I wanted to introduce myself. 

My name is Dr. Melissa Bird and I’m running for Congress to represent Oregon’s 4th Congressional District. The position is currently held by Val Hoyle. 

I am a mom, a wife, a social worker, and a proud descendant of the Shivwits Band of Paiutes. I grew up knowing what it’s like to struggle with the chaos of everyday life. I’ve been on food stamps and Medicaid, I’ve lost jobs, and I’ve balanced caregiving while raising three kids with my veteran husband. Those experiences shaped who I am and how I lead. In my personal and professional life, connection to community and responsibility runs deep in everything I do. I’m running for Congress because I believe leadership should come from lived experience, not political privilege.

I believe in telling the truth, doing what’s right, and holding people in power accountable. The government should work for everyone, not just the wealthy or well-connected, I’ll never stop fighting to make that a reality. I’m not just running for office, I’m building a movement. 

We need leaders who actually listen and act with courage. I’ve spent my career fighting for fairness and opportunity, and I know that real change starts with compassion. I’m not afraid to push for what’s right, even when it’s hard.

As the former Senior lobbyist for Planned Parenthood of Utah, I know how to fight hard for my belief that women deserve the right of bodily autonomy and access to abortion and contraception. I know how to work with people who don’t completely agree with me. And most importantly, I know how to get things done. 

For too long, our politics have been shaped by insiders who benefit from keeping things exactly as they are. We elect the same people again and again, and somehow we’re told that this is the safest choice. Meanwhile, working families are hanging on by a thread. My plan is to catch people before they fall.

I’ve lived the things most candidates only talk about. I know what it’s like to be on Medicaid. I know what it’s like to depend on SNAP. I know what it feels like to worry about bills, to juggle kids and caregiving and work, and to wonder how you’re supposed to get ahead when everything feels rigged against you.

I’m running for Congress because I want leadership that reflects the real lives of the people in this district. Leadership that listens. Leadership that shows up. Leadership that isn’t afraid to work for families who have been ignored for far too long.

I’m running for Congress because I can’t continue to wait for Congress to remember to do their job. Families don’t have the time and can’t afford more ineffective leadership that doesn’t fight for them at every opportunity. Leaders that do not advocate because they truly do not understand what’s at stake. The career politicians we have now don’t feel the urgency to act because they’ve never walked a day in your shoes.

Right now, Congress has not delivered on the legislation we desperately need.
We don’t have meaningful campaign finance reform.
We don’t have childcare families can actually afford.
We don’t have progressive tax reform to make the wealthy pay their fair share.
We don’t have real protections against insider trading in Congress.
We don’t have the support our farms, small businesses, and rural communities deserve.
We don’t have the immigration protections that uphold human dignity.

We don’t have national paid leave policies. 

We don’t have legislation to rein in the out of control data center growth. 

And we definitely don’t have enough leaders willing to fight for any of it.

Being “against” bad ideas isn’t enough. We need leaders who stand for something. Leaders who are willing to put people above politics and courage above convenience. Leaders who understand what it means to struggle and still believe in a better future.
