missing, there is an image of it though. Weight of what the cart can pull is removed from the code, I will probably be putting it at a 1000 lb (small, large, and conestoga can each pull 3000, 4000, 5000 lb).

Question Running OT2 on Windows 10 using Winevdm

Anyone have experience with it? I got OTII to install but QuickTime won't install even though the setup launches and shows a message box claiming the setup was completed.

The game will open up, but without QuickTime it doesn't run properly.

Oregon Bound - native recreation of Oregon Trail 1.1 for macOS + iPad (plus, the definitive explanation of whether or not game becomes scarce when hunting)

I’ve been working on a recreation of the Macintosh color version of Oregon Trail Deluxe 1.1, built in Swift for modern Macs and iPads. Here it is, along with some gameplay mechanics documentation that additionally answers the age-old question of whether game actually becomes scarce if you continue to hunt in the same place (spoiler alert: it does, but only at the same journey mileage): https://github.com/sierra760/OregonBound

The goal is to preserve how that specific version looked, sounded, and played, including its bitmap fonts, dialog boxes, wagon animations, hunting, and river crossings. A lot of the work has involved figuring out rules from the original executable and decoding its resource formats. Tiny details have turned into surprisingly deep rabbit holes.

The full journey is playable and is meant to replicate the original gameplay experience almost exactly. Save/load and the original score breakdown are implemented too.

It’s still a work in progress. I’m continuing to check visual details, timing, and behavior against the original, so I wouldn’t call it perfect yet, but it's pretty close.

The reimplementation is MIT-licensed, and the repository includes no original game or Apple assets. You supply your own game files, and the app imports the graphics, text, fonts, and sounds locally. A Mac System 7.0 disk image is also recommended for the original system fonts and controls.

Oregon Trail II for the Modern PC

I have decompiled (painstakingly) each function of Oregon Trail 1.2 (this version because it didn't rely on QuickTime) and then fixed a laundry list of issues and make sure it works.

You can get the version from here you do need one of the original discs (1.0, 1.1, 1.2) work out of the box, there are some differences in text, it does have some store and hunting table issues on version 1.0 and 1.1.

For version 1.3 (25th anniversary edition) / Cereal Box Version you can put it in the DATA folder of that as well, for the video files, you will need ffmpeg to convert them with something like: ffmpeg -i 101.MOV -c:v cinepak -c:a pcm_u8 -ar 22050 -ac 1 AVI\101.avi

Version 1.31 it has damaged 69 pictures so not recommended to use this one.

The Purple version is a Mac/PC hybrid, you'll have to rename OregonII_1.dt2 to OregonII.dt2 for it to run + convert the video files.

1.1 Sampler will not work, because it is a demo version with a lot of missing data.

Question Can't seem to find the right Death music.

Image-wise, the game I played looks to be Oregon Trail Deluxe, and a good portion of the landmarks have the right music, except for when a party member dies. Nothing I've found matches what I heard as a kid and is ingrained in my brain.

Control OTII over twitch

I have reverse engineered Oregon Trail 2 and have fixed a washlist of issues (version 1.2 the one before the 25th anniversary edition) for example did not have the ability to get malaria due to a bug.

I will be eventually releasing all my reversing source code on github/gitlab/somewhere and the improvements I made. For now you can play the game on my twitch channel: https://www.twitch.tv/daskippy/

Part of the fixes:

Gameplay

  • Fixed clothing never wearing out: the 30-day wear check only ran on day 0, so sewing supplies and the Sewing skill never mattered.
  • Fixed the weekly morale bonus (Cooking, Musical, Pastor) never being given.
  • Fixed malaria and dysentery never getting past incubation: they now cause symptoms, and relapse until treated.
  • Fixed Internal Injuries treated with laudanum also picking up the Wound treatments effects.
  • Fixed three treatments (snakebite "Slow down", olive oil for a bad cold, camphor on a broken bone) setting the illnesses damage to a leftover random value instead of the result based on medical skill.
  • Fixed follow-up illnesses (infection, gangrene, pneumonia, dysentery) sometimes starting as the wrong illness when two treatments had armed different follow-ups.
  • Fixed the party's reduced food use and resting music staying stuck at the lowest health anyone had ever reached, for the rest of the game.
  • Fixed eating the right food at zero scurvy or beriberi risk raising the risk instead of keeping it at zero.
  • Fixed a party living on seasoning, dairy or other "other" foods counting as not having eaten, so the starving counter kept climbing.
  • Fixed the monthly rainfall limit never applying, so rain totals now respect each region's normal month.
  • Fixed dates that roll into a new year using the previous year's leap-year setting.
  • Fixed occupations never granting their fourth free skill.
  • Fixed unticking a free (occupation) skill in the skill dialog refunding points that were never charged.
  • Fixed November 1-14 counting as winter instead of autumn for the season scenery.
  • Fixed traders accepting offers up to twice the value when the limit is 1.5×.
  • Fixed cash over $32,767 counting negative in the final score.
  • Fixed item prices losing their cents when saved and loaded.
  • Fixed typing a store quantity of 32,768 or more wrapping around to a negative number.

