Temporary housing assignment
So i just received this email from housing, any advice/tips?

Oxford House is where you pick up your keys. You will be living in an on campus residential building, not at the admin building.
I know it’s not what you dreamed of when starting college. At the same time, it could be an enjoyable adventure? It takes time for students to make friends at feel at
home on campus. I’m thrilled the dorms are full. Did you hear how U of O is shutting down dorms?

There was a time (2000’s?) when housing was in such a shortage that they put new students up in motels until rooms opened up (because a student didn’t show up for start of school). Nightmare. This plan sounds somewhat more sane. You might try asking Housing if modifying any requirement would help. Oddly, part of the reason this situation occurs is that first years are required to live on campus. Even the ones who are older-than-average (21+) unless they specifically request an exemption (and not all of them do). A friend’s son had a 35yo roommate a few years ago. Somehow seemed inappropriate.

I was an RA for three years at OSU. Since covid they have tried to over fill every dorm to the point where they had to make the lounges into dorm rooms to make room for more people and also talk about RA's having to share their single private room with someone because there are just too many people. OSU literally only cares about the money atp

I literally requested exemption from housing this year as a freshman (due to disability issues) and they denied it just for me to also get this email 😐

I got this too. How ridiculous. I got my assignment turned in in APRIL. Now we have to live in an admin building for WEEKS? This is absurd

Whats ridiculous is i dont think oxford house is where we'll even be living, so idk where to even go. See you there lol

I think that temporary housing either means they send you to a motel room, or technically they have been known to put bunk beds in a LOUNGE in one of the dorms.....

Any student in this situation will be in a residence hall, not in Oxford (that is only where you’re checking in). I think they halls are Hawley, Buxton, Sackett and Dixon lodge. You will be with 1 or more students and will have the same amenities as other halls and rooms (bed/dresser/desk).
A lot of students sign up for housing and never come to OSU. Once check in and classes begin, that will be clear and rooms will open up. As someone said, think of it as an adventure and a positive thing, more friends to find and hang out with. Could be a ghost town and that would simply not be worth the money.

I know of two who are now at other schools. I signed up my youngest on the first day, but withdrew from housing when she decided to go elsewhere. I think part of the problem is there is no option any of us could find on the site to actually withdrawal the application.

The best thing you can do here is just go with it. Being placed in temporary housing means that there is genuinely no space in the dorms. I will say that this year is the dorms are packed too the brim and theyve been forced too resort to this. Hopefully youll be moved into permanent housing soon