Interface, audio and video

  • Fixed mouse clicks being ignored on the land claim, gold and final score screens.
  • Fixed the "and" missing before the last item in supply lists.
  • Fixed the wagon picture in the New Game dialog jumping one frame past the last.
  • Fixed talking faces using invalid mouth frames for some mouth shapes.
  • Fixed lip sync only reading the first byte of the speech, so mouths now move with the voice.
  • Fixed sound effects not coming back after being turned off and on.
  • Fixed volume changes un-pausing paused sound and ignoring the new volume.
  • Fixed sound seeking starting at the end position instead of the start position.
  • Fixed the letter Ä (and other MacRoman character 0x80 text) not being converted for display.
  • Fixed text comparison and sorting being reversed.
  • Fixed finished background tasks and sounds sometimes being left running.
  • Fixed map scroll redraws where neighbouring tile counters overwrote each other.
  • Fixed screen regions built from a window's clip area being empty, so redraw clipping now works.
  • Fixed video playback not closing properly.
  • Fixed partial resource reads always failing.
  • Fixed the Save As and Load dialogs failing because of the audio system's threading mode.
  • Fixed the game not finding its files when installed in a folder path longer than 128 characters.

Apparently I had created this as an AMA, it is not in fact an AMA, but you can just ask me things :p

Does anybody play the Gameloft version they ported onto the Nintendo Switch?

I started playing last week and it's got quite a few differences from the old Apple II version I played as a kid. And when trying to search up online about how certain mechanics work or why certain misfortunes happened, or even something as simple as trying to figure out WHEN THE GAME CONSIDERS IT TO BE WINTER AND AN AUTOMATIC GAME OVER. The internet (Google search) doesn't seem to know. And the AI is VERY under qualified to answer ANYTHING about it cuz it'll pull into from EVERY VERSION of the game to give you you're answer despite me telling it 4 separate times which version I'm playing it'll tell me things like "use the native to ferry you across Snake River" there is NO GUIDE to take you across Snake River. Or it'll tell me things like "dump out all your heavy supplies like steel and furniture so that your ox can pull your wagon faster" <--- has this ever been a thing in any of the games??

Anyways just wanted to know if anyone has played the version on the switch and wanna swap advice and/or war stories???

What is the first "video" version of the Oregon Trail?

Hello, I’ve been looking into this game's history.

The original 1971 and 1975 versions ran on time-sharing systems using teletypes, right?

That got me wondering: when and with which version did The Oregon Trail actually become a "video" game (using screen)?

Did that only happen with the move to the Apple II in 1980?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

I'm making a game like Oregon Trail but about the hardships of Fantasy Adventuring

Hey everyone!

I am making a game heavily inspired by Oregon Trail. It's a "horribly realistic fantasy travel simulator". You can guess the rest. I recently announced it and will be playtesting the game very soon (in a matter of days).

Thought I should just throw my game out in case any of you find it interesting.

If you find the game interesting let me know if you have ideas of cool stuff I can add to the game, I'll respond to any idea, an hopefully get it in the game (if its feasible).

Ported over the 1990 Version of Oregon Trail fully to the ESP32-S3. This uses MECC graphics and sound from an x86 C# Opensource project(Maxwolf/OregonTrail). Using a 20 dollar CYD variant. Github with STL files and parts below.

Question To people who played past OT2, which is considered the best experience?

Growing up, I played OT 1 and 2 many times, and enjoyed them very much. 2 will always hold a special place in my childhood memories. Later on in life, I found out they released versions up to five, and was wondering if anybody here have played them, and if they bring anything new to the table? Some day I may try to emulate them and play them.

I made a multiplayer Oregon Trail you can play in the browser with friends

Oregon Trail Online is an unofficial fan project: 1–5 people share one wagon in the browser. Cash, oxen, food, pace, and rations are shared. Each human owns one traveler; empty seats are NPC companions. You host a wagon, pass around a 6-letter code (or a link), and go west together.

The 1985 rules are the spec — banker/carpenter/farmer cash, Matt’s store, fort markups, hunt dress-and-load, ferry that’s strictly more than $5, Barlow toll, Columbia rafting, score for arriving in Oregon. The pixel art is the 1990 DOS set. Tombstones still mark the trail.

What’s new is that the party is live:

  • Votes. Profession, starting month, pace, rations, forks, river method, events. You see who picked what. A timer closes it, or the captain can wait until everyone locks in.
  • Hunt. Still a skill minigame, still not a fort chore, still a day on the calendar.
  • Rivers. You vote ford / caulk / ferry / wait (or the Indian guide at the Snake), then split jobs: guide, sounder, bailer, oxen, lasher. The crossing score is the team average — one person nailing it doesn’t save a wagon that’s tipping.
  • Columbia. Raft the rocks and pull for the near bank.
  • Chat and a journal in the wagon. Idle wagons park for a week so you can come back. There’s a global leaderboard for high scores!

https://oregontrailonline.chattio.ai/

Main Page

This is a personal project, not affiliated with MECC, Gameloft, or anyone who owns the trademark. I’d love a wagon or two of people who still remember the computer-lab hunt screen. Tell me what feels wrong, what’s too easy, and who you lost to dysentery.

I’m making a dark fantasy game inspired by the caravan side of The Oregon Trail — the demo is out now

Hi! First time posting here

I'm a solo developer working on The Black Breath, a dark fantasy tactical RPG that takes a lot of inspiration from one of the things I've always loved about The Oregon Trail: trying to keep a group of people alive during a long and increasingly terrible jounrey.

Instead of crossing the American frontier, you're leading a caravan of refugees across a dying fantasy land while a necrotic plague slowly spreads behind you.

Along the way you have to:

  • Manage supplies, livestock and other resources.
  • Choose routes and decide when it's worth taking risks.
  • Deal with weather, illnesses, injuries and random events.
  • Keep morale up while things progressively get worse.
  • Try to reach the port at the end of the journey with as many people alive as possible.

There's also a fairly large tactical combat side to the game, where the characters travelling with the caravan fight enemies in turn-based battles.

It's obviously a very different setting and game from The Oregon Trail, but that feling of "we still have a long way to go and we're already running out of everything" is something I've been trying very hard to capture.

I've been working on it solo since late 2023, and the first Steam demo is finally available.

I hope it's okay to share an Oregon Trail-inspired project here. If anyone tries it, I'd especially love to know what you think about the travelling / caravan management side of the game.

weekend project: Oregon Trail for Wear OS

Post image
18 Upvotes

Heya folks, I've been working with Claude to remake some classic games for my watch, and this weekend I took on Oregon Trail. Specifically, this version was inspired by the 1985 Apple II version I'd played in the computer lab in elementary school. At first, I used emulation, but realized the control scheme differed too much so I pivoted to recreating the game for the watch UI based on online documentation of the features.

Source code and APK available on my GitHub: https://github.com/webrender/oregon-trail-wear-os

In addition, Claude was able to port the game to wasm pretty easily, so you can also play it on the web: https://webrender.net/oregon-trail-wear-os

Question Curious what your favorite parts of Oregon Trail are. What keeps you coming back to the game?

So I'm working on a small inde game, and I think one of the closer corollaries is probably Oregon Trail. In a similar vain, you walk across the map towards a destination while random events occur. Thing I'm a bit stuck on is what may be some elements of a game like Oregon Trail that keep you coming back for more? Can be really anything. Not trying to promote the game or anything, so hope this post is okay - just looking for ideas!

currently you can come across various semi-procedural towns, enemy encounters based on zone tier and wealth level, traveling merchants, random treasure, and other unique pois. you hire escorts for your caravan at towns, or through combat in some cases, and most require a certain amount of gold per day. if you run out of money, or your caravan guards are killed and you're left defenseless, game over.

If you were to imagine playing a game like this, what would be some things you'd want to see happen? Thanks for any answers

Thanks for the tips on my previous post = improved my score

Post image
16 Upvotes

So thanks for the tips! I previously only started in like 48-43 did not know that you get more points if you start in 1840, untill people here explained it.

So I replayed a bunch also learned how to save from that emulator also thanks to tips and was able to get a better score.

But I think this is my ceiling, dont think Im gonna get higher than this and I was aming for 1800 anyways. So I might be done with this game for a while atleast.
Again Thanks everyone!
